On the 20th of November, 2007, Death Note (the anime) will finally reach our shores (legally) on DVD.
There are two editions for each volume (9 in total), of which will include a figure of a character from the series.
The first is Ryuuk....
WELL
I'm here to ask..
WHERE SHOULD I BUY THESE DISCS?
Online? What site?
In the stores? Where? Best Buy has good deals on releases,
yet will it have this limited figure of only 1,500 units? Or shall I buy elsewhere?
~~THANK YOU!!!~~~

Each volume is only like 4 episodes each, that's damn expensive. There might be 9 or 10 volumes by the end of it. Then again maybe this is the standard price for anime, never bought any before.

Anyone know what size those figures will be? I'm guessing pretty small.

eh, who knows, remember the Appleseed ones?
And the Scrapped Princess ones, no wait those were busts weren't they.

The First 2 volumes of Scrapped Princess had these overly huge figures (they're kind of ill-proportioned as the figures have extremely long legs, even for anime characters) that were about 12" tall, the other 4 volumes came with 1 - 2 smaller ~5" figures (which looked very nice) for the other 4 volumes...
It looks like Vol. 2 comes with a Light figure and Vol. 3 will come with L, that is, according to Rightstuf. The don't mention the size of the figures though... if you want to see them they are here:

Those are some very nice prices from FYE...

...please tell me you're being sarcastic.
Either way, thanx for the comment, I got a good chuckle out of it.
After a few years of anime hiatus, this series looks interesting enough to bring me back. I'm "acquiring" a certain version as we speak, and if it's good I'll probably pick this series up.
Anybody knows if this series tanks later on or not? I can read reviews but I'd rather just hear the opinions of other CAGs.

Anybody knows if this series tanks later on or not?It tanks fantastically. If I ever buy it, I'll basically avoid the last three or four volumes.

I'm guessing you didn't read the last part where I mentioned I've never purchased anime before and judging by your reaction, anime is indeed expensive.
ANYways...it's a great series, it's fairly fast paced up to a point where it slows down for maybe 6-7 episodes and then it's back on track. It starts getting into the motions towards the end but it ends soon enough at 37 episodes.
It's basically about two characters in a cat and mouse situation and they're very entertaining battle of the wits.

Anime is pretty expensive, but it's a lot more bearable these days with those Slim DVD Box set. I'm glad I barely caught the tailend of anime on VHS, where it was the same price it is now ($29.99 MSRP) but for only two episodes.
Judging from your response and Z-Saber's response, I'll check out the whole thing first, then wait for a Slim DVD Box Set....unless those LE figurines are that good.

I freakin' love this anime to death...definitely one of my favs of all time; even though it starts to get crappy towards the end.
I'd say wait for one of rightstuf's sales, or check out deepdiscountdvd

i did think it got a little slow for 2 or 3 episodes near the end...but the entire anime as a whole is one of the most intelligent and fascinating i've EVER seen! I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing it AND seeing it!!!!!!

Heck, I thought the absolute worst bits of the show were in the middle with the third Kira. It could only go uphill (though still not a big improvement) after that awful subplot. Too bad, since it started out so well.

Not really that expensive when you consider its $15-20 for a 1.5 hour movie most of the time too.

Most of those awful scenes were during that arc! Ugh, so bad.

death note, IMO, was absolutely incredible...despite the funny gay scenes between light and L...i personally enjoyed the *see spoiler* part and i thought it tied in extremely well to the overall plotline.
And btw Kirin Lemon, since it's been a while since i seen you post...i remember you recommending R.O.D. the TV to me...and i really have to say unbiasly that i'm a little over half way through it and it has not really sparked a lot of my interest cuz most of the episodes i find myself falling asleep in...i LOVED R.O.D. the OVA...but i have extremely low hopes for the rest of R.O.D. the TV. just thought i should inform you since i took up your suggestion back when there was the Geneon remix sale over at TRSI

I agree that part was the worst section of the series. I haven't seen the anime yet, I've read the manga, and that whole arc just had me rolling my eyes.

I considered the part where they introduce the business to be a slow down. However you realize it was all part of Light's genius plan around episode 25. With L dead and the introduction of his replacements, I thought it started getting into the motions but I still say it held up reasonably well to the end and is definitely one of my favorite anime series.

I must be the only one who wasn't dissapointed with those sections...
Anyway the FYE deal would rock if it weren't for the fact that it's a rebate... I loathe rebates.

You're watching it wrong. Try harder.
But seriously, the TV series is much more character-driven than the OVA that preceded it, which I feel is a good thing. At first I wanted more action, but I grew to realize the error of my ways. It's a show that I love to come back to and rewatch often - the characters are just so interesting and endearing, and it's fun to watch them interact with each other. Hopefully you'll realize how awesome it is someday too.

The Death Note Manga is so much Better then the anime and it also CONTINUES off where the anime ends. All 12 volume of the deathnote manga already release in the states, u could find them at ur local barnes and noble.

I'd have to disagree. The anime does such a wonderful job of setting the mood with its epic soundtrack. I also loved the over the top writing motions from Light/Mikami. IMO the manga's descriptions were excessive at times. Also, the manga doesn't continue that much further from the anime...it was a little pointless anyhow and I preferred the anime's ambiguous/depressing ending.

Oh yeah, forgot to address this earlier...
If they're going to be the same as the figures that came with the Japanese DVDs (and it seems this is the case), they're this big:
http://img189.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/0/2/5/3/chiyuyu27-img600x450-1191511058dscf4496.jpg
They're all to scale, so the human figures will be smaller than the death gods. If you want pictures of the other figures, just search around the Yahoo Japan auctions.

The anime pretty much adapted most of the manga, so the manga doesn't really continue past where the anime ends. They have slightly different endings, but one doesn't really go farther than the other one does.
As for these DVDs, I'm not really a big fan of single volume DVDs (way too expensive, plus they take up more shelf space), but if the figures are nice enough I may consider collecting these. For sure I'm getting the volume that comes with a Misa figure, because I love her to death!

In the end of volume 12, Misa was leading the group of Kira cultists. The last caption was of her face.

Sweet, I bought that box set as well...if only for Erika Toda as Misa!
Yaaay...and I thought I was the only one who loved Misa. ^_^ Plus, Hirano does her voice...how could you possibly hate her?
In Death Note Vol. 13: How to Read, it says that Misa commits suicide due to depression (most likely because of Light's death)
