View Full Version : Where can I return an item I got as a gift without a receipt?

I got the HD DVD add-on as a gift but I already have it. The person who gave me the gift can't find the receipt either. What are my options? I know that ToysRUs no longer takes returns without receipts. I've heard Walmart does at least for cheaper stuff but would they take my extra HD DVD add-on?
Update:
Receipt has been found.

Try selling it. Because if you try to return it to a store you didn't buy it from, it's fucking return fraud.
Ask the person that bought for you if they used a credit card for the transaction. If they did, the store can go back look up the transaction with that card number.

Good advice here. However not all stores can do this.

^ True but that is probably your best bet, especially with the cost of that item most people wouldn't pay cash. Should hopefully have a record. If I remember right Best Buy can even look it up by last name, date, etc.

^ gs's policy is VERY strict when it comes to returns without a reciept, its basically no reciept, go away!...or trade it in and get less than half back for it even if its sealed :-p..some places operate differently than others, tangerine had awesome advice for this situation, and yea, if you cant return it, sell it :)

That item is probably over any stores price limit for no-receipt returns.

As someone once said, I think we should have a sticky thread for this that says 'returning something to a store you didn't get it from is RETURN FRAUD' as the title.
In each topic like this, we have 3 distinct groups at least:
*Return fraud is wrong, period
*Ask if they paid via cash or CC
*Sell it here or on Ebay

When ToysRUs used to take returns without receipts they actually encouraged people to return their unwanted but new gifts to them. It was a great service to have when I was a kid.

Hmmm, was that when they did the "Geoffry Bucks" and you felt like you were carrying Monopoly Money around the store looking for stuff to buy? Probably around the late 80's/early 90's?

Geoffrey dollars were basically what my childhood was made of. My TRU also looked like a shadey warehouse back then too though. It doesn't seem the same with all the well lit well organized shelves nowadays.

Yep. It was a great system and smart strategy for building customer loyalty. They still did cool stuff like this as recently as at least 2001. My launch day PS2 that I got from EB Games was DOA and they refused to let me return it so I was out of luck until my local ToysRUs offered to exchange it for a new one.

Unfortunately we lose out on great things that companies do when people take advantage and abuse it.

This type of thing does need to be in a sticky, and then people asking about it need to get banned.
See, I agree it needs to be stickied, but really I don't see or feel the need for a ban of anyone discussing it. Do we actually ban people using code terminology about modding systems? No, since I've seen numerous threads with people openly talking about it and none of them are banned.
Illegal tactics will go on, whether we like them, condone them or not, it's a part of consumerism and a reason why so many stores have closed their loopholes which allowed such practices.
I admit to having been a bad consumer myself. Back in the day, I took to 'flipping' copies of games from one EB to the next in my area because the other ones usually had higher prices than the one I bought the game(s) at. Was it return fraud? Probably, though I was returning a game I bought from that same chain to another store in the chain. Why they had higher prices in one store versus the other(s) in my area is beyond me, but I know it wouldn't fly in todays market.
I probably made about $500-700 in cash and/or credit by doing my version of flipping back then. Do I have any of it now? No, because I was a stupid kid and consumer back then.
I just laugh though, that while getting in on 'glitches' in stores systems is welcomed here for a 'deal', that this sort of behavior is frowned upon. Both are taking advantage of the system, if you ask me, so shouldn't everyone who takes advantage of the system like that be banned?
Then again, if they all were, CAG would probably have all of 10 members left.

I don't think these types of threads should be banned, NO ONE gives receipts with gifts and with the holidays coming up, someone is bound to need to return something without a receipt. No matter how much it is pounded into people's heads by the media, no one gives receipts with gifts no matter what. Its also considered very rude to ask for a receipt to return something someone gave you as a gift.
Realistically, people return stuff they got as gifts all the time without receipts without thinking anything of it, as long as your really doing it for that purpose and not trying to fraud a store.
I hope everyone just gives me cash for christmas....

i think what you meant to say was that brainless or inconsiderate people don't give receipts with gifts. heck, a lot of major retailers now give a gift receipt with your purchase automatically. if not, all you have to do is ask the cashier to print one.

That's true. I'm guessing the main reason stores like TRU got rid of returning and exchanging things without receipts is because of flippers. People like that ruined it for the rest of us.

I really do hate the fact many ruined it for the few who were legit in returning things, I am a very forgetful person and of course the Receipt never finds its way into my hands.
Toys r us was really paranoid when I returned one of the games from the buy 2 get 1 free deal.. it was a joke..
But seriously threads like this piss me off.. its crap. Stop trying to return expensive things like an hd dvd player you got with heroes and two other box sets so that way you paid nothing for 3 hd dvd box sets.
Stop ripping off stores like that man seriously.

Yes this is exactly what I meant, people just don't understand and never will, period. No matter how much its pounded into their heads.. GIVE A RECEIPT with every gift, no one understands, then when you get that one gift you hate, you are screwed.
Also, you may not want to give a gift receipt, most stores only give you store credit for a gift receipt then you are forced to spend it in their store, and if its a store that carries nothing that you want, you are screwed. So please people, give the real receipt, it causes a lot less hassle and aggravation!
No one wants to sell the items here or on ebay because you lose money that way, especially after christmas since everyone else does this, btw after christmas might be a good time to buy some things on ebay due to people re-selling unwanted gifts on there.
This is another reason why I don't excessively return products at stores, if you do this and you get that one gift you hate, you are out of luck when it comes time to return it, your much more likely to have a successful return with a clean drivers license record of returns.

I meant one of those one day bans or something. It gets brought up way more often than it should, and really, it is nothing but wrong. But of course, a temp ban would only need to be implemented after the sticky was made. At this point, I wouldn't think of a ban, mainly because the issue isn't out in the open.
And with the case of modding, it actually isn't illegal to mod your system, but it's what you can do with it that gets into the illegal actions. I don't see anything wrong with people talking about certain modding procedures, as long it isn't outright illegal (ROM's, etc.)

Are you accusing me of getting multiple HD DVD box sets for free by ripping off stores? I don't have a single HD DVD box set nor have I gotten any HD DVDs for free. I got my player early this year before all the deals started cropping up. The player I got as a gift was bought back in September before the Heroes deal even started. The only person who was ripped off was me because I was an early adopter and therefore didn't even get to do the five free HD DVD offer.

I bought Halo 3 from familyvideo for like 52 or whatever...
Never opened it because the game is so terrible.
I was planning on returning it to walmart without a receipt.
Fraud or not, I see no loss.
They get a game for it's retail value, and then go and sell it at retail value; things seem to cancel eachother out.
I'm going to do it tomorrow. COD4 awaits...

Many people buy gifts weeks or even months in advance so there's a good chance they'll have no idea where the receipt is by the time they give you the gift.
