Coming off my drunk post of is Eternal Darkness good (2 weeks ago), I thought I would post my admiration for the Wii. I got drunk watching K-State (my alma matter) whoop up on Texas.

Vanilla vodka mixed into Coca Cola Zero this time (last time it was Wine)

This thing is f'n good (as in the Wii, not the drinks, though they are good).

That is all. Feel free to post or lock :D .

Maybe I should drink more and I'd enjoy my Wii more!

Doubt it though, as I drink plenty as is. :D

But only good imported and/or microbrew beer, no girly mixed drinks and wine for me! ;)

I used to drink Old Milwaukee Light when I was in college (which has been about 4 yrs removed now), well I got it again for the first time last week and I couldn't believe how shitty it tasted. I remember in college telling everyone it tasted like all the other beers.

Yeah, I can't drink any of that cheap crap I used to drink as an undergrad (2002).

Sam Adams is about as low as I go these days. And absolutely no light beers--not that may beers that I enjoy that you can see through. :D

Love a good stout or Belgian abbey ale.

Sam Adams Octoberfest

That's a pretty tasty Oktoberfest, but the malt flavor is pretty bland compared to Christian Moerlein's Oktoberfest. If you can find that in your area, I highly recommend it.

Black Russian with Stoli, Kahlua and Milk.

Once you add milk/cream, it's a white russian.

I will look for that beer at the local wine and beer place. I also will mention that the Harvest Moon is an excellent pumpkin/octoberfest style beer.

I can drink cheap beer when that's all that is available, but if I am buying I am getting good stuff, like 8 bucks a sixer good, I consider Yeungling slumming it, and I used to hang out with the grand daughter of the company... Mmm Yeungling...

$8 a sixer good? Hell a lot of the imports I buy fairly often run $8-15 a bottle--though they're pint or larger bottles. But still.

$8 a sixer is getting in Sam Adams range, good, but not great. Though there is some tasty microbrew stuff in that price range if you can find a store that doesn't have a ridiculous mark up.

mykevermin

That's nonsense. Great beer is like great wine (or, I hear, a great cigar): it's easy to find a great beer that's $15, or a great bottle of wine at $100. The challenge, and the fun, is finding a good $7 beer or a good $10 bottle of wine.

Additionally, the marketing of beer is phenomenal because of how it deludes people into thinking a higher price equals higher value. Moreover, they sucker in would-be beer experts with meaningless descriptors (like using "Belgian" by itself, as if that indicates anything about the beer inside).

Some of the best American breweries sell sixers for under $10, and you're surely missing out by thinking that cost is related to quality and taste.

dmaul1114
09-30-2007, 09:44 PM
Oh I agree. Most of the higher priced beer I buy isn't even marketed stuff. Just stuff from Belgian Abbeys etc.

But you're right that you have to be careful and not get suckered in by the name/country. While many of my favorite beers are from Belgium, some of the worst I've had are as well.

I just try to sample a few different beers a month, and make one of them a pricey import (i.e. a $10-15 bottle).

And those are just a once in a while treat. Most of the time I just grab a microbrew or import 6 pack for $8-12, or hit one of the local beer places that sell every thing in single bottles and let you build your own sixers.

My buddy and I are admittedly beer snobs though. We even have a spreadsheet we keep updated with ratings of all we try. :D

Anyway, here are a few of my personal faves in no particular order, just pulling everything 4/5 or higher (out of the 74 rated so far) in my ratings at the moment..

Mc Chouffe Aritsanal Belgian Brown Ale
Westmalle Trappist Ale Dubbel (a belgian ale)
Beamish Draught Irish Stout (Can)
Samuel Smiths Taddy Porter
Corsendonk- Abbey Brown Ale (another belgian)
Sam Adams Summer Ale
Guinness Draught (Can)
Delerium Tremens
Delerium Nocturnum
Rogue Shakespeare Stout
Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout
Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
Maudite (unibroue)
Rogue Dead Guy Ale
St Peters Old-Style Porter

The variation, price, and potential chance encounter with cilantro in addition to/instead of hops makes me stay away from anything from Belgium (with the exception of the more conventional Duvel/Chimay/Orval types). Though, if someone offers me one, I'm more than happy to partake.

