1) is the local anesthesia actually enough to take away all the pain that there is to the operation?
2) uh what exactly do they use to cut you open?
3) where do they cut?
4) how does it feel?
5) about how long is it?

I was knocked out for mine. Did they give you any anti-inflamatory pills to take the day before? It took about an hour for them to be taken out.

Are you just getting the local anesthetic?

1) Yes. It was for me. Those guys know their stuff.
2) No idea, I was passed out at the time. I assume something very sharp.
3) Your gums. Right past your last teeth.
4) It feels weird as hell. I woke up in the middle and could feel them digging around. No pain, just digging around.
5) My perception of time is shaky. Hour and a half I think.

The pain comes afterwards. You will be sore for a while.

Also, there have been other posts about this, I'm just too lazy to find them for you.

So to answer your questions... Yes there is a small chance at becoming pregnant, but that's only if the dentist is a real ahole, and yes you do lose I Q when your wisdom teeth are removed. And yes the tooth on a string trick has worked once in history, when a Bugs Bunny DDS decided he would try the revolutionary new treatment on a Mr. Daffy Duck

If I remember correctly, I was just numbed for mine. It wasn't that long ago, I just remember I had to gargle with salt water after the operation for several days and had some swelling, but nothing too inconvenient

Oh yeah, most oral surgeons usually do not use gloves, have bleeding sores on their hands, and have HIV. So goodluck with that.

I was knocked out for mine, and don't remember a good amount of time after I supposedly woke up. I was definitely in happy land, though. I never felt any pain, personally, but I did keep running my tongue over the gaps in my gums.

Technically, it is life threatening. Anytime you get knocked out with anesthetics it is possible that you won't wake up. That's why anesthesiologists are some of the most careful people out there. Of course remember, there is also a chance that after this operation you will never be able to move or feel anything involving your mouth.

I'm growing my 3rd wisdom teeth right now and it is a pain in the ass. I'm thinking about getting them knock off soon.

I was knocked out for mine, too. All I remember was them explaining what they were going to do, I blinked, and everyone disappeared. A nurse came by as I was trying to sit up, and helped me out to my mom's car. I think I slept most of that day. Make sure you have soft/liquid foods around. Broth, mashed potatoes, pudding... That sort of thing.

I'm getting all my info from hubby, so i'll give you what he tells me.

1: He got enough anasthesia to only feel pressure as they were pulled out, but his bottom teeth were sideways so they actually had to drill in and take them out in pieces. The cloth covering his eyes was slipping, and he saw pieces of skin "flying everywhere," so unless you're knocked out you might not want to see what they're doing. *L*

2: He doesnt now, he had his eyes covered. he only heard the drill.

3: Wherever they need to to get the teeth out.

4: Lots of pressure on the lower teeth, normal yanking on the uppers, but it may vary depending on how good or bad your teeth are.

5: Depends on how complicated it is for them to extract them. He didn't really take note of the time.

It's really afterward what you gotta worry about. They give you nice 'happy pills' to ease the pain, and you gotta change your gauze every now and then because it will get soaked in blood (tryring not to scare you, honest. ^^; ). You won't be hungry because of the pain of chewing, but if you do get hungry eat soft things like mashed potatoes and soup. After the pain is gone, usually there are holes left by the teeth, and they give you this weird syringe to spray water into the holes to get food particles out that leaves your breath foul if left to rot.

There is an ailment you gotta watch out for; called Dry Socket. It is the worst pain you can experienece, so says a friend of hubby's. He said, "I would not wish this pain on my worst enemy." How to prevent it is to simply follow the dentist's directions, and you should be pretty safe.

I hope this helped. :3

I must have had the best experience! I had all 4 taken out, 2 were imoacted. The day before I took anit-inflamitory pills. They knocked me out, took them out, and when I came too, I was in very little pain. I had no gauze, only stiches that dissolved after a week. I was eating normally the next day.

Ive gotten 4 wisdom teeth pulled out a couple of months ago.

1. I didn't feel any pain during the operation. Hopefully u wont either. I had to take anesthesia shots in the veins of my arms. But it wasnt too bad.
2. I was asleep. But as Tromack said "assume something very sharp."
3. They cut the gums behind the back of ur teeth.
4. After the operation, you will be sleeping for most of the day. The next day u will feel a bit numb.
5. My operation took around 2 hours.

