Anyway, it's dark. That means it's Castlevania time. I'm thinking I'll play more SOTN and maybe switch over to Rondo remake later. I'm also writing the review now while drinking red wine, which actually is the only way you can review a Castlevania with any class.

Re: Phoenix Wright, I'm expecting a lot of the DS-specific features to show up in AA4, much like they hinted at with the bonus chapter of PW1. If that's all that's different, outside of characters and story, I'd be happy with it.

My gaming is about to get pretty chaotic as I'm currently moving between Zack & Wiki, PW3, and GH3. Luckily I've decided to get Battalion Wars from Blockbuster, so it won't be in my hands till closer to the end of the week, gives me some time to hopefully get through Z&W. If I could do that, I'd have a whole week or so to get my fill of BWii before Galaxy hits.

Seriously, I'd like to see a level based game more than anything. There's been what... 5 2D Metroidvania's since SOTN? None of them have been as good as SOTN. DoS came close. Nothing else did. Sure, they were great, but clearly, if they haven't recaptured the glory of SOTN by now, they aren't going to.

A new Rondo that's just longer would be perfect.

Either way, I'm just glad Dracula X Chronicles exists.

I popped in Odin Sphere and Soul Nomad yesterday/today just to check out the discs since they were bought used. Impressed with the visuals on OS, game seems fun early. Not impressed with the visuals on SN (didn't expect to be), but the gameplay definitely delivers an Ogre Battle vibe.

Had three rounds of Starcraft last night. Me (Toss) and suko_32 (random) against jarvis307 (Zerg) and his brother (Protoss). It was a rematch of a game we had a couple of months ago, wherein the two brothers dominated the macro game (producing far more troops and managing their economy far better than us), but lost on the micro. Jarvis marched most of his Zerg through a narrow channel over to Suko, and got the shit Psi Stormed out of him. Jarvis' brother Mike supported him, but his main contribution was a fleet of Carriers - Carriers which I froze using Stasis Field, then obliterated with Psi Storm.

Rematch round one: We're all rusty as fuck. We're also all playing the exact same map. I'm even in the same spot. I went for Corsairs (weak Protoss air superiority unit), and sent them off in the direction of Jarvis. I began hunting his Overlords (necessary to build units/spot invisible enemies/transport troops over cliffs and water). Watching the replay, I found out that he went into heavy Overlord production while his Spire (needed to make his beloved Mutalisks) was being built. Good thing he did keep making Ovies, because they were dying as fast as they were coming in. His Spire eventually popped up, and six Mutalisks appeared to fight my three Corsairs. I took off, leading his Mutalisks away while my army of Zealots (ultratough swordsmen) and Dragoons (not quite as ultratough mechanized infantry) closed in on his base. My ally's Hydralisks and Zerglings came in to reinforce just moments before the enemy Protoss' Zealot army showed up. The ensuing battle was totally awesome - trust me. I was forced to retreat, but quickly returned with more Dragoons and killed Jarvis. My ally and I rebuilt (shouldn't have - we had more troops than our enemy at this point), regrouped, and plowed our way through a shit-ton of Dragoons, High Templar (uber spellcasters), and Archons (meat shields). Good game.

Rematch 2: We knew Jarvis and Mike were gonna rush us. We just didn't know how hard. I teched hard to Dark Templar (invisible swordsmen), but they showed up JUST before I could get them out. There was no choke point on that god damn map, so they ran over me. Ouch.

Rematch 3: I vowed I'd pick a different map. One with a choke point. Shoulda researched the maps first, as my base was wide fucking open. Got rushed again. Blech.

We will have our revenge.

Just got done playing through Victorious Boxers Revolution... It was entertaining, I need to play it with some friends before I throw my final judgement at it... But I really enjoyed the story mode.

I'm gonna sit down and study up a bit more of The Eye of Judgment later tonight. I bought some theme decks/boosters and will try to get into it. Fortunately I also have another friend into it, so it won't be too bad. :)

I really should be playing some Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection though... Wanna be sharp for when Tekken 6 comes out. :)

Ive been itching to play some Katamari lately, but I dont want to buy it for the 360. Something about releasing DLC two weeks in a row just after the game has released rubs me the wrong way.

