Question regarding Xbox Live trial cards

I bought a used Xbox at GS recently with the $50 coupon and want to play online. I just picked up a new copy of Battlefied 2 for xbox and there's a sticker on the cover that says it comes with a two month trial of Xbox live. However, it says the trial expires like sometime in 2006. I've read online that people have been able to use expired trial codes though. Does anybody have any experience fairly recently of signing up for a trial with a code that expired in 2006? The game was only $10, but I'm not sure I want to open it and keep it if the trial code is no good.

I don't think the 2 months trials work anymore, or at least from what I have heard about them.
