View Full Version : Fry's (Seattle + other locations) - Assassin's Creed - $39.99
ryamkajr
11-10-2007, 02:15 PM
The Sunday Seattle-Tmes and Seatle PI Fry's ad lists AC as being available Thursday for $39.99 - for both X360 and PS3.
I assume most other Fry's will have a similar price.
And this was not posted in the main Fry's thread as it is specific to AC.

Some newspapers release generic Sunday papers a few days early (meaning no actual late-breaking or up-to-date news) and that's one way you can get Sunday's ads early.

Fry's is a huge electronics store that carries huge volume of computer (all kinds of stuff- Motherboards, etc - and as an added bonus generally about 10-40% more expensive than Newegg.com- so I never buy computer equipment from them), games, TV's, etc.
The occasionally have great deals on things as well.

Nice price, hopefully it'll appear in the Sunday ad for the Bay Area Frys.
If it's on sale, it might end up becoming just like the "GRAW 2 for $34.99" fiasco. If that's the case, you'll need to get there like 2 hours before they get their shipment and just hang around until they receive it. They sold out of GRAW 2 in like a minute. Most people ended up getting rainchecks, I ended up price matching it at Best Buy. Looks like I'm going to have to get a copy of the paper ad.

Sorry, TRU stopped price matching about two years ago. I was thinking about picking up Galaxy there, but then I thought, "What am I going to do with a $25 gift card, when most of the Games at TRU are $10-$15 above the average?"

Also for the Toys R US Super Mario Galaxy deal, it doesnt say that you HAVE to buy the game only on tuesday and after 5. Its anytime from 11/11 to 11/17 while supplies last. ryamkajr
11-10-2007, 07:48 PM
Well Fry's ads are good as follows:
Friday,Saturday, Sunday, Monday ads are good the Friday through Tuesday (after the Friday ad).
The Wednesday ad is good Wed/Thurs.
Something like this, which is advertised in advanced, since it is avail "by" Thursday, is guaranteed ONLY for Thursday (or before). In MOST cases where they have done this (I am referring to Seattle), the same price is advertised on Friday, so good through the following Tuesday.
Again this is NOT SET IN STONE, as there have been times where the price is not good on that Friday. Also each Fry's location can and often has different prices.
So to answer your question, you are guaranteed the price on Thursday (or before). Anything after that date is "your milage may vary".

According to the Seattle Fry's Ad, the prices listed on Sunday are good through Tuesday. So that tells me that it's probably a 1-day deal here. I fully expect them to see out super-fast and then issue a shitload of rain-checks. Then they'll promise to call you when one comes in and never do so. Still, I have had some success in proce-matching to other stores in the area.

1. They are stating they will have the game BY Thursday. They may get it earlier - as soon as Tuesday (the official release day)
2. The price will be good for any point up through Thursday for sure. Whether it is good past Thursday will be known once Friday's ads are published.
Your best bet is to call starting on Tuesday to see if it has come in yet. My guess, is it will go fast once in, and you may be out of luck if it comes in before Thursday.

That sounds right, although video game release dates are always kind of questionable. Sunday's Meijer ad for example, lists Assassin's Creed as available Wednesday, November 14, 5 PM...as opposed to Smackdown Vs. Raw, which is Tuesday, November 13, 12:01 AM.

Don't forget. Fry's gives rain checks so that's a great way to make sure you get the $39.99 price even if they don't have them in stock. There is no mention of "no rain checks" in the ad so it's definitely an option. For those that need the game day of buying the game somewhere else and then returning and going through the return process is somewhat of a hassle but an option.

Really? Because I tried to pick up Etrian Odyssey there which was 5 bucks off retail. Well they never got the game on Tuesday like it said in the ad. So I asked for a rain check, and I was told sorry. So when i was checking out I asked to speak to a manager who went back to the video game section and talked with the guy who told me to beat it. He said to honor the price and the guy said the only way would be to call me when the game came in and he would honor the price that they advertised. Well I'm still waiting for the call. SO my store didn't understand how to honor their own ad.
Fry's is one of the worst retail stores around. You can see dozens of employees in all direction of you but none of them offer help and seem to be just walking in circles. IMHO I think that they might be an Al Qaeda training camp.

That's been my experience with rain checks and Fry's. I'm sorry to hear your trouble but I'm not surprised. Most of the people at Fry's have little to no idea of any of their products in their section. I have found a helpful person on occasion but that is rare. Be prepared for the rain check process to take awhile as with most things at Fry's.
Which Fry's is giving you problems? My guess is that they just don't know any better.

There were two ads for Fry's featuring Assassin's Creed in the paper this morning, one had the $39.99 price, the other listed it as $59.99, so this might be a price mistake. Either way, I'll probably just try PM'ing it at BB anyway.