The game came out with half the levels of the PS2 versions, and now they're trying to sell you what shoulda been there in the first place.

3D on handheld sucks in general IMO. I don't play a handheld system to play something like God of War (or even Zelda).

I play handhelds for things like Puzzle Quest, Super Mario Advance, Yoshi's Island 2. More pick up and play stuff.

I migrated around from PGR4 to Halo 3 legendary to beginning a Gnome Run on HL2: Episode 2 to finishing with Ninja Gaiden Black and getting incredibly pissed that my old save data from my old hard drive was corrupted, then getting even more super pissed at the second stage's boss.

Ex; when I go to take a crap, I go for my DS, and I can get some 5-20 quality game time out of it. With PSP, I'm usually done by the time the title screen plays, and that's if I load a game from the Mem stick.

Although, even a DS fan(boy) such as myself can see that PSP has the better holiday lineup ;)

I have to disagree; you stated that in 5 Metroidvanias after SOTN and none of them have captured the greatness of it.

My GOTY is still Metroid Prime 3 though just because it is actually a new gmae rather than a compilation, and it's damn good.

I had a blast playing TF2 this weekend.

I went invulnerable with the medic 5 times in a row and took all three capture points in gravel pit easily. Then we turned around and stop the other team from getting a single capture point.

In another game yesterday I was killing as the demoman. I love peppering an area with sticky mines so that I blow up a medic/heavy combo as soon as they come out of uber mode.

I played a little of the Crysis demo but I'm going to have to restart because I find any ammo. That game is pretty hard without ammo.

Last night I almost played Jeanne Darc again before falling asleep.

I played some Ninja Gaiden Black last night. I'm now on Act 4. I thought it was amazing in Act 1 and it just keeps getting better. The jump, grab guys neck, throw is one of the best video game moves ever created.

I wonder if I'll ever catch-up gen wise. I mean I've played Gears and some more recent stuff but there is still a bunch of last gen stuff I need to play. I need more time! One good thing is I've tried the demos to some of the cheap 360 games at K-Mart in order to be smart about what I'll keep.

Finally finished Ouedan 2 to my liking. Stopped playing when I was at the last song on hard difficulty and picked it up again a week ago when my friend was over and played it some. Went on to beat hard, unlock insane, and finish insane difficulty. That last song (or two I guess) are total bitches. My fingers are now bust but I'm finally satisfied I pretty much fully beat it minus the last title or two.

Zack & Wiki should arrive soon, so I'll probably start that up and give it a whirl.

I’ve had a smorgasbord of gaming this weekend.


I played quite a bit of Phantom Hourglass. I’m on the Ocean King temple for the third time. I’m still really in love with that game.


Played a little bit more of Ratchet and it remains my favorite PS3 game.


Yesterday I finally got the Marathon Man achievement in Halo with a friend on co-op. We also got the last two silver skulls I needed to get my Hayabusa suit. Good stuff. Now I need to go through with scoring and get the last lone wolves achievements.


I played A LOT of Guitar Hero III. The Les Paul pwns all! That thing is amazing. Absolutely, phenomenal quality. Unfortunately I still suck, but between the wider note hit range and the Les Paul I might actually ascend into hard this time.


I had a nightcap last night of a little PGR4. I’m a sucker for racing games and that game is a good way for me to unwind.

Gamefly is tempting, but it's just nice owning stuff.I'm the same way too. I tend to not play many games I buy until a week or two after I buy them anyway. Also, I rarely know when I'll have time to play games, so when I at least own them, I can play them whenever I want. Gamefly seems like too much of a hassle for me anyway.

My fucking internet at my apartment sucks ass and it keeps me from playing online games on weekday nights (due to going lower than 200kbps). I really wish I got my Dad into investing in Insight BB instead (Lol, there's no way I'm paying for my internet right now) since my internet might have been more stable that way. I tried to play Calling All Cars, but kept getting disconnected due to speed (had problems on PSN and XBL because of the speed too. On the 360, my buddy list will hang due to speed).

No clue how long it took me, I don't think it has a time counter, but the game was so good I didn't really keep track. I'd guess maybe 10 hours, maybe an hour or two more. Every minute was awesome though.

