Hey, I thought I'd share this little article in PSM's PSNext section. And no, the article isn't actually named, "My PS3's melting!!!". Anyway, here's what it says:
Development sources lucky enough to be on Sony's short list for early PS2 hardware have told us that the first iteration of system they received was smokin'...for real. Evidently, the un-optimized chips and designs ran so hot, some kits actually melted before more industrious developments had the idea to keep theirs in a specially modied min-fridges under their desks, with holes for controller cables and the like. Yikes!
Nothing that important as I'm sure Sony won't ship systems that melt, just thought it'd provide an interesting read for a lot of y'all.

Yeah, I read that too. It was pretty funny.
"Hey, pass me a cold one. There in the fridge there next to the PS3"

One of the ppl with a development kit in a fridge should take a picture and release it when the PS3 comes out. I would rather have it sooner, but I'm sure someone would get in trouble.

Well the PSone's overheated, PS2's had DRE's, and the PS3's Melt....

ps3 is so powerful that it melts itself...... nintendo's new console probably cant even slightly overheat itself.... Sony 1, Nintendo 0.

That was one of the funniest things Ive seen in that mag. Perhaps they need a few more fans.
BTW, is Sony still planning on using Cell technology for the PS3, or are they going to use standard processors?

Let's see, I know there was something on this in PSM as well. Lemme find it. Here it is:
At this year's E3, one of Sony's head hardware gurus talked about a computer being developed by Sony and IBM tht has the Cell processor, the heart of the PS3, at its core. The purpose of this super-powerful computer isn't gaming, but rather the creation of visuals and special effects for movies, TV, and so on. But that doesn't mean it won't have an impact on the game we're playing two years from now.
In fact, the same 3D modeling and animation tools being made available to Hollywod artists will be in the hands of game artists when the first proper PS3 development systems ship. This means that there will be plenty of people already out there who are familiar with how to make things "work" on the PS3, which will definitely help early PS3 games take better advantage of the hardware than PS2's did.
Sounds like another one of Sony's claims flopping. First it was cutting-edge Cell technology for PS3, now it's cutting-edge Cell technology for a computer made for visual effects. WTF?

Why am I not supprised? Sony should not announce major things like this and then change their minds.

This isn't terribly surprising. The process technology that the PS3 chipset is intended to be produced upon only exists in R&D labs right now. Just as with the PS2 chipset Sony is making a bet that the factories will be ready for production in time for launching the product.
Of course, Sony actually lost that bet last time around. The engineering samples and early dev kits for the PS2 were produced on a .25 micron process. (An article detailing the chipset design in Microprocessor Report refer to them as having a die size that would make a PC engineer break out in a cold sweat.) They got horrible yields and ran quite hot. This was acceptable for the small quantities needed but when the time came for producing serious numbers for the Japanese launch they still didn't have the .18 micron lines up and running. So several hundred thousand Japanese launch systems (including the ill-conceived Type III hard drive slot) used chips with a per system cost much higher than the retail price for the entire console. Sony had to absorb some serious losses to get the product out on time but it worked out well in the long term.
The transistor counts on the PS3 chips are many times greater. Although the voltages are lower the sheer number of elements and power leakage issues with the latest production techniques make for some very hot and power hungry chips, as seen with Intel's recent woes.

It doesn't say anything about the PS3 not using Cell technology though, just that they're gonna use it for other things too.

Yeah, I thought that after I already posted and didn't feel like taking back that comment. Still, it doesn't make a lot of sense (to me) what that whole computer ordeal is.

'
Will it absorb the competition and use their abilities on other forms of hardware?

I read somewhere that Sony will be releasing thier system last for the next-gen and I think neXtbox will be out first. I really don't think it will matter too much since all systems will be so powerful. Right now, there isn't THAT much of a difference between the three systems.

He was talking about the hardware. While I assume you don't think Xbox is better than PS2, I'm sure you already know that Xbox's hardware is better.
