I guess it doesn't matter anyways, I don't think the box set is all together in HD, it looks like you have to buy each seperately.

Bring on some Blu-ray KUBRICK his films are all worth owning just for the lessons in photography and use of music, finally some movies that DESERVE to be seen in HD repeatedly, no box set looks like you can get them individually if you don't care for them all

True, Strangelove is not a Warners movie. But they were able to get it in the Kubrick box they released a few years ago. And yes, it is a kick in the face to not release the box set on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

Eyes Wide Shut is in my top 5 favorite movies. So you're insane.

Well your opinion is your opinion... I just thought every single scene was double as long as it should have been... example...

Tom Cruise needs to talk to that black haired girl...

TC- "Hi"

Girl - "Hey"

TC"........I need to......."

Girl"........"

TC- "I really need to tell you something"

Girl" ok... should i sit down"

TC- "um... well, i guess.. well.....

Girl "......"

TC - "I just... it's really important"

Girl - "ok, what is it...."

TC "........."

you see where this is going... maybe you don't.

1. Fuck Yes, Getting this from Best Buy for $55 today unless someone spots a better deal. Probably will also buy Barry Lyndon.

2. Eyes Wide Shut is amazing.

3. I'm going to guess the 143 vs 119 different "cuts" are the same movie. I think the difference is that PAL conversion, rather than double every 24th frame (because TVs produce images at 25 frames a second, not 24) as in NTSC, they play it normally but then the movie plays roughly 4% faster. But maybe not, haven't read anything about it and didnt do the math.

3. Fuck yea.

I wouldn't call it an "amazing" film by any means. Interesting yes... amazing no.

Nope. The film was reedited to 119 for the UK. From what I remember a number of scenes were left out on the UK version including some a few major character building scenes.

yeah, the margin between PAL/NTSC release would be much smaller than 23 minutes.

i'm pretty torn... i might just get eyes wide shut solo because money's tight. doesn't help that the campus cd store is having a sale of used cds... this and days of heaven criterion... argh.

edit: yes, that's right, eyes wide shut is first priority. suck it. uncensored!

One controversy about this release is that three of the movies are cropped to 16x9, while they were filmed in 1.33:1. While it can be argued that he knew the movies were going to be cropped for the theater and thus had to film with the knowledge that the top and bottom of the image would be removed, it's still hazy. I think they should make both available, really. Image comparison from Eyes Wide Shut:

The new dvds also (as you can see in those pics) have much softer picture than the older ones, fortunately, so that makes it an easy decision for me - they're not worth buying imo.

It's just a shame that Barry Lyndon isn't being released with the other on HD; I've really been wanting to check that one out and was hoping it'd make the jump. The cover art is pretty lame considering how iconic some of the art is(see: FMJ).

OK, good to know with the UK cut of Shining and all that - seems pretty silly that it was cut so much. As far as widescreen goes, whatever. I have both, and am going to keep both. I understand that maybe he preferred full frame, but at the same time he did compose for widescreen and in many cases the compositions are tighter when wider. Not to mention the helicopter. Not sure about the color difference, just got the set a bit ago and won't have time to really take a look for a while. The one thing that upsets me about this set (so far) is the godawful packaging. The things Criterion could do with this set...

A) Uncut 16x9 version available for the first time in the US.
B) Actual extras.

The current 1.66:1 Letterbox DVD is still worth watching for Barry Lyndon. Its an absolutely beautifully shot film but I will warn you it is a bit slow paced. However the story is very good and well told once you get into it. Hopefully Warner will get it out on HD sooner rather than later.

I will agree I do hate most of the new cover art. I'm hoping that we'll see some fan made covers. I really hate the new one for "2001" and "Full Metal Jacket" in particular. The new ones for "The Shining" and "Clockwork Orange" are pretty nice looking. Especially the one for "The Shining." I like that FAR better than the previous DVD release's cover.

yeah, as stated, they were composed for widescreen, ... that's a deceptive picture but i can assure you the film is not "cropped" in any way. neither is the shining, neither is full metal jacket. if you prefer the 4:3 picture so be it... kubrick also had a great attention to keeping the actions within that frame because of home video... but it was filmed for theatrical projection. like most films are.