Yes, you can continue with your weapons and you do get different types of armor similar to UYA.

Still unsure about the simpsons game. I wants it, but I don't want to pay. Been playing some oldies on the PSP.. Monopoly on Genesis, Sparkster, Secret of Evermore, Bionic Commando.

I got a $5 copy of second sight yesterday on a whim and it's a pretty fun game. Too easy and such but it actually does some good things story wise, and I always liked the way Free Radical (timesplitters) did character animation. Also has a useful cover/shooting mechanic.

Also how much do you think Sony paid EA to get the Sony versions of the simpsons games mentioned exclusively on the TV and web advertising? Every simpsons game ad is followed by the PS3 logo and only shows the PSP, PS2, and PS3 versions in the ad. How laughable. They must have footed the bill for the advertising. I bet the 360 version still outsells the PS3 one by at least 3:1. I guess it's smart for EA, they know that the 360 version will sell, and they might as well get free advertising.

The outro logo is different, and we know that Microsoft has long been helping pay for the advertising/marketing side of things for a lot of 3rd parties, in return getting their 2 second "Jump In" tag added at the end.

Last night I played Portal. Got really frustrated on the later puzzles, because I knew the solution but I couldn't execute them (stupid 3D platform jumping). :p

Really? I actually liked the first one. I really like stealth games and to me it really felt like you make the wrong move and get seen 90% chance it's game over. Plus using the hook to rip a dudes nuts off was classic. :lol: Manhunt 2 is at 83% at game rankings so far, with only two reviews though. I may get it but probably not for $50 though.

Either way I wouldn't be surprised. It's a solid 7.5 to 8.0. The story is awesome, the graphics are great, and the multi-character team aspect keeps the game fresh at all times.

It's not flawless, with some fairly mediocre AI and no multi-player, but as a Gamefly rental, I couldn't be more satisfied. Lovin this game right now.

well, the antialiasing in the graphics is better, and the 360 version is based on revision C whereas the PS3 version is based on Revision B. Meaning there's a buncha minor gameplay tweaks. I think there's more skimpy outfits for the bitch (read: female) characters as well.

Ive tried to watch Naruto and I just cant. The only problem I have with the show is Narutos english voice. The show looks cool except for him. But with that voice I just cant get into it.

Good ending, too. Your review was almost all negatives but still the game got a 4/10? Would you honestly recommend anybody play this game? Why not go for the 1 or 2?

Also could be a bit shorter and I always like to see a little more personal tone in reviews. It's easy to fall into that listing of features like it's a grocery item, which you avoided for the most part, but what does playing this game feel like. I've only played the first coded arms, but I can say that aiming with the face buttons feels like trying to use a sledgehammer to hit a baseball. Clumsy, innacurate, and not made for the task at hand.

UMK3 is great, but I couldn't full off my moves. With a console having a good D-pad, I can pull off my moves in Guilty Gear X2 around 95% of the time (The Saturn had the best D-pad ever IMO). When a console does not, I can pull my moves off 20% or less of the time. I prefer not to use fighter sticks though (I was never raised to playing fighters in the arcade when I was young. I mostly played racers in the arcade).

As for what Silent was talking about, I probably wouldn't. I would maybe put my friendship over it. I'd do whatever to a girl if I knew a close friend of mine wasn't dating her (or if some really big guy who could beat me up was).

So you see, Coded Arms was bad, but it wasn't a 1-3/10. It had a couple of things that I found at least somewhat interesting, but the rest of the game was really bland and boring. It didn't leap out at me as being Hyper-Shit-Fest 2007 though.

My solution to the 360 D-Pad problem is I bought a $5 madcatz controller that has a good D-Pad and I use that for my arcade games/DoA. I played hundreds of matches of UMK3 with that thing. Who said anything about screwing something up? Sandpapering some plastic off to make something work better and adding a thin layer of plastic are hardly things that could "screw something up". You must not be much of a handyman if you're so afraid to modify stuff. Almost everything requires a little fiddling to get the most out of it.

As for my insults, come on. It's Mana. I hardly think it's an insult, he'd probably be the first to admit his love for Sony.

