View Full Version : What's "wrong" with platinum/greatest/million sellers?

Hey, just started trading games not too long ago among various sites and I've noticed platinum hits, greatest hits, million sellers etc go for less or are regarded as lesser games, or listed specifically as "not ph/gh/etc" as it's a better thing. I'm just curious as to why it's an issue or not? I can see maybe to a collector's stand point, but don't most of these games play same/content also? If there's higher value, I'd love to know!
I like to think I had some cool factor in having a launch copy of Halo:CE, but I sold that just recently, I don't think that's worth much of anything more than a PH does it?
Serious questions, I'm trying to understand the VG trading business =)

People just don't like the boxes of those games with the red stripe or whatever else on it.

If all you want to do is play the game theres nothing wrong with them.
If you fancy yourself a 'collector' you would probably rather have the original version.

Or... if you don't like stupid looking boxes.:)
Seriously, they look really stupid. That's my issue. Why can't they just put some sort of a seal on the game like Nintendo used to do with their 'million sellers' or does with some GC games by putting on the 'Best Seller' labels on the games.

I'd say "Konami's Best" and the 360 Platinum Hits cases are the worst looking I've ever seen. They look like they were made for video store rentals or pre-order displays.

Yeah, the collectors usually like the original version, and they are worth more than the reprints. Its the same with people who collect things like comic books.

*Sometimes* the PC/GH/PH games come with added features that weren't included in the original versions. This is something that should be noted.

At least the Konami Best series' covers are reversible (or at least the Japanese PS2 ones are).
Besides the fact that GH games have the annoying color differences that stand out like a sore thumb in collections, keep in mind that some games may have altered/censored content in GH/later versions.
One prime example would be Zelda: Ocarina of Time on N64. The original LE Gold cart had red blood in the fight with Ganon, but it was changed to green blood in subsequent releases.

Such cases are extremely rare though.

from a collector's standpoint, it's just the idea that having an original would be worth more in the long run than having a reprinted "greatest hits/platinum hits/players choice"
and the box is ugly too :( I have to say, the xbox 360 platinum hit boxes are the ugliest looking box arts I've seen ever.

thanks guys for the replies, I understand now.. interesting note on Zelda:OoT. I always thought I remembered seeing red blood? mine isn't gold but it was a launch release copy.
Yea if you get OoT at launch it will have red blood.
As for value, if used people will probably pay a few more bucks for a non GH version. The real big money are going to be from something like sealed Kingdom Hearts black label.

Not only that, but they took out the chanting in the fire temple music, because somone complained it was too close to a Hindu or Buddhist ceremony, or something like that.

I always thought it mattered what save file you were on or something like that. AKA first file is red blood, 2nd is green or something, etc
I could be imagining it though, but I could have sworn I read/heard that somewhere.

Because they're fucking hideous.

I dislike greatest hits/player's choice/whatever because it hurts resale value. They're also invariably ugly, but that's relatively minor. Not only that, but they took out the chanting in the fire temple music, because somone complained it was too close to a Hindu or Buddhist ceremony, or something like that.Muslim, I think. Same thing happened in some crappy Xbox fighter (Kakuto Chojin or something).

There are several revisions of OoT, and while just about all of the gold carts have the red blood and Fire Temple chanting, very early gray carts also have both intact.
Looks like someone even made an article about this on GameFAQs. I'll quote a snippet or two:
V1.0. Version 1.0 has the original Red Blood, the Fire Temple Chant, and the
original Mirror Shield/Block design.
V1.1. Version 1.1 is exactly the same as V1.0 in terms of content; nothing was
changed between these two versions except for glitches.
V1.2. Version 1.2 has the Fire Temple Chant removed, along with the Red Blood
being changed to Green.
GCN. The GCN version is the same as V1.2 in terms of content, besides the fact
that the Mirror Shield/Block design has been changed.
*Note* This only applies to NTSC (North American) copies of the N64 cart. If
you have a PAL copy (Europe or Australia) then you have V1.2, as PAL is exactly
the same as NTSC V1.2.
The simplest way to determine what version you have is to look at the cart. On
the front sticker, at the bottom, in the center, is a two lined code. The
bottom line of this code differs between V1.0, V1.1 and V1.2. Here's what the
code is for each version.
V1.0: NUS-CZGE-USA
V1.1: NUS-CZLE-USA
V1.2: NUS-CZLE-USA (01)
So there you go.
Back on topic, about PH/GH/etc, I just prefer the original boxes, as it makes the shelves I keep them on look nice and uniform. I do own some GH games (not TOO picky, I'll buy it if it's all I can find), but they stick out and look terrible.
I'm just glad none of the companies chose colors like neon green and red (damnit, Playstation GH, you look so ugly). Too early to tell with the PS3 though.

Thanks Zingela! I just checked my OoT cart and I have the 1.1 version. Red blood and chanting, but with fixed glitches. A winner is me!

Nothing at all. It means a cheaper way to play the game for those that aren't overly anal.

I think that whoever green-lighted the Platnum hits cover design for the 360 should be smashed in the face with a shovel.

Remember dude, you're in Japan. :P You guys get virtually almost everything. We don't get the reversable covers.

I honestly don't care, as I rarely ever look at the packaging. However, a lot of people don't have anything to actually be concerned about, so they make up things to bitch about,.
