I just bought Hellboy on DVD and it came in a hard plastic case like a normal DVD and on the outside there was a cardboard sleeve with all the same info on it. Finding Nemo came this way too and so does the new Velvet Revolver CD - what is up with this trend? I just throw the sleeve away... what do you think of it?? :?:

CD's have been doing that for years so in that regard it's not a new trend. Maybe they think it makes the packaging look nicer or something. I only keep them if there is different artwork or something. I almost never keep them for DVDs though cause it usually just the same thing that's on the regular case cover.

Only ones I have that are like that are Disney movies. Oh and an HK Anime DVD Sleeve that is made out of some sort of plastic.

Agreed, they always stick out further and look really retarded and cheap.

The only two things I have with a sleeve-like thing is Futurama Season 1 and Dead Like Me season 1, both of which I kept it for. I'd never get rid of an extra thing like that, just for the sake of completeness.

Why? You think they'll be worth something? Not likely unless it's some sort of special release that may become rare.

I know that some companies have a rebate and you can cut out the UPC from the sleeve instead of the actual dvd case. That's much better in my opinion but they are really useless. I just wish PC games would come in dvd cases like Deus Ex did this time. I hate boxes, even small ones.

If I want a $5 rebate I have to cut out the UPC from the cardboard sleeve on my copy of Hellboy. Plus, it's covered with price tags from FYE. After I cut the UPC I'm throwing it away...

Actually, yeah, it does kind of affect the value of it. Especially if you're big into trading and stuff...collectors and film buffs like everything complete and that means keeping the sleeve. Besides, it just look cool...offhand, the ones I have with sleeves are like Die Another Day, The Rundown, both seasons of the Office...
Anyway...point is...keep them. Why not?

I have no clue what their purpose is, but i keep them. Most of the time they are nice and shiny like the finding nemo, and the borne identity i just bought was like that to.

First, "why not?" is not a reason to keep something. That logic would fill up my house with alot of useless crap!
Second, in most cases, I really don't think it looks that much different. Besides, those cardboard sleeves are flimsy and will get little dents in 'em even if you are very careful with your DVDs. I do keep some, like the Scarface SE DVD that came out, I kept that one cause it does look cool. Or I keep 'em if they actually serve a purpose (like keeping the set from opening). But usually, they are just the same cover art as the disc case.....I believe this is the case with Die Another Day isn't it? In those cases they are pointless IMO. I seriously doubt that a DVD sale of DAD or Finding Nemo will fetch that much more on ebay if it has that sleeve. As with everything else, It depends on the title and the nature of the release. I don't trade DVDs/CDs so for my purposes the value is not affected I guess. To each his/her own.

Yeah...on ebay it probably doesn't make much difference, but in trades it does (to me, at least, and I'm sure more of the diehard DVD traders). It's kind of a personal preference thing in the end. Not trying to force my will upon thee...just throwing out my two cents. :)

If everyone throws away their sleeves and one person doesn't I'm sure years down the road that one with the sleeve will pull a few more bucks. So go ahead guys, keep throwing those sleeves out.

I keep them. I don't know why, but I have a stack up them by my DVD shelf.

totally agree.
the sleeve in OP talking about I keep that it is not as annoying as the new cases that have the 2 locking tabs on the side. I forget they are their and try to open it.

I usually just leave them on the cases. I think the last one I got with a sleeve was when I bought Bubba Ho-tep.
