I know it was posted in the 40gb PS3 thread over in the PS3 forum, but I felt that this deserved its own topic.
In the wake of the $399.99 PS3 announcement (the 40gb with no PS2 BC at all), Sony has announced that effective immediately (so I guess most retailers will drop it tomorrow), the 80gb bundle will now retail for 499.99. Which I guess isn't bad, considering you get a free game that's actually good (Motorstorm), but it's only partially BC, which sucks.

Expected this, but I didn't expect Motorstorm to still be a part of the bundle too.

I'd be willing to bet it gets "unbundled" once the current ones sell out.

I also expect motorstorm to be removed once the current batchs get sold.
But it is nice to see the 80gg with motorstorm drop to 499.
I thought the 40gig would still be able to play ps1 games?

It should. The PR only mentions that it doesn't play PS2 games.
The price drop was expected, as it was the logical thing to do.

It's nice to see a price drop, but it seems like Sony is still struggling to find the right SKU and price combinations for their system.

expect the 80GB to be $400 by March, the way things are going. I don't think this will have a huge effect on sales since the software is still better on 360 and the hype is still with Wii this holiday. It'd actually be a good move since MGS4 will be around then and people will actually have something to want a PS3 for.

Im all in once it gets to $350 with more software. Until then, thanks but no thanks. Sucks, because I really do want that Ratchet and Clank game and I also think Folklore looks really good. Oh well. I guess just wait for used copies, and by then the system will probably be cheaper. I wonder what a used system at Gamestop will be. What does a used PS3 cost at gamestop right now?
Is the PS3 like the 360 where Gamestop sells the HD seperately or do they have different used prices for diff. hard drive sizes?

So whats the deal with the 80gb model being only partial BC??? That was one of my strong factors in getting a PS3 , with all the good games i have just collectin dust , got rid of my PS2 about a year ago , havent played a PS2 game since the big black xbox came out!!!

I think the HDD stays with the system because it isn't the only difference. For example, the initial 20 gig PS3s don't have built in wireless internet capability.
I wonder if they bother to check what HDD is installed if you sell them a PS3.

Okay, I'm confused. I haven't really followed the PS3 too closely since its launch, so could someone please explain to me what the current SKU status is, and how the hell it got there?
Edit: This is your cue, Mana.

First there was the 20GB & 60GB models, last june Sony introduced the new 80 GB and dropped the price on the current models. Just recently they announced a new 40 GB for $400 with no BC whatsoever.
To sum it up:
20, 40 are the tard packages, avoid them unless you *REALLY* need a PS3 cheap (and at this point, no one does, even the Sony FBs), the 60 GB is a decent pick, as it's the only system to have full BC and the 80 is a-okay if you don't mind partial BC (think 360, only the 80 GB supports more games).
Kinda pissed I missed out on this 80GB drop, but then I remember that my 60GB actually cost me $23X.XX out of pocket  Granted, I would take back the purchase if I could.

The 20 GB is discontinued and rare to find at retail anymore while the 60 GB is also discontinued, but still common enough that there's no rush to get one just yet.

It's in stock at Gamestop right now. It's a shitty price, but available nonetheless.

20GB.
Seems to be because they're definitely not stocking those in store, so they have to find some avenue to sell them to a sucker. Looking at the in-store counter, none around me have any, nor are they expected to get any in.

Oh I know, I'm just saying that as of right now, whoever wants a 20GB can get one.

They're not making it easy on themselves if they really want to sell those things.

What the hell is wrong with the 20GB model? It's only missing wireless internet and a card reader. I personally rather have the EE than either of those, so the 20GB is superior to the 80GB IMO. Also the 60GB is not the only system to have full BC, the 20GB has that too. Anyone who thinks that the 20GB is a "tard package" is a total moron.

Just give me a white 40GB like the rest of the world is getting.
I'm actually more interested in how this price drop will affect the 60GB's price.
$450 sounds good, but I'm guessing it will stay at $500.
EDIT: Well, TRU Canada is selling the 60GB for $450. Maybe American stores will follow suit?

EDIT: Oops, wrong thread.
Anyway, I told everyone the 80GB was dropping to $500 sometime in October or Novemeber, and it looks like I was right. Awesome deal IMO.:D I might buy an 80GB myself, so I'll have two PS3 consoles.
If I had the money, I'd buy every PS3 SKU, like I've done with PSP and PS1 in the past (still need a slim PS2).

Tretton is a decent guy, but really bad at interviews (Kind of like me, lol). He has nothing to do with the reason PS2 BC was removed (It was up to SCEI and Sony Corp themselves). I think what Tretton meant was, with a cheaper PS3, this will now give those more money to buy PS3 games along with their PS3.
I hate it when people jump all over a mistake someone says, because not everyone is a perfect communicator. Now if MS were to say something dumb, everyone here would excuse it.
No one bother trying to own me, because I'm not going to bother reading replies in this thread.
Wrong thread.
Get a brain moran.

Well, it is Tretton's job to.. communicate.
Oh wait, he works for Sony. It's his job to persuade. And what he meant is that we believe PS3 software isn't selling because it's too easy to play cheap old PS2 games, so we'll remove that ability instead of focusing on getting 3rd party titles on time and selling a system people want.
MORANS
Mana and the SDF can close their eyes to opinions and blame bias all day but Sony just isn't getting things right this gen. Bottom line.

What a brilliant way to spend $1000 dollars.
Anyways, has nobody bought a used PS3 from Gamestop? Im interested to know if there will be 3 different price points on used systems. 20, 60 and 80 (I think those are the right numbers),
