I had a "snowey phoenix" they called it, in Chinatown, NY. It was pretty much a Pina Colada, but it was good. My friends had some other ones, and they too looked good.

I work near U.C. Berkeley and there are a lot of Asians around and coincendently, there are a lot of shops that sell that Tapioca drink.
Some places make it better than others though.

Its funny you bring this up. I just came back from Chicago last weak where my wife and I had these in chicago. My wife went crazy over them, she loved the boba things. Since you can get them over in the china town by us, were gunna head over there soon and try them there as well.

I drink the taro one, I believe its pictured on the left in the OP.
In fact, me and Mrs. CheapyD get them so often, we don't even after order when we go to the tea place, we just say, "the usual, please".

I hate tapioca, so I wasn't such a fan of bubble tea.

There's a place called Fat Straws here in Dallas that selld it. I had it once, Mango something-or-other I think. It was weird but good.
One of my Indian friends was with us when we went and he wanted to know what Tapioca was. None of us knew, so he googled it. Turns out it's made from some sort of poisonous root or something, but can be extracted safely in some way.

The word boba is a slang word in Chinese to mean big nipple. Just thought I'll share that tibbit of info... :D

You shouldn't be going to Canada for the bubble tea, you should be going there for the Beer!
For Bubble Tea in Philly, there's the Bubble House on Sansom in the UPenn city of town, I've been meaning to make it there, but haven't gotten around to it quite yet.

There's also a bubble tea place on Route 1 (well pretty far down, by Edison) that a friend of a friend owns called Fusion Ti. They just opened a new one near my house as well. I love the Cookies and Cream flavor.
Some places make it better than others though.
Yeah, it makes a big difference if they're marketing it to other asians or not. Some places make it so sweet that it's almost like a creamy/chocolate malt, instead of tasting like milk tea (which is what it really is.) The roadside carts which sell assorted cheap eats in Philadelphia (UPenn area) sell them, but tend to make them pretty sweet. ...although...reading all this makes me want one with lunch..

Interesting that this is making inroads here in the US...as I remember several years ago, there was this Canadian company that was marketing a similar drink in the US called Orbit I believe. It was a clear beverage (I can't recall if it was carbonated or not) and it was full of small colored balls which I believe were tapioca. The beverage part was ok, but to be honest, the moment I feel something in my drink slip through my lips that ISN'T ice - my gag reflex just begs to kick in. *shudders*