Anyway I signed up for Gamefly today. I figure I'll try it out for a month or two. I realized that buying $60 games is rediculous, especially for stuff I really want to play, but not buy like The Simpsons, Ace Combat 6, Dementium, Sega Rally Revo, etc. etc.

As for the 360, it works well. You can do it a bit without taking the controller apart, but it works much better to dismantle it. To get into a wireless controller you need a T8 Torx Secuity bit, which I'm convinced no one in Wisconsin sells--and it needs to be long to get into the recessed holes on the controller. I ended up getting this as it's like an all-in-one kit for getting into game consoles:

I don't think it gets much better than VF5 for fighters, the online play and gameplay revisions just are that much better. I think the only thing that kept them from giving the PS3 version a 10 was no online play.

no online fighter should go without lobbies. I wouldn't give it a 10 for that reason alone. Tekken did it this year, DoA did it years ago, hopefully VF6 (or 5 Evo) will get it right.

Fighting games all come down to personal preference. I think that Soul Calibur and Tekken are better games then Virtua Fighter, but yet they still dont score as high.

Besides, why should a site be stingy with 10s? If a game is that good, it's that good.In my mind 10=perfect, flawless, nothing could be done better with this game. There's very few games I could see fitting that bill. Possibly the Game Boy Tetris and Mario 3 (<--SUBJECTIVE EVALUATION!)

But if 10, like Chacy seems to dole them out, means "FANTASTIC!" but possibly not without some flaws, then I could see doling out 10s more often. As it stands, a 10 for me just means some reviewer over-indulging in hyperbole.

back OT, getting disgaea and dementium today, prolly gonna play them both during my shift at work.I see what you me. I prefer not to do anything with my video game items because I'm too worried I'd mess them up. The only way I'd maybe consider is if I already had plenty of a particular item, and someone gave me an extra for free.

I just traded in two PS3 games (they were both multi-platform ones) to get $28 in store credit at GS. I might use that money to pick up Disgaea: AoD shortly.

This has NOTHING to do with it lacking online play. The graphics are great and the gameplay is finely tuned, but I just don't have a lot of fun with it. Also, the loading times are a tad annoying (especially with a 20GB PS3, since it has a smaller cache). I just like Tekken 5: DR much more. I bought the two around the same time early this year, and I ended up playing Tekken 5: DR 10X more. Oh course VF5 looked better, but Tekken 5: DR was just more fun IMO and I enjoyed the no loading between battles for once in a Tekken.

It just seems that a lot of times 10s (or high 9s) are a result of the hype train rather than being based on the game's merits. Not that those are always mutually exclusive, but it happens.

If ten is perfect then you might as well move it to 11 and still use ten for those once or twice a year games that are better than anything else around.

I like reviews to have multiple levels that allow the reader spend as much time as they want on the review.

Some are only going to look at the score. Some are only going to read the closing paragraph of text that wraps up the review (or some sort of good/bad subsection). And some want to read the whole review.

I only read reviews after I finish a game. At that point I just want to hear another opinion of the game (a well thought out and well written opinion). I do the same thing with movies and books. My buying decision is made up from from previews, meta scores, and general public opinion. I know the kind of games that I like and I seek out the games that I hear are fantastic.

So I want less product reports and more actual reviews in my game reviews.

I think they should give it a range if they are to stick with numbers and a numeral system. Like this game ranges from 8.5-9.5 or its a 6-7/10 game.

Im personally tired of reviews from sites. A score is a persons opinion not an evaluation of a game. There are so few things that you can say that are objective about games, the rest is just subjective.True enough, but reviews operate (or try to) on the principle of agreed-upon opinions. Generally, it is thought that low and spastic framerates are a bad thing, but even that's subjective as someone could say that they do like that.

Personally, I could do without final scores and just have a detailed analysis of the game (so often, sites like 1UP and Gamespot have review texts that don't match their final scores in my opinion). But a decently written summary of what the game is or isn't would be nice to help me decide.

For instance, if the reviews of Bioshock had said, "Great atmosphere, turns into fetch quests in the 2nd 1/2 of the game" I would've known that I shouldn't waste my time. :(
