Is there a way to trick your Wii into letting you download Japanese games for the Virtual Console (provided that you buy JP point cards)?

The reason I ask is because it can be done with the PS3 and with good effect (different demos, a decent selection of PSOne games). I like the US lineup for the Wii VC but there are some things that will probably never cross the pond.

They sell downloadable PSone games on the Playstation Network in Japan.

So he's saying he's able to trick the PS3 into letting him buy and download those games, and wondering if the same can be done to buy and download Japanese VC games on the Wii.

You have to buy the prepaid cards through an import videogame shop. www.ncsx.com has both the Japanese and Hong Kong store cards. Just go to their website, find the "ye olde NCSX shop" link and look under "Import PS3 hardware".

I was hoping that you could do essentially the same thing with a US Wii and JP VC titles but alas, it's not to be.

There's a video of it being done on youtube. I'm too lazy to find it for you, but do a search there.

Found it, nice, here's hoping for a non-Wii sports including Wii by Xmas.

EDIT - Unfortunately, in the comments in mentions something about losing points when switching regions with the 2.2 FW. Then again, perhaps if you were at zero points to start with, you could switch regions, buy some points (or add them with a card) and then make sure you spend all the points before switching back to your home region.

The problem with the trick show in Youtube is that it only applies to PAL regions. A US Wii only allows you to change your region to countries in North and South America. You can't switch it to Japan or the UK so this is a no go. The reason it works for that AUS Wii user is because they can choose the UK in their region settings.
