Hi, why are my ps3 download speeds so slow? I have a netgear router that goes for 54mbps. It took me over 7 hours to download the tony hawk demo and 6 hours for the stranglehold.

I'd like to know also.
How good of a signal do you need to get good download speed and game without lag?

Just because your router can do up to 54Mbps doesnt mean that that is your actual internet speed. Internet speed is determined by the service provider.
Speed varies for me when it comes to the PS3 download service, sometimes its slow as molasses, sometimes i get 8Mbps (im using a 20Mb/4Mb service)

My internet is only 1.5mbps/384kbps :bomb: My dad refuses to upgrade to the 3mbps plan, even though it is only $5 extra per month, and I offer to give him the $5. I wish I knew how fast my PS3 downloaded. The signal strength is anywhere between 85% and 55%. I was having problems with the PSN all the time, but after I did a quick format and put all the settings to default, everything seems to be fine.

When the new stuff came up this past week, the downloads were very speedy on wifi. My signal strength is 95-100% all the time at 3 mbps, but it's still very slow most of the time.
I've heard that Sony doesn't have any servers in North America, but I don't think that's true. Whatever the case, they need to increase their server capabilities.

I am pretty ignorant about these things, but I subscribe to comcast cable as well and pay for the most expensive high speed internet available, but my download speed is only 1/5 of yours, but the upload speed is higher. Does running over a wireless router slow things that much? Just curious.

I get the same speeds over here in germany as well. about 20mb down but only 1mb up.
But it depends on where the psn servers are located.
If i test my connection to orlando for example my speed drops dramatically to aboue 8mb down/400k up
And then of course its going to be how fast of speeds the psn servers can support.
And yes wireless will always be slower then wired.

well i had my old router which got 11mbps and it still downloaded faster, so im sure its not my router or connection, i remember getting heavenly sword in less then 15 mins, and GRAW2 in less then 30 mins, vs 7+ hours. this is ridiculous.

With cable internet you share the bandwidth with the people around you who also have cable, so the fewer people who have cable the faster your cable internet will be.

Keep in mind that you guys with high throughput that you're hitting servers that are reletively close and probably on the same SONET ring as your providers, hence you hit your ISP, hop on the SONET, then hop off at the Network Operations Center (NOC) where the server is located at. Not saying $20Mb isn't nice, but only if you're pulling from a path that can keep up with it.
If the Sony servers are on a pipe that is over 80% utilized, everyone is going to see considerable slowdown at those peak periods, which very well may be the issue. Hopefully they'll figure something out because my 1.93 update took about 45 minutes to download.
