View Full Version : The Orange Box is NOT the best videogame deal ever!

First, I'm not counting CAG deals, I'm only talking about the original price point of games...like MSRP. Not like that time when I scored Chrono Trigger for $3. :)

Everyone's been saying that the Orange Box is the "best videogame deal ever," but weren't the 2K5 games- all at the price point of $20- an even better deal? To me they were, for four- NHL, NFL, NBA, College Hoops- were by far the best games in their sport on the market and MLB 2K5 was a close second to MVP Baseball 2005, alas $30 less.

I picked up all of them right after they released, and spent countless hours playing them each. I'm still playing NFL. :D

Anyone else agree?

By this kind of logic, the best deal ever is....

http://www.storeshop.com/images/protwohundred.jpg

THERE ARE OVER 50,000 EXCITING WAYS TO PLAY!!!! AND FOR ONLY $19.95 + S&H.

If you can find a better deal, then you're a damn liar.

I disagree. Orange Box owns.

Yeah, those $20 2K were good but the Orange Box is a better deal: 5 games for $60 is only $12 a game!:D

Those sports games would cost you 80 dollars for all four of them. Besides, the sole fact that they're sports games makes them an awful value in the first place.

OP is wrong. The Orange Box is the best game deal ever. People are saying that they would gladly pay $60 for TF2 or Portal as stand-alone games. I also feel that this is the best deal for me, since I was able to jump on that $9.98 pre-order deal that Amazon had going on.

Best videogame deal ever was Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES IMO. Four amazing Mario games which recieved graphical upgrades and save upgrades, plus you got "The Lost Levels" all on one cartridge. Throw in the fact that there was a version that included Super Mario World and you have a hell of a deal.

Even if Portal cost $100, it would be a better deal than that.

Yes, in a second. I'd spend more time playing NFL 2K5 alone than the Orange Box altogether.

IGN Scores:

Orange Box: 9.5

NFL 2K5: 9.4
NHL 2K5: 9.2
College Hoops 2K5: 8.8
MLB 2K5: 8.5
NBA 2K5: 8.1

That's just sick, for $20 each, and IGN underrated NBA 2K5.

i thought NFL 2k5 was a great deal since it was far superior to madden 05,
but the Orange Box IS the best value in gaming history
not only are you getting 5 games, but 5 AAA games like somebody said above
Half Life 2 series is probably one of the greatest FPS i can think of,
portal a very unique puzler, and TF2 which has amazingly good, balanced gameplay that can get a bit addictive :P

anyways, hardly anything comes close to the value you are getting with the orange box

One thing people forget is that the orange box is available on pc for 45 with the pre order that valve did (on steam). 45 dollars for all those games is easily the best deal we have seen yet. On top of this with steam you can gift all the games you own. Either sharing a great game or maybe selling your epidoes or hl2 you already own (I did this with my EP1). TFC2 also has limitless potential after you finish the single player.

The Orange Box is a great deal, especially for those of us who have not played any of Half Life 2. I am enjoying the game, more than Halo 3. I love Halo 3, but the campaign seemed so short and multiplier is the best part of it. The first Halo seemed so epic in nature. Maybe thatīs why Iīve been a little underwhelmed by H3.

The closest things I can think of for "better deal than Orange Box" are the Zelda compilation (first 4 console Zeldas for $20) and Mario All-Stars (though for all I know, that was a billion smajillion dollars, so that's up in the air). I'm-a still go with Orange Box over Zelda CE, though.

Actually, $60 for the Orange Box isn't totally accurate for us all. I only paid $45 for it on Steam by preordering a couple weeks before it came out. $45 for 5 fanfucktastic games? I think that is the greatest deal in the history of mankind... even the Louisiana Purchase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_Purchase) does not compare.

I personally think that the Sega Gennesis collection for the PS2 is one of the best deals in gaming history.. plenty of great gaming on that disc for all different kinds of tastes (not just basically 3 half life 2 games and 2 multiplayer ones)

I also like the first 2 midway treasures discs.. they have provided me with much enjoyment.. hmm..

but the zelda colector's edition for the game cube (with zelda zelda 2, ocarina of time, majora's mask) thats 4 AAA titles.. mario all stars has already been mentioned hmm. . some of the PS1 FF anthology and collection each have 2 games worth picking up for 30 ..

although I don't think it is the "best deal ever".. on 360 you can't get a better deal than that though.. the only 2 games I think that are in the same ballpark for price<value.. is Oblvion game of the year (sole purpose because it is so damn big and can take you forever) and halo 3 (i assume its king of multiplayer..) but i love half life 2 on the original xbox and i assume its just as good on the 360

you know... I thought the same thing, but not for the same reason as you. I mean, basically you're getting 3 tech demos, and I kinda feel that they might not be as "finished" as they could be. The $20 MSRP of the 2K games (especially the NFL one) is in the same league, I'd agree. Gotta also consider NFL 2K5 (or whatever year it first sold for $20) was a fresh game (in so far as a football game is ever fresh) whereas some of the titles compiled in Orange Box (or maybe all of them?) have been out for a while.

Got some other good values mentioned in this thread, too. Although any game that was included as part of a console bundle is iffy to call free.

I also received Episode 1 for PC the first time. After several phone calls to Amazon, they finally let me return that one, and get the 360 version of TOB for the same pre-order price that they had listed originally. I think only a handful of CAGs were able to get in on that deal.

People seem to be being cruel here to the OP. Really, what's scary here I think is how few really good MSRP deals there have been in time. I'm also somewhat surprised that no one brougth up the MegaMan Collection that was $30 originally. Maybe Morrowind GOTY that retailed on the Xbox for $30 out of the gate (easily get 200+ hours out of it if you wanted to).

But, in reality, there really aren't that many great deals out of the gate.

I never did play blue shift... :-kDon't bother. Opposing Force compensated for its relative shortness by adding new - and awesome - weapons (iguana grenade launcher, barnacle gun, SAW, etc.), more squad combat (with an actual squad this time), and new enemies (male Black Ops, mutated mawmen, etc.). Blue Shift compensates for being shorter than the original Half-Life by... being pretty much the same thing, only with fewer weapons and one new guard character.

Fuck those Voltigore pricks, though. Fuckers can kill you in one hit. The only gun that can reliably take those pricks down only has about five shots to it. By the end of that god damn area, I was sneaking around laying satchels to try and blow them up.

2K sports games are really, really deep. The franchises are pretty much RPGs wrapped inside of a sports game. My friends and I actually used to bring our memory cards over each others' houses so we could play our franchise teams against one another. :D

in that case so is All Pro Football...

Yeah, except that 2K5 actually had an NFL license and a franchise mode. Newer sports games aren't necessarily better than the previous year's edition- just look at NBA Live 06 compared to 07.

Actually, MVP 2005 was $30 that year (so $10 less) and FAR superior to MLB 2K5. MLB 2K5 was complete trash... I spent $10 on it and feel ripped off.

It wasn't trash, not by a long shot- though MVP was definitely better. I got the game about a year after it came out, though, so I forgot the original price point. Back in the day I was an All-Star Baseball fan. :D

Close the thread. We have R winnar.

Weren't SNES games ridiculously expensive back in the day? In comparison to the 2K5 games, for me, it's not a better deal, but it was probably the best deal for ten years running.

BTW, I have it, and it's awesome.

Technically. 2k5 series is still the better deal. All of those games, new, can still be had for under $40.00. And that is the truth!

You're confusing price with value. I'd let you give me noggin for free, that doesn't make it the best deal... well, for you.

Those were just sport game and you only got one in each package. Orange Box includes 5 game which if you buy them seperatly add up to $130.