Huh? It IS cropped, they WERE filmed in 1.33:1. The Shining and Full Metal Jacket also were, the rest were filmed in widescreen. The 1.33:1 versions include the entire filmed picture, the widescreen ones cut off the top and bottom of the picture. Like I said, it can be argued that the scenes were all shot with the knowledge that they were going to be matted and thus there's no crucial information being lost, but those who are saying that the widescreen versions of these three movies have additional picture on the sides/aren't cropped are blatantly wrong. Not every movie was filmed in widescreen, believe it or not. And yeah, the uncensored thing with eyes wide shut does make it more appealing, it's just too bad they don't have a fullscreen version. If I actually had a widescreen TV I'd care less that I was losing the picture probably, but as it stands I'd rather have something that fills up my entire screen AND contains the entirety of what was filmed than something matted.

Oh, and go to DVD beaver if you don't believe me, they have a ton of comparison screenshots between the new edition and the previous fullframe one - the fullframe one does contain considerably more picture info, and does have sharper image, but also does have the "hooded figures" superimposed throughout the orgy and is technically lower resolution. Annoyinggggg. I haven't checked if they have comparisons of full metal jacket and the shining, but I'd assume they have some up.

EDIT: Here's the aspect ratio info from IMDB, cause you'll probably still claim I'm wrong:

Aspect ratio
1.66 : 1 (theatrical ratio, Europe)
1.85 : 1 (theatrical ratio, USA)
1.37 : 1 (negative ratio)

Sheesh. He framed for widescreen but shot in full frame for the simple reason that he preferred full frame for home video. In the theaters they were wide. And he was saying that back in the VHS/Laserdisc era, uninformed by recent developments in home video (like the DVD's impact). I find it funny you use DVDBeaver's review to prove your point, because they actually side with the new set's EWS transfer. Honestly, just look at the movies. The compositions are almost always much tighter when cropped, which in my opinion greatly contributes to the atmosphere in them.

I always wished they included an extended version of the documentary "A Life In Pictures"

I loved every bit of it, but they said they had to trim down a considerable amount of content and interviews we never got to see. I would think HD-DVD would be a perfect place to bring it back.

But this is where I get slightly hampered, did the new HD versions get realesed this week as well? Are they just in Blu-Ray or also hD? Alright Mr. Worst Poster....

The following have gotten new Special Edition treatment that were released this week:

2001: A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
Full Metal Jacket
Eyes Wide Shut

All five are available on DVD, HD-DVD, and Bluray.

Full Metal Jacket sports a new transfer. The overall image is MUCH more stable and film like compared to the original HD/Bluray release. Worth the upgrade just on the basis of that alone.... well, and there are extras on this one too.

Eyes Wide Shut is the uncut version complete with NO figures in the way of the "action" during the certain orgy scene.

2001 looks, sounds, and is just plain awesome on HD-DVD. That is the only title I've gotten my hands on thus far. Waiting for Warner to send out "The Shining" which might finally get here by this time next year perhaps.

Now go buy them.

Eyes Wide Shut is in my top 5 favorite movies. So you're insane.

It has some decent soft core porn scenes, but the chacacters were really superficial- there were points where tom cruise really looked like he had something else on his mind.

I did like nicole kidman in this, and all of the super hot chicks doing the soft core thing make this worth watching once. Yeah its only simulated sex and not anything hardcore, but the women in that look incredible, and I guess that is worth the price of admission.

I guess if i had a top 5 softcore porn movies, I would list this in my top 5, but i only ever watch shit like that if it is on skinemax and I am really really bored.

Thanks. Still, you didn't answer one of my questions of how can you differentiate the old HDDVD/Blu-Ray of Full Metal Jacket versus the one just recently released? Edit: I guess I can see where I wasn't specific enough, but what I meant was not in terms of content, but rather how can you tell the two versions apart? Do they have different cover art or something else?

I'm probably going to grab the boxset and hold out for B1G1 deals or some other deal on the HD transfers. With the regular DVD then I can let my friends watch it also while the HD glory will be just for me.:D

You can tell the two apart by the covers. The new one is the "deluxe" edition.

Old one:

The difference is the original one was mastered in 1080i and then "corrected" into being 1080p. With the new one they did a whole new master this time in 1080p. The new one also has some more extras on it.
