You may use PS1 memory cards in a PS2 system, but only to save PS1 games. Likewise only PS2 memory cards may be used to save PS2 games.

Another thing, the PS1 save data can be transferred to the PS2 card for storage only, so it helps save on needing multiple PS1 cards if you don't want to delete old saves.

you will definitely need a ps2 mem card for GoW saves.

Yes, at one point I had all my PSX stuff on the 40 GB FFXI HDD. If I wanted to sit down and play an RPG or something that I knew was on the HDD, I'd just stick in a blank PSX memory card, transfer the file I needed and be on my way. I found it easier than juggling the 8 memory cards I had been using.

Then I got a PS3 and spent like two hours transferring everything into that HDD.

There's a device you have to buy...

It's around 15 bucks everywhere but sometimes they go on sale. You'll need to take the stuff off your PS2 HDD and put it back on memory cards to make the transfer. Then make virtual PSX and PS2 memory cards within the PS3's HDD. It takes awhile depending on how much stuff you have but it's pretty convenient once you're done.

At this point I have probably around 20 virtual memory cards on the PS3 with names like "PS2 RPGs 01", "PSX Fighting 01".

EDIT - I should mention, you can only transfer things that you can put on a memory card. Things like all the FFXI game data cannot be transferred as they can't be moved onto a PS2 memory card.