Ok, let me try and answer a bunch of posts at once:
Re: Super Mario Galaxy @ $39.99 in LA:
I'm willing to bet the $39.99 Super Mario Galaxy is a misprint in the LA papers. Why? Because of the "Everyday Low Price" logo next to the price. That's NOT the everyday (MSRP) price. Plus every other location has it listed as $49.99. This is a great ad to use for pricematching though.
Re: Avail. Thurs. by 6pm:
If Fry's lists Assassin's Creed as Available Thurs by 6PM, then that means they expect to receive their shipment Thursday afternoon. Even if Fry's were to receive the game on Weds, there is NO GUARANTEE that the price will be $39.99 until Thursday. I'd expect that if you find a copy on Weds., it will ring up as $59.99.
Re: Non-local Pricematching:
Pulling off a Price Match without a LOCAL ad requires a LOT of luck. First, most stores will only accept ORIGINAL ads. If you download an ad and print it, you've already cut your chance to 50%. If the store you are going to is not within a 30 minute drive of a Fry's, then I'd put your odds at about 10%.
Now, there are a lot of "non-savvy" clerks out there, especially in some of the less populated areas of the country. And there's definitely some art in guessing which checkout clerks are familiar with pricematching, but not so clueless as to require checking with a manager.

The only problem with this deal (for me at least) is that I've never been able to leave Fry's without spending at least 100 bucks. Fry's is by far the biggest and best B&M electronics store, it makes a Best Buy store seem like a little mom and pop shop by comparison.

Oh no not at full price, they have tons of clearance stuff they don't advertise, especially in the game department. Games and accessories with 75% off or more are not an uncommon sight at Fry's.

Mario Galaxy is $49.99 here in the Dallas Newspaper

The ad is only valid until the end of Tuesday, but states that AC will be available on Thursday. If this ad follows suit with how they usually do business in my experience, Fry's will still honor the sale price at release. But who knows? They could claim it was a misprint and charge full price for it like with the $340 PS3.

I don't think any one chain stands above the others in terms of PM courtesy, it depends more on the CSR who's doing the PM. The Best Buy closest to me is great with PMing, polite/eager staff with no PM problems at all. But the second closest Best Buy has a staff of jerks with a seemingly sexist supervisor. I'm sure this kind of variance happens everywhere there are chain stores.

hmm I was just about to ask that, since I just remembered I have a $5 reward zone certificate. Can I do pricematch and still use the RZ cert. on top of that?
The bestbuy pricematching is mildly retarded, since they do give 110% difference, just not up front if you tell them about it during purchase (they will only give 100%). The way to get the 110% difference is to purchase, then go back in and ask for pricematch/store price guarantee. I didn't know that the first time and walked away with some blurays pricematched to Fry's price. I told my friend about BB's policy and he told me he's done that before and just bought something, then walked right back in to pricematch it lol.

Well if you're concerned about location, that shouldn't be an issue since the ads in OC Register and LA Times are identical. Whether your local Best Buy accepts a printed ad versus one clipped from actual newspaper is more YMMV. I think there's a good chance it will work.

Unfortunately from what I've seen at 3 different Fry's locations are that they never have any ads just laying around for customers to pick up. They just have them posted somewhere for everyone to look at.

Mass Effect does look great, but like others have said I would start looking to reviews.
This game got a 37/40 review score from the Japanese gaming magazine "Famitsu," who are notoriously hard on games.
"As a point of reference, 37 is one point lower than Super Mario Galaxy and the same as Halo 3"

I'm in Houston too! Actually, they do this quite often with game releases as I've noticed. If I were to check out first with a RZ certificate, then walk over to the customer service to get pricematch, would they take the deduction from the original price that they advertised? Or from the price after I used the RZ certificate?
Since I can't use the RZ certificate on past purchases, I would either have to pricematch 100% and use the RZ certificate on the spot, or use the RZ cert first, then attempt to get 110% (but from which pricepoint, since if they take from the post RZ cert price, I would have just been better off gettin the 100% and takin off the RZ cert amount).

It's right on CC's website. It says if you've already bought it, they will refund 110% of the difference, and if you haven't bought it, they will beat their competitor's price by 10%.
http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/name/Low+Price+Guarantee/rpem/ccd/genericContent.do
Circuit City is proud to offer the best prices on consumer electronics. Period. Buy a product from us and if, within 30 days of your purchase, you find a local competitor offering a lower advertised price for the same in-stock item, we'll refund 110% of the difference. If you haven't yet purchased the product, we'll beat the competitor's price by 10% of the difference between our price and theirs. Either way, you win.
maybe they're tryin to pull a fast one on you on terms of technical wording. That first line says consumer electronics, but there is nowhere on that policy that excludes any other product that CC sells.
Hey guys, I'm located in NY where there are no Fry's stores. Would I still be able to price match this deal at a BB or CC?

