External Hard Drives and USB Hubs

What does everyone feel is the best brand of External Hard drive, and the best place to buy one online? I am looking for something in the range of 200-300gb and I can wait till christmas. I would like to spend under 100$ but could go a little higher if it is exactly what I want. I do not want to buy a drive that is known to crash and delete all my files. I was considering Western Digital but I wanted to make sure their drives are alright first.


I also need a 7 port USB powered hub, if anyone knows of a good online deal for one of these, I would appreciate it, thanks.

anything but maxtor. no maxtor

WD drives are perfect. I've never had any problems with them, and one of the drives I had had for almost a full year. I recommend them for the hard drive. :)

Also, never ever get Maxtor.

I've had good luck with them, great to have for storage and back up (no complaints with any of them, and they are all powered)

I think I paid more than $100 (last year) for the 500 GB, but the 250GB I got at the Black Friday BB sale it was about $69.00 after rebate I think.

Seagate bought Maxtor, and sometimes you can score a Seagate drive when buying Maxtor branded stuff online (and probably in-store, too). That being said, who knows whose quality practices will trickle to whom.

I am pretty much set on avoiding Seagate and Maxtor, I do know about the merger, I will probably go for western digital, hears hoping for a nice black friday online deal for a drive.

Looking to back up photos and store my files on them, this 40gb drive in my computer is just not cutting it, and I bought a flip video camcorder so the more stuff I film the more space it eats up.

There is a Western Digital Hard drive - 320 - on sale at Best Buy for $100. I might pick that one up.

Target has a (I believe) 250 GB external hard drive on sale this week for $88. Not exactly sure of the brand, but it's in this week's ad.
