I was just digging through some old magazines here, and found EGM's list from August 2006 of the Top 50 Coolest Games" coming out in the "future." How well do you think they faired guessing what the biggest hits and success would be?

Which games do you think are missing, and which were grossly overrated or underrated in their preview?

It's important to note that they were looking for "original games" not "sequels and licensed crap."

Honestly for original titles, pretty good. It's not spot on, but I wouldn't expect it to be. The #1 slot I'd very much disagree with, I'd give it to Assassin's Creed. I'm trying to think what it may be missing. Hard to say since it's August last year and I don't remember what was announced by that time.

Whatever happened to Huxley?

Still in development. They recently announced Kevin Riepl (who did the Gears of War soundtrack) would be doing the music for Huxley. They started a closed beta in September as well.

well, the #1 spot was an intro to a feature about Army of Two. Obviously they had an exclusive and decided to make it stand out with another feature

it was by no means the #1 game on that list, but it was something brand new that EGM was gonna discuss in the same magazine

Ya, Army of 2 was the cover story, and it led right into it.

I asumed it was some kinda ranked list.

It was, hence the 50-1...

although Brooktown High: Senior Year as number 14 completely destroys any credibility the rankings have

I dunno how you can rank games that havent come out yet, whats the critieria? Most hype? Prettiest screenshots? Thats pretty much a list of 50 games that seem interesting.

Forget "seem interesting" - that's a list of the only 50 new games they could think of.

16) Liar (PS3)

Did DS Air ever come out in the States? It's been out for a year or so here in Japan and I've been considering picking it up.

Oh, and nice mispelling of "Lair".

What you see in this thread is just a list of games. What you don't see that was in the actual article was screenshots and a blurb of info about the games. No need to badmouth EGM based on 2nd hand paraphrased info :P

Are you sure they didn't mix this up with "top 50 ways to be a total nerd" list?

Seriously, though, good list... I remember reading that way back and being considerably more pumped for Army of Two than before reading it.

99 Nights (35)ranked pretty high on that list considering how it turned out. I'd rank Hotel Dusk (39) higher than that if only based on the art style. It was far prettier than a lot of those other games.

Stranglehold (18) is way too high on that list.

I'm still trying to figure out what Alan Wake (17) is, I mean I saw it at E3 two shows ago (2006), but all they had was the environment, no action, no characters, nothing. I guess it's supposed to be the next Silent Hill, but I couldn't tell you a thing about it. Mind you that this was written a month after I saw it at E3, so I doubt they knew that much more than me. Mind you they could, but I somehow doubt it.

Oh, and Saints Row? (10)Pshaw.

Eh. Just looks totally random to me. I'm sure they used a ten page essay and user-poll to determine that yes, Bully is in fact cooler than Dead Rising, but it still just seems like a randomly organized list of new games.

It's one of my top 3 most anticipated games, that's what. Seriously... this game has so much potential, I just hope it doesn't dissapoint me.

What I like about this list is the presence of "Unnamed Naughty Dog Game". Those of you who have read the EGM issue, how much was known about the game at the time?

A good deal actually, just not the title

Eh, every list ever is going to have something arguable about it. It's why magazines and sites do them so often; just an easy way to get your attention.