The numbness went away in a week for me. But my lower left jaw still felt a bit funny. There was also something sharp where the wisdom teeth used to be but its nothing serious. My parents also told me that I called one of the nurses hot out loud when the operation was done. I remember a bit of that but im wondering if i said anything more..

As I mentioned there I have the benefit of having been born without wisdom. Whether that has hindered my capacity for making good decisions is another story.

I did have four extra teeth remove before they slapped on braces to straighten the remainig lot. They put me out with sodium pentathol, which is like being hit with a velvet-wrapped anvil. It knocks you down fast but not roughly. This was 27 years ago so things should be improved a bit for you.

i have another question: about how far deep does it go? (or does it depend)

enlightenedgamer

I had mine done earlier in the morning. I was knocked out. They did say, however, that my teeth were in good enough condition (almost good enough to leave them in) that I could have done it with local anesthetic. I didn't want to do that, based on my previous experience having other teeth removed.

I had my two top first bicuspids (right behind the canines/fangs) removed as part of overbite correction (my braces pushed everything back together and no gaps remain). This was done with a local anesthetic only. It's important to note that, although I felt nothing in my mouth, it was quite painful. The cutting away of my nearby gums caused no pain, but then he gripped the tooth with, essentially, a pair of pliers. He then rocked it back and forth for about 3 (very long) minutes to break down the roots and remove the tooth. This caused quite a bit of pain in my sinuses and, really, the rest of my head. It wasn't incredibly excruciating, but it definitely wasn't any fun.

As far as wisdom teeth go, I'm not sure how much root is present when they're still under the gums. If the operation is just slicing away tissue, you probably won't feel much at all (although I have felt that painless "digging" sensation that other posters mentioned during other procedures). If some tugging has to take place, you might be in for some pain.

Don't be too afraid to consider being asleep. I'm fairly certain that the risk of death from driving to the appointment is many times greater than from a general anesthetic.

One final note. Don't start playing games immediately after you get home. You'll most likely want to nap as the local starts to wear off. I have a somewhat vague memory of being in pain and stumbling through the Thunder Plateau in FFX trying to find a save point.

Good luck.

okay here is the thing.

I had mine removed during the spring. The procedure took 15 mins to remove all 4 wisdom teeth. The time might depend on the patient. I had a local anesthisia. With the local anethisia you feel no pain during the surgery and i mean no pain. You can hear the doctor talk to you but he has to speak loudly for you to hear him. With the local anesthisia you are not completely knocked out but you are to the pt where you feel nothing. They hooked up a heart mointor to me as a precaution, so you are always safe. The next day i was sore and my face was swollen from the stitches. As for cutting it depends on weather your teeth are fully out. I had two impacted teeth meaning they were not out fully so they had to cut the gum line, thus the stitches. Overall i had a good doctor and i healed good. The next visit they gave me this plastic device that you use to clean the sockets where your teeth were. You use it to clean the food out so it can heal faster. You will be fine.

The best part for me was that the doctor gave me Vicadin for the pain.
I didn't have much pain, but decided to try it anyway. Holy $%$#!!
I was seeing 3 of everything and couldn't move for an hour. Maybe I should have read the recommended dosage? I think I took three of 'em.

I only had one lower wisdom tooth removed. I was awake and didn't feel a thing. The doctor tricked me and said he was only poking around, when he was actually removing it. I didn't even fill the prescription for the painkillers. Having all four removed is probably a whole different experience, however ;)

im on vicadin right now for other teeth work im having done....i only take the correct dosage of one every 6 hrs...and it doesnt make me feel weird...though ive never been high to know what it feels like...all it does is make any existing pain go away....more then the correct dosage can supposedly kill you or something...anyways, the side effects scared me away from even thinking about doing anything besides what it said to do....

as for wisdom teeth...i need to get mine removed and the dentist isn't worried about them just yet, as he is doing other work right now...he said that it looks like a syst (however you spell it) is growing behind one of them, though it might be a shadow in the xray...he said it is normal and will go away when the teeth are pulled.... i talked to a few friends who said that they had systs there too (still dont know if its really a syst or not on mine), and that they went away afterwards.....as for pain, i dont care what they do to me as long as i dont feel a thing...but i guess thats all of us...the chances of you dying when being put to sleep are probably 1 in a billion...you may have a better chance of dying while sleeping normally....either way, whats so bad about going to sleep and not waking up....no pain, just an endless sleep...seems like a good way to go...probably better then most of us are gonna die

5) about how long is it?

