View Full Version : Damn good quality 1080p

I just burned a compressed 1080p (H264 codec, .MP4) onto a DVD (yes, a DVD. It was only 3.8 or something GB), and started watching it.

Amazing quality. Good thing PS3 accepts compressed video :) 1080p goodness in smaller sizes than 50GB. 8-)

I've been burning certain HD DVD only movies in 720p onto standard 4.7GB DVDs and playing them via my PS3. I must say, it's great to be able to own BD movies like Pirates and Casino Royale, while also being able to enjoy HD DVD exclusive movies in HD :) I don't have a 1080P HDTV, but 720p from the best of both worlds is better than nothing.

too bad they can't play divx, mkv or ogm. Can I switch the h264 mkv to mp4 will that work?

hmmm, this information intrigues me, I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. Also if anyone would be kind enough to PM me how this is done I would be grateful since this thread could be deleted.

I downloaded a torrent called "300 H264 MP4 PS3 Xbox 360." It was done for me.

I have attempted to convert other 1080p movies myself, using PS3 Converter, but is CRAP, like all commercial Mp4 converters. Didn't even recognize H264.

How do you go about getting it onto a disc?

I did this conversion for Howard the Duck 720p.

EXCELLENT!

What program for a good transfer of .mkv to .mp4?

What program for a good transfer of .mkv to .mp4?It's very difficult to do anything with mkv.

I just converted it straight to a DVD format (vob) with FAVC.

My comp is slow, and two passes took 14 hours to convert....

Does this actually look significantly better than DVD when compressed down to ~ 4 gigs?

Does this actually look significantly better than DVD when compressed down to ~ 4 gigs?It looks cleaner if the source is crystal clear.

These are the same codecs Sony and MS use for their HD videos on their network stores.

There's more artifacting, and color banding than an actual 1080p source of course.

I'm going to do this with certain HD-DVD movies that come out later.. like Transformers.

PS3 + Linux + VLC Player + .mkv's= high def bliss

I'm thinking about leaving my PS3 on linux at least until Ratchet and Uncharted. I mean internet, .mkv movies, and emulators that can also be played with the SIXAXIS on my 32".

edit: plus I don't even have to convert .mkv's. I can just take all my .mkv's and load them up on my 80GB external hard drive and plug into the PS3. I might even get a bigger one if I fill up.

edit x2: once haxxorz hack the gpu(graphics card) and it can be accessed through linux its going to be a whole new ball game. PSX, N64, etc. emulators. Possibly linux based games like for instance the Linux version of Unreal 2004, etc. etc. That will be a very awesome day in the hacking community.

how do you do this? can you play .mkv's off of dvd-r's too? No Linux is an operation system on your PS3. Thus you can use the VLC media player which reads .mkv's. The PS3 can't read .mkv's off of discs.

Let me get this straight: I can watch HD DVD videos from my PS3 if I'm running Linux (or convert the mkv files to mp4 if I'm not)?

Hmm. I suppose this means I'd need an HD DVD driver to rip the movies, no?

All the talk about ripping hd movies and playing them on my ps3 got me a little excited.. but then I remembered that I can just play movies from my PC.

Either way, you're building a library on a hard drive.

For some reason on my Windows XP desktop when I try to transfer an HD DVD(Knocked Up) in .mkv onto my external 80GB hard drive that is already in FAT32 it says the file is too big. Knocked Up is about 4.37GB and I have over 70GB free on the external.

FAT32 has a 4GB file size limit.

I thought it was something like that but apparently not because I just formatted the hard drive and now its transferring fine. I'll let you guys now how playback is on the PS3 on the VLC. My 2004 compaq computer that has 512mb of ram, an athlon xp processor, and onboard graphics runs HD DVD's decent.

Since NTFS can do large file sizes.

I know to use the HDD in the XMB, it has to be FAT32.

Is this true in Linux as well?

I haven't experimented with Linux on the PS3 yet, but the XMB allows connecting to media servers on your network.

I setup TVersity on my XP machine, and have it streaming videos to the PS3. It will automatically transcode everything on the fly, so that the PS3 can play any movie that your PC can. You can also disable the transcoding feature if you're planning on only playing videos that the PS3 natively supports (ie: .mp4 files).

The best part? You can press the triangle button on the controller and copy any movie to your PS3's hard drive. It took 3-4 minutes to copy a 3GB mp4 over.

I think VLC (in linux) can also connect to media servers, but again I haven't tried it.

My Computer is too fucking slow to use TVersity (it's a 1.6ghz p4). Trying to stream HD content will kill it. It doesn't even PLAY HD content at all (unless it's a low profile 720p vid).

That god for PS3.

What programs are you guys using to convert?
