My main concern with Killzone 2 was that initial videos made it seem more like "three word WW2" shooter type AI. You know the type, they get scripted to jump into a scene, stand and shoot, maybe make some vaguely intelligent gestures, and die as you mow them down.
In the latest hands on play article from Games Convention in Germany, the reporter there specifically noted the good AI. How the AI was very aggressive, but could be suppressed and suppress in return. They'd flank, take advantage of cover, and respond to any actions of others. For example he noted the AI would assault his position by using suppression fire, and how they'd wait for him to run out of ammo before moving around. This comes as a relief, although not so much a surprise considering how good the AI was in the Killzone Liberation PSP game (it was almost too good in that game, and that was a handheld game).
This makes me think of FEAR's AI, and how aggressive it could be, which is a good thing.
The devs basically confirmed co-op for the game too. The reporter asked them about co-op, although the devs couldn't actually say anything about it, the reporter remarked how the grins that the devs gave him pretty much answered that question. Frankly these days co-op tends to be a common, if not standard, feature of FPS games on consoles unless the game's direction says otherwise. The big question is whether it's 2 player, or 4 player co-op.
There was also a small blurb about how you'd be fighting alongside both carbon copy grunts and named characters from your unit. But that you'd always be fighting with your unit or friendlies. The firefights themselves could get pretty large, this makes me think they could have 4 player co-op accross 2 PS3s by having other players take control of those other characters in the Legionnaires. I'm kind of hoping each character will have a different specialty to give co-op a slight twist though.
The game is still a ways off, but I'm pretty excited for it.
