"Big shocker at today's Electronic Arts pre Tokyo Game Show press event. While playing a demo of Burnout Paradise, we felt something that we never thought we'd feel from a PS3 controller -- shake!"

I was hoping for a remapping/swapping of the D-pad and analog stick and maybe a bit fatter controller design. At least we'll be getting rumble now.

I wonder if they would be able to patch games like Resistance and Warhawk to support rumble or if we're SOL for the older games.

My guess is that we're SOL, because that would be a rewrite of the games from beginning to end. I doubt any developer would do that for older titles.
I'm curious where the cut-off would be between games that do have it and don't have it, besides Burnout Paradise.

I remember reading that some devs went ahead and left rumble code in their games.
Perhaps something could unlock it?

Perhaps something could unlock it?If they left it in the game code, then an online update would possibly unlock it.
If it's not in the game code already, then it's not likely to be added.

It's not hopeless. With the way games are written these days, unless they screwed up in the code design, it shouldn't be too hard to create a new rumble library and have the various effects code call it whenever needed. That's for basic rumble. If they wanted to add it for more subtle effects through the game they might have to time each one individually and that'll be a problem.
But for stuff like thrown grenades going off nearby causing rumble shouldn't be too difficult.
Still, it does mean extra man hours, and may not have enough incentive anyway.
I was really hoping they'd use that touchsense tech since it seemed interesting.

I'm sure the 2.0 PS3 update will include the OS functions for the rumble controller, which we suspected as rumor.
What the designers do after that is up to them. I'm sure they've known about it for months, as we can see with EA and Burnout Paradise.

Perhaps it could happen w/ Dual Shock 2's hooked up via a USB cable...but the current Sixaxis controllers are missing the actual hardware. But yeah, may have a good reason to use my USB adapter w/ a DS2 if this is the case.

And DS2's already have rumble for PSX and PS2 games. That came in a previous firmware.
my guess would be all PS3 games will incorporate rumble via some update. i would like to play Resistance with friggin rumble.

nice, when I played the dirt demo n ps3. I knew something was missing.
Do guys think Sony will exchange controllers? Like send us the rumble controllers for the sixaxis we got when we bought our ps3?

I don't think so no. Might see some trade-in deals at Gamestop though.
Anyone else remember, back in the day they were talking about Motorstorm... And how the mud tracks you made while racing would stay in place during a race, and over time harden?
So after you did a few laps the controller would rumble differently every time you went by certain places because the ground was phsyically being changed by the drivers. I thought that was a great idea but it got scraped in all that legal mess.
Maybe now in future titles we can see this kind of stuff happening via the PS3/new controller.

Sadly, they likely won't be making any other alterations.

Someone on the Gamespot podcast said that Motorstorm supported rumble via a racing wheel, so I'm guessing it's already been in some games.

I've been waiting on this. I hope that the old 6axis controllers go down in price.. might be good to pick up some cheap, and then buy at least two rumbles.

But now you not only have to wait, but are now forced to if you want to feel the rumble. My 360 came with rumble right in the box!
We will need to make sure to add that in when the eventual daily "if you add up all the things the 360 needs to be like the PS3 its like $800!". But now we can add an additional $50 for a PS3 controller. Sure, its not required like the HD DVD player, but hey, might as well add it in, right?

Why exactly do you have a ps3 if you hate it? You do know your 360 will die one day don't you? ;) I would know my first 360 got the 3 red light's. I lost all my respect for the 360 after reading about all that...

It's nice of Sony to make such a fuss over "a last gen feature." The beer is warm, but I guess better late than never to the party.

Actually, besides trying to pass it off early on when they couldn't put it in. They pretty quietly added it back in. Remember, only the news sites are making a big deal out of this, all Sony did was show a slide and said that rumble was going into the dual shock 3.
I still think Sony should just wait a while longer, license immersion's touchsense technology, and come out with a new controller design that goes beyond just adding motion sensors to the dual shock 2. I know others wouldn't, but I'd really be willing to pay a small extra for the already expensive controler if they included the touchsense tech.
It'd certainly give them a small leg up over the 360 and the wii, and the gameplay uses for a more advanced rumble are numerous.

Yeah, no one is talking about how the rumble is location specific.
Should make for interesting uses I hope.

They'll probably release the DS3 and then a year later, release a revamped DS3 with that new technology. Sounds like a plan to me.

According to most articles, spring of 2008 in the US and Europe and November 2007 for Japan. I just wonder if they will be coming out with a new unit packed with the controller at the same time of release or will it be later down the road.

Unfortunately, Sony themselves have said that the Dual Shock 3's rumble is the same system as the dual shock 2. So essentially, the dualshock 3 is a dualshock 2 with motion controls added.
That's why I was saying I wanted to them wait a bit longer and release an entirely new controller with the location based rumble technology to help differentiate the PS3 even more from competitors.

Okay, I stand corrected. Thanks Dallow!
Whoops, I was giving out the wrong info, but to save some face, I was going off that poorly researched article from gamedaily.
However, it's still not exactly clear so what's in it. Once again this is Sony PR flubbing what could be a very nice news release.
From what I gather, no one really knows what's inside the dual shock 3, whether it's multiple motors or just two like the dualshock 2. Reports seem to indicate just two motors right now, as most TGS reports only mention rumbling coming from the left or right, no front and back rumbles.
However, the devs are clearly stating that the implementation of the rumble is a lot better this time around. Lots more control over rumble intensity. And those same TGS reports say how the rumble felt quite nice coming from the controller. So the signs are pointing to a similar Dualshock 2 setup of 2 motors, but much better implementation, probably better motors with more software control in the controller.
There was only one statement that made it sound like fully localized rumble, but it was only by omission of specifics.
Do you know of any quotes that specifically mention rumbles from the front and back of the controller?
I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Actually, I'd trust the developers working on the devkits more than a Sony communications staff. Remember, Sony PR still has lots of problems, and the communications people are still fed the same lines to say from the tech departments.
Despite that gamedaily post, developers on NeoGAF have said otherwise. Although note that I couldn't find the exact post disputing it, but it was disconfirmed by the NeoGAF people, they tend to be pretty accurate.
However, there was on confirmation of the touchsense tech, but the rumble isn't exactly the same as the dualshock 2.
