Nintendo Does Demos With Wii Online Strategy
October 10, 2007
by: David Oxford
Big N prepares to take Wii online to the next-- er, "new" level.
Following in the footsteps of their DS Download Station initiative with retailers across the country, Nintendo aims to pump up their online presence with the "try before you buy" mentality that has already been adopted by XBox 360 and PlayStation 3.
By allowing users to download demos from home for low prices (perhaps a good opportunity to use leftover Wii Points), Nintendo's President Satoru Iwata believes that there will be no problems with stock and no missed opportunities for sales.
In addition to this, Nintendo will also work with major fixed-line operators to increase the online capabilities of the Wii, while also establishing a call center to assist customers in connecting their Wii to the web.
The current Nintendo online service, the Virtual Console, has 203 titles currently available, and according to Iwata, has achieved 7.8 million downloads worldwide.
As further Wii online information becomes available, AMN will bring you the details.
That would suck if they charge for Wii demos. It seems like the opposite of what the demos would try to accomplish. So I pay for a demo and then pay again for the full game if I like it? Ugh...

Yes. That would indeed suck.
Don't be this stupid, Nintendo.
I wouldn't mind it so much if they went the magazine with a demo disc route like they mentioned in one of their surveys, but to pay for a demo download would be horrible especially since the competition does it for free.

That would indeed suck, but I'd still get them if it was really low points (50 or less) considering that there aren't any online fees.

I'm hoping this is being reported incorrectly, because I'm pretty sure Iwata was talking about Wiiware when he said " there will be no problems with stock and no missed opportunities for sales."
Wii demos? I could potentially understand that, but I think only after being subjected to a cocktail of drugs, lack of sleep, and having to watch Oprah work out on a treadmill for 92 hours. I don't think all of these things will ever happen at once in my lifetime, so that's out.
DS demos I could not understand. Unless one of those demos somehow provides me with sexual pleasure.
And even then, Ninetndo, you'd be getting a wag of the finger.

XBL silver is free and I can download as many demos as I want. Charging for demos is crap. I say this having had a subscription to OPM for the entirety of its run. Demo discs with magazines worked LAST gen. It has no business in THIS gen with the availability of online services.
Just have demos available for free download.

Yeah I do agree...although I wouldn't mind the magazine demo disc option it's still not a great solution.

This has to be mistaken reporting. Nintendo has gotten away with many things in their pricing scheme because too few people are willing to forego a good exclusive (ie Sin and Punishment) to send them a message. That will not be the case for this, though. Nobody who isn't an idiot will pay for a demo, and Nintendo would hear nothing but the chirping of crickets if they went live with a pay-for-play system. Besides, demos already translate to retail dollars by hooking potential buyers on an upcoming game. Gotta be a reporting mistake.

This would actually be worse nickel-and-diming that horse armor.

There aren't any fees associated with downloading demos on any other platform at the moment. You don't need gold live service to get demos on a 360 that comes with silver and all demos on the 360 cost 0 live points. The PS3 has no fee for any of this either so why would you want to pay any money for demos on the Wii when no one else charges you a dime? This is seriously a stupid move and will really taint Nintendo as more and more of a nickel and dime you to death company if they do it this way. I really hope they just make demos free.

Im agreeing with Strell on a mistake between Wiiware and the DS demos. Nintendo would have to be absolutely batshit insane to charge for demos.

I just watched the translated Nintendo conference:

He was talking about WiiWare, not the Demo station.

During the demo station part of the presentation, no pricing was mentioned, just that the channel would work just like the demo stations in stores.

Yeah. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense. Stock for demos? What?
However, even if the quote from Iwata was about something else, the article clearly states "demos from home for low prices". They had to get that from somewhere.
As with the VC, Nintendo will charge what it thinks it can get away with. As long as the Wii prints money, they can charge for whatever they like.
Number of demos I'll download if they charge anything: 0
Now, to get my hands on a cheap Wii points card for S&P...
Hell, I probably wouldn't have downloaded more than a couple demos if they were free!
I don't think charging for them will work...especially if you can get games from te DS download stations at stores for free.

That would royally suck. I'd never pay for a demo. Better be a bogus rumor, or the odds of the Wii remaining in my house after Mario Galaxy will take another hit...

Thank goodness online storage will result in no stock problems for demos. Usually stores just can't keep them on the shelves.
The bigger news would be that they actually have Wii demos. But they don't, yet. Just DS games and Wii game videos.

I love it how several posters skip to the reply button without reading the thread...
Thanks Lebowsky, I appreciate the links.

That has to be wrong. There's no rationale for this at all. I think others are right, that he is confusing Wii Ware and the demos.

Thanks for actually reading the thread. I'm going to post it again, since there are only a few posts on this page...maybe people won't skip.
It was definitely an error in the summary and/or translation:

Thanks for that, I missed it the first time.
Nintendo has done so little that I've liked with the Wii, that such a bone headed move wouldn't have been unfathomable to me.
Glad to see they're not that stupid.

Wouldn't pay for individual demos, but I would pay a one-time fee to download a demo channel.
Not that I'd like it. But I'd do it.

The way I understand it is that there will be the 'Wii for everyone' channel which will contain Wii previews, DS demos and other info as well as the ability to allow gamers to vote on their favorite games.
This channel may not be free.

I don't think I'd pay for the channel even.
Sorry, the competition offers it for free, and likely offers superior service as without an hard drive I doubt we'll get Wii demos, or even full screen 16x9 480p videos.
Just crappy small videos like the Metroid Prime 3 preview channel and DS Demos. For free, I'd definitely take that. But no way I'd pay any amount for it.
That said, I don't see them charging for that. The whole point is to market their upcoming games, they're not going to limit the reach of this advertising by making someone pay for the privilege of accessing it.

Exactly. The demos and movies will be free. If you watch the NoJ conference, Iwata says that the demo station will function exactly like the demo stations in retail stores. The only talk of pricing was with WiiWare titles.
DS demos and streaming game previews will not take up much space on the Wii, but how the hell is WiiWare going to work with the limited amount of storage the Wii has? I have to think that a future firmware update is going to allow saving straight to an SD card since Nintendo seems to be against a hard drive solution.
