I just got some hands-on with the Japanese version and it's a hell of a lot better than Tenkaichi 2. Oh man! Keep your eyes out for it because it's really good. They changed the controls where you have to take the cursor off the screen to do a super. Instead now you press one of the directional pads and a small little icon comes up in the bottom of the screen and tells you what to do so you don't have to keep looking at the menu to figure out how to do the super attacks.

Also during the story mode, the bystander characters keep mentioning what's going on in the fight. For example, when Tien is fighting Nappa, if you start to get the best of Nappa, Vegita starts to make fun of Nappa for losing to someone the level of Tien. It's great and makes for a much more lively and exciting experience!

Looks good in stills, although the backgrounds seem noticeably less detailed than the character models.

Everything is going WAY too fast for you to really take in the backgrounds, but yeah they're pretty sparse. I also haven't been able to give the wi-fi a chance but hopefully I'll get an opportunity later.

I loved Tenkaichi 2 and can't wait for this game.

Zen Davis: Have you encountered large amounts of slowdown while playing on certain stages? That's the one thing I didn't like about the Wii version.

Can you do things like play as Namek Saga Vegeta and transform or do you have to pre-select a Super-Saiyan dude?

My friend has a Japanese Wii. I played it at his place and then took my Adaptec Gamebridge over to his house to record the game footage.

I loved Tenkaichi 2 and can't wait for this game.

Zen Davis: Have you encountered large amounts of slowdown while playing on certain stages? That's the one thing I didn't like about the Wii version.

I haven't encountered any slowdown whatsoever. The controls have been changed from the last one where I'm not sure I understand how to keep smashing the opponent after you knock them away once. You can see this with 8:32 left in the video. I only knock Raditz away once but I have no clue how to follow up on it. I'm sure I'll figure it out in time. Generally, the consoles feel simplified. When you build up your energy, if you hold the up on the Wii-mote, you can do motion to execute your weak special attacks. If you hold left or right, you can do your 3 bar special move. If you hold down, you can do your full 5 bar special move.

The Playstation 2 version of Budokai Tenkaichi 3 received a 32 out of 40 from the game magazine Famitsu. The Wii version received a 33 out of 40.

Can you do things like play as Namek Saga Vegeta and transform or do you have to pre-select a Super-Saiyan dude?

I'm not sure. I didn't play it enough to find out.

Awesome, simply awesome. I loved this game, and I want to see if Kid Buu is still stupid-broken in this game, or if they did the right thing and toned him down.

No idea. I'm going to go over and try playing it some more and I'll let you know. The gameplay over is a hell of lot more easily accessible. The Wii motion controls for the supers feel spot on. Like the second you do the motiion, they execute. No more having the cursor waiting on the edge of the screen ready to do a super.

Uh, the US version of the last game let you use Japanese voices. The only difference was that they didn't use the Japanese music at all. I'm on the fence mainly because of that. Atari hasn't given ANY fucking English footage and I found the US music for the second game to be rather bland (the first game reused Budokai 3 music).

Also guys, here's a quick lesson. The first three Budokai titles were developed by Dimps and released in the US first. On the left is the US release with the US title while the right shows the Japanese release with the JP title.

Dragon Ball Z Budokai -> Dragon Ball Z
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 -> Dragon Ball Z 2
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 -> Dragon Ball Z 3

The PSP games stayed the same.

Now, the "Tenkiachi" games were developed by Spike and released in Japan first. Obviously, they're not the same games. Atari decided "Let's rename them by using the Budokai title just so people can keep buying them. If it has Budokai in it, they'll buy it." So, left is Japanese. Right is US.

Dragon Ball Z Sparking! -> Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi
Dragon Ball Z Sparking! NEO -> Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2
Dragon Ball Z Sparking! METEOR -> Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3

That's why the last three games in particular are free roamers, while the three before them were typical side-view fighters. Personally, the whole free roaming works far better considering that's how DBZ's fights worked out. When you look back at it now, Budokai 3 was great but was extremely limiting in how you could move about and fight. The third game of the Sparking! series so far looks fantastic.

Also, the fact that Arale from Dr. Slump is there (even though she did make a cameo appearance in an episode of Dragon Ball) is freakin' sweet. I am glad that the US version finally isn't making its own damned ugly ass cover while Europe gets the sweet looking Japanese cover. It's about time. Now Atari needs to make sure we get the Japanese music.

Also, since this time Japan got the Wii version before we did, we won't be expecting them to be getting any surprise additions that we won't be seeing like the last game (such as Piccolo Daimao, Cyborg Tao PaiPai or the Pilaf Robot appearing only in the European/Japanese versions).

