DLP, CRT, front projector, LCD, plasma, whatever... no real price range, but you want to keep value in mind. Act as if you had ten grand but didn't wanna blow it all.
I currently have a DLP and love it, so I was considering just getting another. But at the same time, I like the idea of front projectors. I'm moving soon, so I could look for a house with a nice basement, foil up any windows and have a nice pitch black home theatre in there. For that, a front projector would be perfect. I'm also considering the flat panels, but large screens (50"+) tend to get pretty pricey. My current set is 56", so it wouldn't feel like much of an upgrade to go smaller.

This is pretty tough. I'm not very familiar with TVs bigger than fifty inches. Normally I recommend LCDs because they are perfect for people who are in the 32-47 inch range. And, the lack of glare, lack of burn in, ability to be used as a computer monitor easily, all cool stuff. But you seem pretty serious about using it as a home theater system, and I think the PQ of LCDs is still pretty mediocre. This coming from someone with an LCD.
A plasma in a dark room would look amazing. Burn in paranoia, though.
If you have the room for a CRT and only watch SDTV, that could actually be the best option.
Probably just stick with your current DLP, especially if you love it, and get some 47 inch LCD for your living room.
AVSForum.com will probably have some good options.

I had forgotten all about those LED DLPs... I remember reading about them a year ago, but that was before they came to market. Looks like 61" is the biggest Samsung makes in this line .
Here's a candidate: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HLT6187S-Slim-Engine-1080p/dp/B000N53TDM
The first thing that caught my eye is the 10,000:1 contrast ratio. That's four times my current Samsung DLP (HL-R5667W). Nice.
Anyone know of any cons to these LED DLPs?

I would probably do projector if your not really playin games on it. But if you can wait you could also do an OLED when they come out.

I'd definitely stay away from Plasma and Projecters that's for sure.
DLP or LCD seems like the trend.

picking up my 40xbr4 this weekend. tough choice between the samsung 71 and xbr4, but the sony was the obvious choice after noticing all the glare from the samsung and the sony just seemed to have darker blacks.

I just did some Googling and everything I can find points to OLED technology being used primarily for tiny screens (like on cell phones and mp3 players). Do they actually plan to make large TVs out of the stuff someday?

Anyone know of any cons to these LED DLPs?3 HDMI inputs (High Definition Multimedia Interface) with up to 1080i input support,
I guess that means it only goes up to 1080i via HDMI? Fail.
(Note: I'm not a genius when it comes to HDTV's, so I could be wrong).

AS long as it's a Samsung you'll never lose, they make the best most reliable TV's out there period.

"Now go do that Voo-doo that you do so well!!"But it still doesn't get 1080p over HDMI. Which is a fail in my book. I was seriously thinking of getting this TV until I saw that.

No its 1080p "Enjoy better pictures with the Samsung's HL-T6187S DLP HDTV. The piano black bezel is just 0.6-inch wide so the slim depth lets it fit where others won't. The energy-efficient 61-inch screen features a powerful, long-lasting LED light engine that turns on almost instantly. Full HD 1080p resolution and Samsung Cinema"
Were it says up to 1080i I think was a type-o but it is 1080p over HDMI

Yea they will in about 5 years, sony just showed off a 23" I believe at one of the electronics shows/ Problme is they have very short life span and cost a whole heck of a lot, I will see if I can find pics. Yep here you go look at the thinness and who doesn't want 1,000,000:1 contrast. now if someone could tell me whne they will be under $5000 I am buying

A front projector is obviously your only choice if you are wanting a 100-300" screen but there are a few down sides to front projectors.
The room really needs to be near complete darkness for optimal picture quality and the average life of the bulbs that power a front projector will need to replaced every 2-3 years, depending on use. These bulbs run anywhere from $100-$500 depending on what bulb your projector requires.
If you are looking at building a true home theater then a front projector should definately be at the top of your list but if you are just looking for a new set that you will be using for everyday viewing then you would probably be better off staying with and LCD or DLP set.
Personally, I really like the Sony XR4 LCD as well as the new Samsung Plasmas with 15000 contrast, don't remember the model numbers off hand.

I have a Sony 70" SXRD XBR2. Picture quality is amazing, everybody that sees it is blown away. Popular over at the AVSforum as well. New model should be out soon.

Id go for a RPTV... the Sony mentioned above is very nice, I picked my tv since it was similarly rated (certain places rated sony better some my jvc was rated better) to the sony... love it, 1080p and all, with newer models coming out you'd be able to get a steal on a good rear projection set
Front projectors, I cant stand becasue I like to have the lights on while watching tv most of the time

ya the only screen that has been demoed that could actually be used for tv is the 23", but sony does plan on making larger screens in the future. They'll probably be under 5K in 10 years.
