i have both kingdom hearts already( i know they arent turn based) and okami too. Any ones that are just as epic and good that im missing out on or havent heard of?8-)
Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG (an epic ARPG though) and Okami is an adventure game.
As far as epic RPG games on PS2 the Final Fantasy games are as epic as it gets. Try the backlog of PSX FF games or for sorta epic try *Star Ocean 3, Shadow Hearts 2, *Rogue Galaxy or *Radiata Stories. *Not typical turn base games.
Or check out http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews-ps2ed.html and read some reviews on what you might like.

Jump all over Dragon Quest 8 if you haven't already played it. Granted, its plot is a little more lighthearted than an FF game, but it's immensely fun and superbly done throughout.
Valkyrie Profile 2 is pretty epic, too.

Yeah i would definatley say DQ8 should be the next one you play. And check out the Shin Megami Tensai Games. They are a little more mature and not so cutesy but great rpg's
Just a heads up OP Dragon Quest VIII is the complete opposite of Final Fantasy. Not epic but long solid gameplay/lvl grinding.

Persona 1+2 are pretty rare and for the PSX
Persona 3 was released about 2 months, and I definitely recommend playing it if you're a RPG fan, also pick up Shin Megami Tensei Nocture, Digital Devil Saga 1+2 if you can.
The Shin Megami Tensei games will kick your @$$ though, so exercise caution when playing, you could easily lose hours of leveling up and progress by making a small mistake (P3 is a bit easier compared to the other games though).

I've personally never played the Persona series, but I've played LOTS of Nocturne and the Digital Devil Sagas. I didn't really include them in the "epic rpg" genre since their plots are shaky at best (DDS is alright, but Nocturne hardly even has one and DDS2's is just frickin' weird). As far as gameplay goes, though, they're top-notch and, as aerozero said, about the hardest thing you can possibly imagine. This is particularly true for Nocturne. If your main character dies, it's game over regardless of how buff your support demons are.
And DQ8 is most certainly epic. You don't need CG cutscenes to be epic.

Compared to FFXII, DQVIII feels a lot slower to me. It's more old school, simple gameplay (though the game is difficult unless you level grind) than a story and complex gameplay driven RPG like FFX/XII.

I don't know if I'd call them epic, but Wild Arms RPGs are good.
Epic epic would be Suikoden 2.
FFVI is epic-ish.

Agreed. Suikoden II is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Great story, best villain of all time, and a plot that isn't the typical bullshit.
The only thing I hate is the music... I don't know why, but some songs annoy me.

It's PS1, and it's 100$+ on ebay complete. It's worth every penny.

a very un-epic but excellent rpg is found in Breath of Fire V. The game eschews saving the world in favor of saving one life, and escaping a depressing subterranean wasteland to find the long forgotten sky.

White Knight Story seems to play very similarly to FFXII (though, of course, it won't be out for awhile, and I haven't tried it personally).

Xenosaga is an excellent series. Just be aware that there is a huge change in art direction with the 2nd game. Also, you'll spend a lot of time just watching the game. It's really more of a playable movie than a game.
Oh, and the plot is somewhat convoluted. Especially the second game (my least favorite of the trilogy).

You could also try Vagrant Story. The battle system is turn based and kind of similar to FFXII.

Can someone explain to me how they are similar? I've seen plenty of people compare the two, but from what I can tell VS is all about making weapons to hit the enemy's weakness, using combos and keeping your "risk" down, and FFXII is just set a gambit and watch. So wtf are people talking about?

Don't bother with Xenosaga unless you have 200 hours to finish the whole series. DQ8 is a much safer bet but also much lighter fare.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the shadow hearts games yet? 1 and 2 are some of the best games from last generation. Very dark, detailed world and story.
Xenosaga is my favorite game series of all time, but unless you really want to study the game world and the backstories etc, it's kind of a pain to follow everything.

Erm, I spent about as much time playing the Xenosaga trilogy as I did playing DQ8, ~100hrs each.
Yeah, I spent about 120 hours on DQ VIII.
If you don't want to get a PS1 game like Suikoden II (understandable as it ain't cheap), Suikoden V is the next best thing I'm told. I haven't played II but I did finish V and thought it had one of the best stories I've ever seen in a console RPG. The turn-based battling is somewhat plain, but it has the warfare aspects and the dueling to mix it up a bit.
Grandia III has an awesome combat system that is turn-based at heart but allows for real-time positioning of characters and the ability to knock enemies back around the turn wheel so they don't kill you (a critical skill as it can be difficult in parts). The story is OK and the game is fairly short (30 hours or so), but if you want to knock off a solid RPG without spending several weeks on it, it is a good choice.
But otherwise, if you haven't played DQ VIII get right on that! Look at all these other games afterwards! As for myself, I have yet to play FF X or XII and need to get to one of those sooner or later.
Shadow Hearts 2. 1 isnt bad but 3 is kind of a let down.

Shadow Hearts 1 and 2 are masterpieces.
3 isn't as bad as everyone says, as long as you go into it knowing it won't be NEARLY as good as the first two.

I didn't have as much fun with DQ8 as everyone else so I got through pretty quickly. Also with the hourlong cutscenes in the first one I ended up spending almost 100 hours because I would either pass out during them or I'd go do something around the house while it was still going. Diff'rent strokes I guess.

My recommendations:
DQ8 (best game I have ever played, took me 80 hours to beat, spent 107 hour total. Huge overworld, epic game).
Shadow Hearts: Covenant (epic, weird, funny, and WTF at the same time)
SH:From the New World (Not as good as covenant, but very good)
Rogue Galaxy (from level 5, makers of dq8. Great action RPG)

Shadow Hearts & SH2: Covenant, Suikoden V, Rogue Galaxy, Dragon Quest VIII--those are all fine choices. Grandia II & III are both pretty good but not really epic RPGs, Xenosaga is hit or miss for a lot of people I think.

I finished Episode 1 in 30 hours. I'm almost done with Ep.2 and have less than 20 hours on the game clock. I don't know how you got 200 hours.

I remember the second game seeming much longer than it actually took. Does the game clock stop during cutscenes?
It can also take quite a bit of time to get everything if you are a completionist (not me). I think I spent ~70 hours for the entire trilogy.

Basically, you can't go wrong with anything on that first page (rated 7.5 or higher). The scary thing is that I have most of those . Let's see, of the 49 games on that page, I have 34 and yet have played just 8 of them (including KH II which I never finished).
Of course, many of those aren't turn-based like the OP wanted. But look on that list, read the reviews to see what the combat is like, and go from there.
Though you really ought to start with DQ VIII ;).
That list is an interesting little experiment on the way game reviews change over the life of a system though. Note that many of the highest rated games are some of the first PS2 RPGs. I would expect those probably wouldn't score quite as high now. They scored well for the "next gen" sheen they had at the time. I'm thinking in particular of FF X, Suikoden III, Dark Cloud 2, Baldur's Gate, and a few others. Not that they aren't excellent games, and not that many of those scores aren't essentially identical (really, what's the diff between a 9.1 and an 8.5?). I just thought it was interesting.

I thought the original was a shitbox, but Covenant is incredible.
I can't recommend Dragon Quest VIII enough. I'm also a huge fan of Suikoden III.
