We've had Insight Boardband for the past 7 years and we also had their cable TV service for 10 years before moving on to Dish just last year. Insight is a great company.
Since living on my own (only a few months) I've been using Insight as well for boardband and cable TV. I love the service: no hidden download caps and their CS is excellent (technicians on call during the weekends and most holidays!) and I've never been on hold for more than 2 minutes.
But I just found out earlier today that Comcast is going to be replacing Insight. I knew that Comcast bought out Insight a while ago but it was still Insight that provided the service.
I've heard nothing but BAD things about Comcast- hidden download caps even though they say it's unlimited, terrible CS, unreliable service, etc.
Do any of you here have Comcast? Is it really that bad?

Yes, abysmal. I get boned for $135/month for their crappy service.
Outside of insurance companies (DEATH TO STATE FARM), Comcast is by far my most hated corporation.

Comcast<Satan. I never had a problem with online gaming until Comcast came along. Now I can't connect any of my gaming systems to the net, even with a router. I MISS YOU, SOCOM!!!!

They had mutilple lines of people wanting to complain outside their office her in Shreveport, LA after they took over for Time Warner Cable and Road Runner internet. One of my students had no cable tv for three months.

I've never had a problem with them. We have basic cable and internet (8mb down, 1.5mb up) here and it works great 99% of the time. I've heard tons of horror stories about Comcast and I don't doubt their authenticity but I guess we just lucked out here.
Oh, and we are running two Xbox 360's and three computers. One of which is constantly downloading torrents. Yet, we have never had a problem with a level cap. Maybe it also depends on your location?

Hope you enjoy not being able to seed torrents. Comcast uses Sandvine to send forged packets that disrupt torrent seeding. You can still download from public torrents, but don't expect to ever maintain a positive ratio on private trackers.
As soon as I move, I'm switching to Speakeasy. They're more expensive than the competition, but they don't monkey with your bandwidth. Hell, they even let you run a server off your line -- something most ISPs explicitly forbid in their TOS.
But seriously, fuck Comcast.

I've had Comcast for years and never had trouble. Gaming's super quick, ping times are always awesome.. 8mb download, 1.5mb upload. I've always been able to seed torrents great.
I understand a lot of people have had trouble with them, but I haven't.

Agreed, when I had them they were fine, might be luck of the draw or where you live. Where I am now, Comcast would be a blessing, everybody up in Alaska rips you off. Cable, phone, grocey, even best buy charges more for things.

It definitely depends on where you live. I live on south side of town for one year, and our Comcast was crap. Then I move to the west side of town and got much better. After I moved out of the apartments and into the residential area, I didn't have a problem anymore.

I've never had a problem with them until this past week. My service for internet has been off and on since this past Sunday. XBox Live service was only slightly interrupted. The reason? They're upgrading lines all around my city due to the surge of XBox Live players.

No, it's not that bad...
It's way worse. If there is any other option available, take it!

I'm pretty sure comcast capped my download speeds in torrents as well. No matter how many seeds or peers, I can NOT download past 20kb/s and as for seeding, that's an awesome speed of 0kb/s. I also get kicked off the internet quite frequently (and it's not my router because my modem is resetting). I cant wait for FiOs to come around.
Go with ANYTHING besides comcast if you can.

Comcast doesn't really cap uploads. They use technology that looks for torrent patterns and then disrupts them by sending forged packets to peers connected to you. This is even worse than capping because a.)the packets are forged b.)people not even affiliated with Comcast are being affected.
Right now there's a class action lawsuit against Comcast for this.

Verizon offers fiber optic HSI to my area (Seattle) but it's more expensive and slower than Comcast. It's like $50 a month for 4mbit/s down and 1mbit/s up. I think Comcast is like 8mbit/s down and 4mbit/s up for $48 or something like that.
Back in Louisiana, I had Cox, where we had 1mbyte/s up and down (8mbit) for $40/month, and it was in a relatively rural area. Services like internet, cable tv, etc should be cheaper and faster in denser areas (see: Japan), which is proof that Comcast is sitting on their thumbs.

Well... at least it's not all bad from what I'm seeing. But it's mostly bad. I guess I'll have to wait until Jan to see what their service ends up like.
And I wish I had other options but I don't. The landlord won't allow any satellite services. I wanted DirectTV- since it would work out as the same price with Insight broadband, but DirectTV is all HD compared to the basic cable I'm getting with Insight. But for broadband, I really don't have any other options AFAIK.

My complaints on Comcast are SUCKY customer service, barely any deals for existing customers, and their prices are sky high.

only problem i had with comcast is its fees
though they are ways to get around them (keep calling and bugging them till they give you a chepaer rate)
best thing to do is drop back to the lowest package for amonth then get a super cheap package
cousins been doing this for 5 years and getting all channles for between
59 to 79 a month normal price is like 125?
same with high speed they been getting it for 19.99 a month (normal 43) for the last 4 years

I've never had a problem with Comcast's service and I've had them for over a year and a half. The only time I can remember not being able to get online was for the span of about two hours and that was about a year ago now. It's been running non-stop the rest of the time so I generally consider that good service.
Granted, I couldn't get online a couple of times after playing around with my router settings, but that's not their fault since it's not their equipment or service and once I put the settings back to how they were I was able to get online just fine.
As for the torrent issue, I've yet to run into any problems but I don't have torrents running 24/7 either.
However, individual experiences will vary from person to person.
My problems
1. Speed is really inconsistence. From the test I ran basically jumped all over. It can sometimes be really good but the next day really bad.
2. Randomly cuts off, usually a few minutes.
3. High cost, the price just keep increasing and I dont think the service is getting better.

A lot of you said the price keeps increasing... like by how much and how often?
In the 12 years or so we've had Insight, their prices never changed. Their service improved though (more channels, faster internet).
Maybe those Dish/DirectTV commercials actually have some points about cable pricing.

Well, in my area, they just increased the rates of every service by like.. $0.50 to $1.00, I think it was. They sent us a card in the mail informing us of the rate hikes.. I've trashed it since, though.

Over all I can't complain about them.. I get good speeds... uptime is ok as well.. and yes I can still seed torrents with the best of them.... I'm guessing it's because I"m in a small town, and they dont give a crap what we do out here :) but overall comcast is ok.. I don't have a choice, it's them of Dail up.. so guess I"m staying with Commie Cast :)

My internet speed is 3mb/s download and less than 1mb/s up. I'm pretty much a 10 minute drive from Boston too.
FiOs seems pretty cheap to me.
http://www22.verizon.com/content/consumerfios/packages+and+prices/packages+and+prices.htm
It says $50 for 15/2 and that's after the promotional period. That's what comcast is charging me for 3/<1, AND blocking me from using torrents. For me it's an obvious choice but if you're unaffected by torrents it's not such a big deal.

We've had Comcast cable/internet at my family's home in Charleston, SC for years and aside from the occasional outage or lag spike, it's great.
They are pure evil of course, but they have to compete with Bellsouth, a relatively big telecom in the region, and it keeps them nice.
