Is there a good resource for getting a cheap, pre-built computer. I used to build my own, but I hardly do any PC gaming anymore, so it will be used for light gaming and regular web/office applications. I thought I could get away with spending less than $400 for a tower, but most in store items are about $450 or $500 with the new Dual Core.

Should I wait for black Friday, or can deals be had now?

I went shopping today, looks like prices for a decent dual core, 2 gb ram machine are around $500. Not as cheap as I wanted though. Any suggestions?

If you dont mind ordering online, you may want to look around on www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)

AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000 systems are $250. You can even get a Intel Quad Core system for $370. Prices keep dropping every week.

Wow, how is this stuff so cheap? Is it just because they are online retailers? Have you ordered here before?

I'd imagine its cheaper because they put together all the systems themselves, and use OEM versions rather than retail (same specs, just without all the fancy packaging). You can find each individual component, barebones (case, cpu & processor), complete system w/o OS or complete system w/ OS.

Cheapest is usually the barebones system. Its good if you have stuff on your current rig that you can just transfer over (hard drives, ram, cd/dvd drives, etc).

Each retailer has its own rating, below the company name is a 'reviews' link to see what people have to say about the sites. Nearly all the good price sellers have a 4-4.5/5 rating. I personally havent ordered on there, but the site was recommended to me by 3 computer retailers, and a couple friends i know that build comps. I really want to get a new comp, but the prices keep going down more and more every week.

Agreed. Maybe not the best prices but very good prices and generally you have an included 90day or 1yr warranty and aren't dealing with some shady small time PC builders. I've bought a few PCs from dell outlet - nice deals there for around $300.

Geeks.com has a lot of refurbished computers for less than $200. If you're not doing a lot of gaming they are an excellent deal. I recently bought a computer from them for $114 shipped and it runs everything but the latest games just fine.

But most of them do need a video card and DVD drive upgrade.
