View Full Version : Most annoying multiplayer/CPU exploit?

Ever been playing at the arcade and been stuck in a corner against a button masher? Played against the CPU and it kept "cheating"? The losses are boring and the wins don't give any sense of accomplishment.
Lately I've been playing Mario Strikers (GC) against a friend and the only way he scores points is by using a weapon followed by a Super Strike. That means I either have to do the same to keep up or lose regularly. It's really boring and he thinks I'm only pissed just because I keep losing. Then again he's always been big on using exploits (wrestling games especially) and calling it "wit".
Another time I was really pissed when playing multiplayer in Perfect Dark. One of the sims kept running immediately for the cloaking device and then a rocket launcher.

- Don't give him items (mostly by not tackling excessively)
- Wiggle the c-stick to throw off his super strike meter
I also find that the slide (B) is more useful than the tackle in general. If he's doing a ground pass, you can often do a A-->B thing (switch to the person closest to the ball and slide steal). If he's doing a lob pass, it often takes long enough for you to catch up to the receiver and take the ball back.

the main CPU inbalance I've noticed in any game is EA's Madden football series. I tote myself to be a decent madden player, I'm able to play on all madden and win with quite big differences in the scores. But what i've noticed over the years is that you'll do really good for a 4 or 5 games in a row, then all of a sudden the computer will get tired of losing and go into a "kick ass" mode and just run rampant over you and their defense will be impenetrable.
that's really the only problem I've had with CPU in any game.

See I know the trick to not hitting anyone without the ball so as not to give him weapons but my teammates still do anyways.

Madden sometimes frustrates me with the multiplayer exploits.
06-high pass
07-quick pass, fb dive
08-yet to be seen, possibly the screen pass
Then there's the highlight stick, which completely devalues stick skill, but I digress.
Madden has always had the catch-up AI as well.

Back when I used to play Killzone online there was an annoying thing where people put a dot on the middle of their TV and just used the sniper rifle to 1 hit kill everyone without having to use the scope or anything.
Devs fixed that with a patch though.

A round of applause for the HWG that used to throw MIRV (cluster bomb) grenades into my team's spawn room in the "Flag Run" level of Team Fortress Classic! These applause also apply to soldiers with the nail grenade thing, or spies with their crazy hallucination bullshit (though that's really just a couple points of health). Guys - there's a sentry gun and locking blast doors there for a fucking reason: to keep you from throwing god damn MIRVs in there!
Not quite as applicable since I'm the main (though I'm not too happy about it) offender: red shells in Mario Kart battle mode bug me. I'm good at dodging them, but using a homing attack in a deathmatch like that still doesn't feel right. My brother and I used to have a rule that you could only fire them into walls (or backwards in Double Dash) for 1v1s, but we would allow them in bigger fights. Less skilled competitors claimed this was too confusing, so we did away with that rule. They now bitch every time I get triple red.

NBA Jam (arcade) comes to mind. Get a good lead, and suddenly the CPU can make full court three pointers, steal the ball, etc. to take the lead back in the final seconds.

In GunZ, "Korean-Style" (also commonly known as K-Style) is a style of play based on cancellation sequences and gameplay glitches, and is a form of emergent gameplay. Like in several fighting games such as Street Fighter, canceling certain character animations or doing two actions at the same time in a sequence can create complex combo moves. Mastering these moves require days, weeks, or even months of practice, as the player's fingers have to be quick enough to time the slashes and blocks required to perform the moves. However, because it's based on several programming oversights, people using Korean-Style were often considered to be cheating, but now the style is generally accepted, as the GunZ 2005 trailer features Korean players actively using K-Style teachniques such as the Butterfly, Half-Step, Slash-Shot, Flash Step, and also the Light Step.[7] The name "Korean-Style" was named after the player "Korean" [citation needed]. "K-Stylers" must use swords or kodachis, because although the dagger can also be used to cancel certain character animations, these weapons can cancel a slash animation by beginning the animation to switch their weapon, which is the basis of many cancellation techniques. Another reason as to why daggers cannot be used for "K-Style" is its inability to block, resulting in the player being unable to cancel a slash or "uppercut" animation, for certain "K-Style" techniques such as the Butterfly, which involves jumping, dashing, slashing, and canceling the slash animation with a block, and also the insta-fall, which involves cancelling the animation of an uppercut using a block and quickly jumping and slashing an opponent in mid-air to send them back to the ground.
Players playing without using Korean-Style are said to be using "European-Style" (E-Style), named as a parody of K-Style, which is a style in which the player does not use canceling and only uses the core techniques for movement, and plays similarly to a normal first-person shooter game. A player who uses canceling but does not use a sword is said to be using "Dagger-Style" (D-Style). Korean-Style, however, is the most popular fighting style in GunZ, either in full or in the use of certain moves because it creates a quicker pace for the game. Although an experienced European-Styler can compete with a Korean-Styler, they may often avoid confrontation and lengthen the game in order to win. Daggers are lightweight in comparison to swords or kodachis and allow a player to dash often with more ease. However, the dagger cannot be used to block, and cannot cancel a stab animation by switching to another weapon, limiting its usefulness in comparison to using a sword.

In Star Wars Battlefront online multiplayer, many maps have "glitches" that allow players to get inside terrain and shoot through walls at opponents, but cannot themselves be hit. They can only be killed if you know how to get inside the glitch, which isn't always easy, particularly when you're being shot at by an essentially invincible enemy.
