I bought my ps2 about 1 1/2 yrs ago and have kept it in pretty good condition. I never abused it or anything. Then about 2 months ago I started getng DRE's. I sent it in to Sony to get fixed. I got it back about a month ago, and everything seemed to be working fine for about a week before I had another problem. It wasn't DRE's this time, but some of my games would only load up to the PLAYSTATION 2 logo screen and not load at all. Then with other games the sound would get messed up.The ps2 is still in working condition. It will play most games, but it will mess up for a few. Now I don't know what to do. I already tried a lens cleaner. Should I send it back in to get "fixed" or should i just sell it on ebay and go buy a new ps2? How much would I get for it on ebay? In case it influences your suggestion I would be selling it w/ Madden '01 & '02,about 7 demo discs, an interact controller, and everything that came in the original package. Thanks ahead of time for any response.

I dunno how much you would be able to get for it.....to be honest though I wouldn't bother sending it back in. There have been rumors of a price drop in April, plus the new versions of the PS2 are alot better than the one's that were put out 1&1/2 to 2 years ago. I'd just wait, maybe sell it or trade it, and get a new one.

I had the SAME exact problem monkey. I used to have a first gen PS2 (picked it up 3 weeks after launch). I never really had any problems with it other than NBA Street not wanting to load occasionally. Then one day, it wouldn't boot my PS2 Linux Kit and several of my games. Like yourself, I take very good care of my PS2 so I know it wasn't my fault. I called Sony customer service and sent it in for repair. It took a few weeks to get it back but when I did, it was in worse condition than when I sent it out!

So I called Sony customer service right back and complained. They apologized for the screw up gave me two choices, to send it back in for more repairs or to have it replaced with a refurb. Now at first I thougth to myself "I don't want a damned refurb!" But I quickly realized that I was going to have a refurb anyway if they fixed my unit so I decided to go the exchange route. Best decision I could have made.

Not only did I get a working unit, I received a complete PS2. Cables, CONTROLLER :D, and system and I only sent them my old PS2! I was so jazzed when I saw that controller. I'd been looking to get a second DS2 and they hooked me up for free! And it doesn't stop there! During the call where I opted for the exchange, I complained that I was going to have to pay for shipping again and asked if I could be refunded the shipping costs since this problem was out of my control. (Shipping was about $11 each time I mailed the PS2 out.) While they weren't able to refund my shipping costs, they did offer me a new game of my choice! WooHoo!

I tried to get something new at the time like GTA: Vice City but they discouraged that. They told me that I would probably end up waiting a long time for that to come in since it was so new. Instead, I opted for ATV Offroad 2 which had a waiting list but not as long as GTA:VC. Turns out I got the game before the replacement PS2 arrived! (In hindsight, I should have stuck with GTA:VC.)

So in the end, I got a perfectly working replacement PS2, a new Dual Shock 2, and a free game. And all I had to do was speak up a little and wait for things to happen. :D Your Mileage May Vary but I HIGHLY doubt it will vary that much.

I actually had that DRE problem for Virtua Fighter 4, and it drove me NUTS. So I opened up my PS2 and moved the little lens knob a couple space, and now my PS2 works fine. Probably won't help much, but I thought I'd share.

Does anybody know if they always send extra stuff if you opt for the exchange?

I think if you opt for exchange they just give you a new box for your system regardless of if you give them the whole thing.

I definatly say send it to them, You;re better off with them than trying to get an equal value for it on ebay.

Here is another case of a classic "my PS2 broke" case. I think they make them flimsy on purpose to get more money. Damn Sony greedy ppl.

Errr.... 99% of the time, those repairs are free buddy... The only time it's not gonna be free is if your dumb enough to open up the console, or you did something stupid to it... like drop a 10 ton xbox on it, or something, crushing it to the size of a gamecube...

i've never had DRE's on my console (first gen) but the rumble mechanism did fry, so I can no longer feel vibrations, I called up sony and they said it was a free repair, I just had to ship it to them... of course i'm still to effin lazy to do it...

What I am about to suggest is illegal and unethical. However I have no problem telling people about it since so many people have had the infamous "fmv skipping" problem back when the first playstation was released and sony refused to acknowledge it. Buy a new ps2. Swap the serial number stickers. Return the broken one. I have successfully done this in the past. Good luck if you intend to give it a try.

Sure, but alot of ppl don't send it back in. It still doesn't matter, PS2 still breaks too easy either way you look at it.

They repaired it for free, that's kind of unusual. Though, I don't think they are gonna cover your shipping costs. Was it under warranty still?

I got a new NETWORK bundle ps2 for christmas and it broke sometime in January. The sound kept stopping. And I too take good care of my systems. Dusting, etc. I sent in an incomplete system because I lost the composet video cables, and was just sent a brand new one. IMO Sony makes some crappy systems, ive had to fix so many regular ps1's because of the laser being misaligned. In addition none of my personal other cd based game systems have messed up. But I could be just lucky :)
