I went to Walmart today and they are playing Christmas music over their radio. It's two months away. It is not time for Christmas music.

It's not new, but it's definitely sad. Colbert was right on Thursday.
Christmas is just too profitable, Thanksgiving doesn't matter at all to retailers and Halloween barely does.

The funny thing is that I see people bitch all the time about stores that have their Christmas stuff up in September.... but yet they have NO problem raiding said stores the day after Christmas to get that 25% off of the stuff that had been sitting around since September.

...And this is bad why?
Also, where the hell are you shopping that it's only 25% off?

Nothing bad about it. Funny that's all.

One K-Mart around here did that last year. It took them all of one day to figure out why they hadn't sold a damn single item so they knocked it down to 70%.

I would wake up, in the Walmart Halloween DVD topic I went on a rant about how Lowes had Chrismas stuff out on September 17ish when I went there to buy some plants!
There is one radio station in MA, CT, or RI I found last year that played Chrismas music 24 hours a day, seven days a week from Halloween to New Years.

Dear Politically Incorrect,
You refer to this time of year as Christmas, but it is an affront to my beliefs. Please refer to Christmas as Season's Greetings.

Yeah I was just looking at snopes the other day and that's obscenely high, but yeah, it's accurate (they had $457 or so, but that might be old).
The next most profitable holiday was Mother's Day with around $14 billion. A $440 billion gap...

Seriously, I saw Christmas trees in Wal-Mart in September when I was visiting my sister at her college. There I was in shorts and a t-shirt complaining about the heat, and they have inflatable snow globes and fake Christmas trees on display.
I blame Halo 3 launching in September for this outrage.

What's wrong with Merry Christmas anyway. I remember last year year a guy was upset with the Seattle airport's Christmas display, he threatened to sue and they (airport) took it down, but later put it up. I'm sorry, but this is America and was founded in Christian beliefs and Christmas is one of cherished beliefs (that and corporate America's).

Stores are kind of forced into it. In my store we didn't want to put up the Christmas items until after Halloween but we had to in early October because every other store has their Christmas items up by then and you deal with customers asking where is the Christmas items.
As for the Christmas music, I am dreading it. It's the same songs over and over again all day long. Working 7 days a week is bad enough but that music is going to drive me crazy.

Its because we got a bunch of people in this country who will wave around religion/political/etc as an excuse to tell the rest of us that OUR way of life is so wrong so we must adjust to their standards. You know what I say to them - how about you just fucking ignore "merry christmas" or whatever and just get on with YOUR life. Problem solved.

While I don't really care about Christmas displays (unless they're on government property) you're wrong on your reasoning.
This is going to terribly derail the thread, but what the hell, it has run its course.
America is not founded in Christian beliefs, Christmas wasn't a federal holiday until 1870 (Congress was even in session on Dec. 25, 1789), and Christmas really wasn't a big deal to people in America until the mid-to-late 1800s when it started to become profitable.
There.
And slightly more on topic: I agree with yoshi and can't stand christmas music anymore. They've overplayed the same songs and even though it only happens 2 months a year or so it's ssooo old.

That's why I spell it Chrismas. ;)
But really, Christmas is a joke, plus I say Chris-mas, and not Christ-mas so I'm spelling it my way.
And my favorite part about the Chrismas music is the fact they play the same 25 songs by the same singers 10,000 times a year even through there is more Chrismas songs then could ever be played in a full year, nevermind 2 months.
And Jesus was most likely born in the Spring, if he was real at all, so the fact we have Christmas in December is rather funny in itself.

Yeah well the pagan holiday they were substituting it for was late in the year (ya know, cuz of solstice and what-not). I guess that's just how it goes.

Yes I know Christains stole the Pegan holiday, I watch the History Channel. :P
I still think it's stupid people celebrate the day, act like Jesus is great and they don't realize Jesus wa sborn in the spring, if at all.

I shop online so I am unaffected by this shameless commercialization (Did I spell that right? Damn...thats a big word).
Now if Amazon.com would to put Xmas graphics on their website in September, that would be a clear sign that the world is going to hell.

While the music is nothing new, I was at Walmart tonight, too, and noticed something odd.
They are putting little flyers in the shopping carts saying it is time to start Christmas shopping. They are not promoting any products on it, but just reminding people of the wonderful deals and whatnot.
I meant to grab the one in my cart, but then lost interest and forgot. I find it odd that they felt they need to remind me of the shopgasm they are expecting, since some stores (Meijer) have had christmas stuff up since the end of September.