I got mine out last year I think. It wasn't that bad. I felt good until I got home and didn't remember anything I said or did. I felt good though felt happy like I could run a 10k, lol. Then the drugs stopped working :(

Same for me as well, except they gave me 2 halcion to take, 1 the night before, and 1 in the morning before. I actually felt good enough to eat normally the same day, I had a cheeseburger and fries from a local diner about 4 or 5 hours after the operation. I also had no pain following the operation so I got to keep a free pill jar full of vicodin for future use!

i got all 4 taken out in one day. They didnt let me eat or drink anything after 10 PM the night before i think.

i went in sat down they gassed me up and i was out.

they cut all 4 out, i woke up and i was being put in a wheel chair.

then i was out again, and i woke up as i was being put in the car.

then i was out again, and woke up as we pulled into the driveway.

Then my gums were bleeding like crazy and i had to change the gauze(sp?) every minute or so.

i was only supposed to eat like mashed potatoes or soup for supper, but i ended up eating a hamburger for supper.

one of the things i hated was having to clean out the holes after eating.

My experience was like Cracka's. They gave me the gas mask and I don't remember anything after that.

I passed out a couple of times, and pretty much spent the next day or so in bed. I changed the gauze every few hours the day of the operation, but after that I didn't put any in. It hurt like a bitch to swallow, and to brush or even eat applesauce. After a week I was more or less back to normal, but even up to now I get food stuck where my wisdom teeth used to be.

3) where do they cut?back of your mouth.

4) how does it feel? it didn't really bother me until like a day later because the pain medicine didn't sit well with my stomach (if you get what i'm saying),so i didn't take the pain medicine anymore.

5) about how long is it? the sugery doesn't take too long, and afterwards it takes like a week to heal up for some people (myself cause i didn't use ice). i recommend using ice a whole lot because my sister didn't swell up nearly as bad as me and she used ice.

First off don't even worry about the operation it's highly overrated and its like nothing.

1) Make sure the surgeon hooks u up with laughing gas that stuff is great. the only part of the operation that will hurt is the needles from the anasthetic. This doesnt even really hurt with the laughing gas though it just feels like pressure on your gums. After this point you're pretty much set and you'll still feel stuff from here on out but it won't hurt
2) im not sure what they use to cut you open. i had no idea they cut me open i was so hopped up on laughing gas it didnt matter.
3)they cut the layer of skin on top of the teeth if you have skin there
4) it just feels kind of weird when they drill ur teeth and crack them open (i think thats what they did) the operation never hurts though
5) it only takes about 20 minutes to half an hour

the operation for me was the easiest part. its once u get home that it sucks cause the anasthetic makes it so you cant do ANYTHING with your mouth. i couldnt even take vicodin i had to mash it up and mix it in with water and drink it. dont worry about the operation though. id almost do it again just for the laughing gas that stuff owned!

It's been over 10 years so things may have changed but here's what I remember :

Not much pain during the procedure and not much pain afterwards, as long as I took my painkillers on time. My teeth weren't impacted so I was lucky there. It was weird to sorta' feel the dentist tugging at my teeth. The bleeding was kind of a hassle and it took a while for it to stop. Dealing with the gauze in your mouth to soak up the blood is a bit gross. I had the misfortune of seeing a RoundTablePizza commercial after I got home and had this overwhelming desire a pizza. Man was I hungry!

I brought a walkman and listened to industrial music during the procedure and that definitely helped. There were a few spots where I started to feel a bit of pain so I cranked the volume up louder and that seemed to take my mind off of it.

Good luck,

Brien

Just came back from operation, it was more loud than I thought it would be. I heard a lot of grinding, cracking, and stuff. The entire time it felt like they were trying to pull out one of my back teeth. The music I brought didn't help much but it did a little bit. The procedure was probably shorter than the time I had to wait for my mouth to become numb.

