Are you a college student? You can get a free copy of XP (or even Vista) through the MSDNAA program on campus.
On getting Vista, it really depends what you want it for and what you'll do with it. You don't need Vista to run all of what is coming out now in the game side of things.. but make sure there are Vista drivers for all of your hardware (especially your network card) before you make the jump. It definitely isn't for anyone.. I found it to be more of a pain in the ass than it's worth, and reverted back to XP x64.