I didn't see the ad in the tribune this sunday....
I'm not sure about the "regular" Sunday edition, but in the "bulldog" edition (the Sunday paper that's available late Saturday afternoon), it's on the back of the Metro section (section 4 - page 14).

I doubt it, the odds of finding a Sunday newspaper that's put into circulation on a Saturday, three days after the fact...I don't like your chances. Most businesses that I know of throw out the "bulldog" editions Saturday night or Sunday morning and replace it with the "real" Sunday paper is circulated.
About the only place I can think of that might possibly have a "bulldog" edition at this point would be a library and they're not too fond of letting people borrow their newspapers.

OC Register Ad for SoCal with prices:
Webpage:
http://adv.ocregister.com/rop/web/ocr/category.php?id=17&adid=20071112084254
Enlarged ad (4.56MB):
http://adv.ocregister.com/interactive-ads/ocr/images/pdf/20071112084254.pdf
Look a the bottom of the ad. Under store hours it states
"Prices Good Sun, Nov. 11, 2007 thru Tue. Nov. 13 2007.
Prices Subject to change after Tue. Nov. 13, 2007"
However, Assassin's Creed isn't supposed to be in until Thursday. Doesn't this mean that it could potentially be normal price? Or am I just reading too much into this?

nope, price match policy will work. however, you will need the ad for prove on 9 out of 10 occasions. In fact some of my stores (CC/BB) are even more liberal and only PM ADVERTISED prices. meaning if it's cheaper in the store and it's not in the sunday circular, they don't PM it.
normally, if there isn't a local fry's, they're not considered a direct competitor. doesn't hurt to try, but don't be surprised if they say no. Wal-Mart would be the easiest tho. but they still want the ad. In fact, they'll even keep the ad.
I'm going to PM too, I hate fry's that much... lol.

Wow. So many people here are too ^$#%^$#^ lazy to read the thread, and ask the same damn questions .
For the last time:
1. Yes, the "ads" expire on Tuesday, but that is typical for Fry's ads. The price listed will be the in store price on the day it is available (as soon as Tuesday, as late as Thursday)
2. The price MAY or MAY NOT be valid after Thursday. Check the Friday ad to be sure
3. Price matching - ALWAYS hit or miss. It is going to depend on the store, the CSR , or the manager on duty whether they will let you match out of area stores to their store. YOU WILL NOT KNOW UNLESS YOU TRY. WE DO NOT KNOW HOW YOUR STORE WILL REACT.
4. Yes, Best Buy, Circuit City and WalMart match. Anything beyond that, READ #3 ABOVE.
5. Learn to read threads before asking the same damn questions over and over.

360. Multiplatform games seem to usually be higher quality on the 360 for now. Things may change in 2008, but as it stands now, thats the case.

Well reviews for Assassin's Creed are hitting the net and the scores are spread out fairly wide. Lots of critics are giving scores in the 70s (out of 100). On Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/assassinscreed), current average for X360 version is 85. Hmmm, maybe I'll hold off on buying the game even though this is a great deal.

Fry's in San Diego (Mission Valley) has the ad posted in-store, which appears to be the same as the Chicago Tribune ad posted earlier in this thread.
When I asked a guy stocking the 360 aisle if AC was in stock, he first told me that it wasn't coming out for 360, then that they wouldn't carry it, then that they won't have it until Thursday.
While he may have been an idiot, it seems like Thursday is the day for Fry's. No Crysis either. Did manage to snag a copy of Mario though.
Good luck getting your deals, guys.

Generally the game has gotten very positive reviews. The two so-called "negative" reviews still gave the game a solid 7/10 (and for IGN that score is "good"). They blasted it as much as they could, too, noting that the game was very repetitive.
I dunno, though. Sex is repetitive. I think they meant variety but just couldn't think of the right word, because practically every game (and every form of media, really) in existence is repetitive in some way.
Mostly I'm getting it so I can just walk around in Jerusalem in the 1100s.
But, back on topic: do I need a Frys ad on hand to pricematch at Best Buy? My BB is located almost twenty minutes away from my Frys and I don't have the ad. I guess I could search for a Sunday paper and hope to find it, but it just seems like extra work considering BB has to call them up anyway.

That's right, always have the ad in hand when price matching. The only exception I've come across so far is the Navy Exchange and Marine Corps Exchange. A verbal price challenge is good for up to $5, anything exceeding that requires manager approval. No one abuses this system though. Ever.

As long as you have a Fry's close by you don't even need a copy of the add, just go to buy it at you store of choice (they must have a PM policy) and say "fry's is selling it for $39.99, can you please PM." The manager will come over and call the closest fry's to verify, once verifyed they will PM...
I have never had an issue getting people to PM when its a legit PM (this is legit for me, Fry's 15miles away is selling them for $39.99)... thats not to say there have not been some YMMV PM situations but a genuine PM I've never had a problem.