I've heard that painkillers work better at staving off pain than getting rid of it once the pain is already intense. So, taking them a little sooner might help. 'course I'm not a doctor so what the hell do I know? :-)

1) is the local anesthesia actually enough to take away all the pain that there is to the operation?

Yes, during the operation, you should feel nothing. For me, for a brief second, the cut somewhere or did something somewhere that wasnt numb, that hurt, but they numbed the area in only a few seconds.

2) uh what exactly do they use to cut you open?

Not really sure, but just a basic cutting tool to slice the gum, then they have to cut the tooth. On one of mine they had to cut it in 4 pieces and pull out each root seperately.

3) where do they cut?

On the side of the tool. The cut the gum to get access to the tooth roots.

4) how does it feel?

No problem during. Afterwards it hurts like hell. They gave me vicodine, which did absolutely nothing for the pain imo, though it did make me very tired.

For me, they first two days after, were just a lot of pain. No matter what I did, my mouth really hurt. On day three it stopped hurting unless I applied any pressure (i.e. closing my mouth and letting my teeth tough really hurt). But so long as I didnt move, they pain was less. On day 5 they pain had subsidded a lot. I still couldnt really chew, but there was less pain. Also at this time they started filling the wholes with some sort of medicated gauze which made me very confortable.

5) about how long is it?

About 45 minutes for them to remove my two lower ones. I have to get the uppers done next years since my dental plan coverage capped out.

"hey i have a question: you know how I'm not supposed to wear the gauze when I go to sleep? Like when I wake up, will my entire mouth be full of blood? Cause my left side is bleeding pretty bad right now"

Do not sleep with the gauze, or you could choke on it. After a couple of hours, the blood will clot. Once it clots be very careful not to break them open or it will be painful.

When I had mine taken out I was knocked the hell out. I had all 4 and an impacted moller (sp?) taken out.
They hooked me up to a heart monitor gave me an IV and gassed me. Not even 30 seconds later I was out. The time it took? I can't remember.
I woke up to nurses talking about Brad Pitt. (scary)
They shoved me in a chair for about 5 min while my fiance drove the car around to the back of the building and they shoved me out the back door.
I dripped spit and blood all the way to the pharmacy. Took the gause out about 45 min later.
Unfortunately the meds they gave me made me sick. I puked a little bit after I took them and had to wait a day for new meds. But I never felt any pain at all when I was without them so it didn't really matter. I don't even think I took any of the new meds.
They told me not to drink thru a straw for a few weeks and eat light foods like jello and aplesauce. So I had a whole bunch of jello in the fridge and I stayed in bed for a few days.
I went back to work the next week and first day I was back was having really bad earaches so I had to leave work. My doctor told me to go back to the surgeon who took my teeth out. The surgeon said I had dry sockets and gave me some stuff for them. He shoved some kinda of flavoured gause up in the sockets and it cleared right up. Tasted nasty too >.<. Like cinnamon and some bitter stuff. Then a few days later I had the stitches taken out.

the surgeon said that this is life threatening so he said i shouldn't do that
Youshouldn't worry about it. I had local and it's possible that you'll still feel the pain, but it's nothing excrutiating. I think I actually got less anesthesia than other people who've had local (They said they felt nothing, while mine still hurt). At most it'll make you wince. Cutting doesn't hurt, but it's when they pry the teeth out is where it hurts if they haven't erupted yet. If you're in SJ and ur doc is Timothy Hoang, then you'll be fine.

They put me on NO2 and I was completely retarded for the whole thing, the actual operation was like a drug trip... a legal one at that.

For a few days it will hurt, and you will live off of ice cream and other soft things, it's not too bad though.

The doctor uses some kind of mini spinning blade to slice the gums, it's very scary until you're completely gone, if they put you on drugs that is.

it was cake. they knocked me out.
it took no more than 30 minutes then the wheeled me into a car and i was on my way. my bro rove me to the tata shop had some work done, took the gauze out went shopping. I ran into the girl I was kinda seeing and she couldnt tell anything had happened to me.
no pain nothing, I was really nervous to eat so I had literally almost nothing to eat for three days.
dont know if it makes a difference but an oral surgeon did mine not a dentist.