Samuel Smith is a phenomenal brewery, and I'm very, very partial to Unibroue. In the case of the latter, their brews are unconventional enough that I can't seem to find one that's appropriate in anything but freezing cold weather (not the temperature of the beer, but the climate). They do have an apple-flavored white ale (Lephemere?), but I'm not a fan at all. If you are a unibroue fan and a cheap ass, get thee to a Trader Joe's right away, as they make TJ's house brand.

Not a fan of St. Peter's. A touch *too* traditional, IMO (though it makes for a good conversation piece).

I have a few favorites, but they escape me at the moment. I'm still resenting Saturday night, I suppose.

You guys seem to know quite a bit about Beers, much more than I do (Im more of a pick up the latest deal at the store type of guy), so I will ask this to you guys.

I went to Australia for a yr. in 2003 and really liked the beers called Carlton Draught and Victoria Bitter.

I have kind of wanted to try them again as I can't really remember if they were actually good or if I drank them just because it seemed that everyone did.

You guys know if those can be found anywhere over here?

Yeah, we get some Weyebacher around here since MD borders PA. They have some of there stuff on tap sometimes at a bar/restaurant I go to about once a week.

Yep, those are pretty good. Unfortunately the TJs closest to me (3 miles or so) doesn't have a liquor license (very hard to get one in this county) so they only carry the non-alcoholic variety.

Yep, and if they don't have it a lot of stores will special order stuff for you...though you generally have to buy a whole case.

Some are willing to buy a case and see how it will sell though.

Heres a topic: Which is better and why, Zelda: Twilight Princess or Metroid Prime: Corruption?

Does anybody think the best game on the Wii is one other than these two?

dmaul1114
10-03-2007, 12:54 PM
I'd give both 9.5's. If I had to pick one, I'd go with Zelda, because it was a good deal longer. Nearly 50 hours in and still haven't done everything. Metroid 3 was great, but around half as long for me, so given equal scores, it loses out just on length.

Nothing else in the current Wii library is even close. Only Super Paper Mario warranted a purchase for me, and I'd probably give that a 7.5.

Stone Brewery - Ruination. I'd give it a 9.8. Not much else even comes close. I've had much more enjoyment with this IPA brew than any other.

Despite the length disadvantage, I'm going with Metroid. It just seemed so much more polished than Zelda. I think it's the Metroid's level of difficulty that puts it over the edge - specifically, the fact that it actually has difficulty. So far, Metroid's my favourite on the Wii, followed by Zelda, Sports, RE4, Godfather, SPM, Play, and Trauma Center.

...

Man, I wish I drank.

ROUGE, that is a great brewery. Love it.
If you like a light, but hoppy pils, try Tusker from Nigeria. It has an Elephant on the label. You wont believe how hoppy and full bodied it tastes compared to its color.
Im not really a lighter beer guy either, but trying that, its an illusion.

If I were Canadian, I'd...nah. Too easy. ;)

Damn, I'm gonna have to track down and try Rogue Dead Guy Ale just on the name alone!

It's damned good, but I admit if you buy the growler of it that you'll need to have friends help you drink it. I have to say that it's been one of the more inconsistent ales I've drank, but despite that, it's always been good. It's a fairly malty ale, and sometimes notes of vanilla really stood out to me, and other times it had a distinct cherry-like tartness. Could have been what I was having with it, but I dunno.

dmaul1114
10-04-2007, 01:34 PM
I've never had any inconsistency in that one.

One I get a lot of inconsistency in is Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale.

Some times it's nice and smooth, with the caramel flavor really coming out--probably a 4.5 or higher. But other times (unfortunately the majority for me) it has a sharp metallic taste to it.

No time like the present to start! Assuming you're of age of course.

Especially living in Canada, you should be able to find some good brews, including stuff from the aforementioned Unibroue, with ease.

Maybe there is a better kind, but I was more of a fan of just mixing it in with Coke. I am wondering now how it would taste with AW Cream Soda. That to me, sounds really good.

Zelda was definitely a more "epic" game and very enthralling, but Metroid looked so much better graphically and the action was a lot faster. I guess it depends on whether you like FPS's better or Zelda games better. I'd have to go with Zelda because of length.

Neither has much replay ability.

Good time for this thread to pop up as I had another great beer this week.

Sierra Anniversary IPA. Probably the best IPA I've had. Nice and hoppy without being overly bitter.