It all boils down to whether or not the US version uses the Japanese music or not. If not, that'd be the only difference between the two versions.

I still like B3 over Tenkachi 1 and 2. Budokai 3 is my third favortie fighter game next to VF5 and DOA 3. In tenkachi I actually felt the controls were too complicated and i often found myself lost, not on target, and none of my specials hit my opponent.

It actually took me hours and hours of practice to learn the Wii game as well and I don't think it would have taken nearly as long if I had done it with a regular controller. A lot of people just don't have that kind of time though.

I couldn't use the Wii controls at all, but that may have been due to the fact that I was already too used to the PS2 controls. I took to the CC controls just fine, though. From what I've seen, the Remote/Nunchuck combo is fantastic if you've used it from the start.

Just call me Zen. I've only played it for 40 minutes but the story mode is 100% more satisfying. The special moves are much, much easier to pull off and for some reason the game sucks you in way more than BT2, probably because the learning curve has been lessened. The motion controls seem to play a smaller part but since the development team has had a year with them, they seem much more tighter.

Zen, does the game allow for more combos? If the directional pad is changed to super moves, then how do you block?
How are the super moves? I saw some of them and they just seem to go for the biggest flashiest stuff in an instant. Doesn't seem like you can even charge the kamehameha or other things. I saw the spirit bomb move in an instant without using the special move to prepare it. Thats disappointing for me.

Just played it last night for a few minutes. It looks and sounds great but PS3 and 360 owners might not like the looks much. Didn't have time to really test it out but it felt good. The classic controller gets some gettign use to but there was no way I was playing this with a wiimote.

Big bad so far is that the characters say ever option and give a little detail on it every single time you stop on. You know like if you stop on traing someone will speak up "Hey this were you train to get better at the game. I had to tell you this because you are to stupid to figure that out on your own. And because you are really stupid I'm going to repeat myself evertime you even look at that option." Ok not that bad but you get the idea.

Big Good. It feels like you are in the cartoon. I'm flying around sending out blasts and warping here there and everywhere. DBZ is one of my top animes and that is all I really wanted.

Just finish the first history mission where you fight Goku's brother. That bastard kicked my butt up and down the field so I went into training mode. The training mode is kind of odd in that it doesn't let you practice every move. Most of the time they will just tell you what to. I haven't done all the training lessons so maybe they just let you practice the harder stuff.

So after my training I go back to take on Goku's brother. He beats me down but this time I put up more of a fight. So I go back into training mode and do some bigtime training. It helps a lot. By this time I can pull off moves and do the warp dodge, the warp dash follow up, block stuff, and have a better feel for the game. I get beat down again but this time I almost kill the guy.

Then I just keep at him and notice a hole in his defense and take full advantage of it. I end up kicking his butt using all the signature moves from the show.

If you are having trouble with the guy don't fight him like this is street fighter game. Instead look at him and pick your moment to hit him with your big moves. Do that and he'll cry like a girl.

...Mainly because the game's so damn good but leaves you groaning in pain after leaving your arms sore. I love how the controls are much more like the series itself, but the aftermath has left my arms (mostly my right) sore. I blame the high speed clashes that require waving the remote and nunchuck up and down to get higher combos and knocking your opponent away.

All in all, the game is BAD ASS.

Just two questions:

1. Do you get to punch the shit out of people with Brolly or whoever that big badass dood is?
2. Do you get to get your ass kicked as that one robot chick?

EDIT: I only ask because I don't know who these big haired Japanese doods are, only that when I played DBZ:SSW2 for the DS, a pretty decent game, I immediately picked the biggest, most badass looking dood I could: Brolly. And deciding he needed a bitch on his arm, I stuck him with the robot chick and that became my team for the entire game. So I'd just be running through the game punching the hell outta people shouting "I'M BROLLY BITCH AND I GOT A BITCH WITH ME."

Good times.

yeah...the AI goes so fast and does all these moves that are impossible for us to do. and the thing about this game is that when the AI manages to get even one hit on you, an onslaught of even more hits come... and it's impossible to dodge because they hit you in teh stomach so hard that your paralyzed so vanashing attacks don't work.

DBZ3 = Tons of Cut Scenes in Campaign - a lot less battles; Online Play

From what I've played, it seems like the combos have been changed a lot from Ten. 2, especially the tripping combos. It felt like I had to learn how to play all over again. After about an hour in the story mode, and 2 hours in the training mode however, everything that the computer does is given to you.

Oh, and Kid Buu is still magnificently broken, even though they nerfed the knockback that his Mystic Combination does.
