My TV is 720p and everything looks fantastic.

1080p is better, but unless you get a bigger TV the word is that you really won't be able to tell the difference between it and 720p.

720p is fine unless you're sitting super close to it.

At 8-10 feet for further away from a 50" TV most people can't tell any difference between 720p and 1080p anyway.

I wouldnt get a tv that does only 720p... get one that does 720p, and 1080i that way you're covered, and don't have to worry about a 1080i/p only game beng downscaled to 480p.

Do most 720p TV's do 1080i? Because my TV wasn't advertised as being able to do it, but it can.

Yeah, any 720p will do 1080i....in the sense that it can accept a 1080i signal and downconvert it and display it at 720p.

Actually, if you want to be technical, nearly all 720p sets display at 768p--so every source you put into it, be it 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i is scaled up or down to 768p.

I'm happy with my 720P/1080i. Sure, 1080p would be nice, but so would a gold toilet seat and a manservant to wipe my ass.

I got a 37" Westinghouse 1080p LCD for $799 shipped with a 2-year all-purpose warranty from CostCo. It's great. Not all that much more than most comparable "name-brand" 720p models...cheaper than some, actually.

Not sure what size you're looking at, so I'm not sure if that helps or not, but I thought I'd mention it.

With your discount I would go with

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8249683&st=samsung+40&lp=5&type=product&cp=1&id=1169512288825.

You will get more off of that than you will say a Westinghouse or Insignia.

Although with your discount I would save up and buy this (you get almost $1000 off it from what I heard :D )

Its a discontinued model so it might be somewhat hard to track down. This is all I found after a quick search, but its an even older model than the one mentioned earlier.

I always check the specs cause I don't know if most 720p tvs do 1080i. I wouldn't want to get stuck with a tv that can't do 1080i or at least downgrade. I rather have that does 720p and 1080i exclusively..

when is black friday?

Friday after thanksgiving.

Nov. 23rd this year. They usually have killer TV deals, though usually the bargain brands like Westinghouse, Vizio etc. But they're ok if you're not a videophile.

The one catch is people camp out over night to buy all the super deal items, and those TVs are among them. So be prepared to camp if you see one you want. Usually no rainchecks on the sale items.

As for TVs to look at. I got the 50" Sony LCD rear projection set (KDF50-E2000) for $999.99 at Circuit City in June and I'm very pleased with it. Some screen door effect on very bright scenes in the only drawback I've found, but otherwise I love it. Great price for a nice picture and a 50" screen. I think it's a discontinued model as well, so may be hard to find though. But I think I still see at least the 46" model on display around here (DC area).

Yes, the way your eyes decide what looks good is done in this order:

1. Contrast Ratio/Dynamic Range
2. Color Saturation
3. Colorimetry/Color Temperature or Grayscale
4. Resolution

Check out this episode of the HT guys.

My beef with 720p TV's is that none of them have a 1280x720 panel. They are all that 1366x768, meaning that even a 720p signal is scaled.

Atleast 1080p sets all have 1920x1080 panels. Mind you 90% of games this gen will end up being 720p, so scaling is occurring anyway...

Do most 720p sets have the option to not scale a 720p signal? i.e., just have a border around the picture?

It's a gamble to buy a 720p set when you can save a little more (or find a good deal) for a 1080p set. Anyways, 720p is the sweet spot for most games being developed. Some devs opt to not even bother with 1080p. Games like Warhawk are in 720p even though they were designed to be system sellers for a 1080p system.

Overall, I think it's a bad idea to buy a native 720p TV. A TV is supposed to ideally last you 10-15 years. So I'd sport the extra and get a 1080p set.

It's all in the size of the TV, as has been said before. If you're going for a larger set, 1080p is a good bet... but for smaller sets, like say 37" and under, the difference in resolution will not make up for the price hike for going 1080p (depending upon brand of course.) I have a 32" Samsung 720p/1080i LCD (LN-S3125D). I got it for the contrast ratio and # of inputs (comparably speaking for other 32" sets.) It's the sweet spot for my entertainment center, and it's got a stunning picture, even up close. When the need for a new spot to put my consoles/TV arises, I'll look into getting a larger TV... 46" or so... which then I'll get a 1080p (but that's way down the road...)

Whichever you choose, of course, don't skimp on features solely for price. A cheap TV isn't always the best buy...

Here's a cool chart to help picking out a TV based on optimal picture quality from screen size and viewing distance. 42-46" seems to be the sweet spot for a 1080p TV for small apartments and average living rooms.

Most (maybe even all) 42" plasmas do 1280x720. At least as of the models out in June when I was looking.

Otherwise pretty much everything else is 1366x768 (768p). I'm fine with scaling personally--thought all the 1366x768 sets I looked at looked better or the sasme as the few that were 1280x720 (samsung, panasonic and vizio 42" plasmas) that I checked out. Smaller pixels=higher res, the most TVs out now (some budget brand models aside) do a good job with scaling. 480i scaling is not great sometimes, but 720p up to 768p or 1080i down to 768p looks great on most sets.

Then again I'm really not a videophile at all. So maybe the uber picky among that group notice minute differences that bug them. Always been happy as shit not to be a video or audiophile and get annoyed by stupid shit like that and can just sit back and enjoy the movies, tv, games, music etc.
