*EDIT* Joystiq - Confirmed by Microsoft (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/13/ms-confirms-downloadable-xbox-games-free-carcassonne-for-live-a/)
To mark the fifth anniversary of the Xbox Live service, Microsoft will be offering Carcassonne (Hexic 2 in Korea) free to all subscribers for 48 hours starting at 12:01 a.m. EST on Nov. 15th (and presumably nothing to the peeps who already plunked down for the virtual board game), along with 500 Microsoft Points to the ten folks who've been on board since 2002 -- see kids, early adoption does pay off! In addition, Microsoft has confirmed earlier reports that 'Xbox Originals' will be made available for download starting Dec. 4th as part of the Fall Update (the update's additional features have yet to be revealed). Each game can be purchased and downloaded for 1200 points ($15).
In its press release, Microsoft explicitly named Halo, Psychonauts, Crimson Skies and Fable as titles for the Xbox Originals initiative, but did not confirm exactly which games will serve as the jumpoff: "This new service will launch with an array of blockbuster titles spanning the most popular genres from action-adventure to classic role-playing games." Third-party reports claim the preliminary lineup will include Halo, Fable, Indigo Prophecy, Crimson Skies, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3.
Better move to that 120 GB hard drive if you want to get in on this.
Updates as they show up
*Each game will have a manual available, hosted as a PDF on the xbox.com site.
*Confirmed by XBL's Aaron Greenberg on an IGN podcast, Halo will be 2.3GB

Indigo Prophecy and Fable I want to download. But I am not gonna bother with this I think. Files for the games are likely to be at least 2GB. I am not paying $180 for a new HDD... Unless, Microsoft is planning on letting us use our own hard drives in the future?

Care to explain why you think that? What does Microsoft releasing original Xbox games have to do with Sony releasing a 40 GB PS3 model? If anything it "spites" the Virtual Console.

2 Gigs for these, good lord.
Anyway, a great idea, except for the fact that FABLE IS BC AND $5 everywhere. Gosh MS.
But ya, it'll be great when they start putting up games that didn't sell well and aren't easily accessible.

They almost have to if they want to help them sell. For the prices and HD space they take up, its an arguement that its easier to pick them up used for the same/cheaper prices. Slap on some achievements and the money will flow.
I do wonder if Nintendo/Sony would ever make their own achievement type system. Achievements are a strange appealing thing. My favorite part is comparing games with other people.

All of those games can be found for much less than $15, only morons will pay higher prices for the slight convenience of not having to use a disc.
Why is it that whenever games have downloadable versions they always seem to be more expensive than the non-downloadable versions despite being much cheaper for the company?
Practically every Xbox game (let alone every backwards compatible Xbox game) is easy to find for under $15, so I don't see this service ever getting anything good.

That's why these videogame companies go through the trouble of emulating these games.
The high profits of doing so.
The virtual console and the XBLA have already proven that there are enough people willing to pay for these type of downloadable games that this is a great idea.

Everything else on virtual console and XBLA isn't already playable on the Wii or 360 (except the Sonic games, but even they have minor improvements), so people buying those games aren't as big of morons.

I don't see why they wouldn't add Achievements, it'd certainly boost sales. For DLC, it's 200 points. For something like Halo, that's easy just do a bunch of "beat on legendary" etc, how hard can it be?

The rebuttal to that is the fact that you can't find a lot of the Xbox games. I haven't seen a Halo 1 in a store in a long time. I think $15 is a bit pricey for it (I mean it's a good game, but it's also like $5-10 if you find it online). Also, if you have the big HD, it makes it a lot easier than having all the XBox1 titles in cases.
It's mainly ease I guess. There's no easy way to get most of those titles. I had to eBay Crimson Skies to get it because no one sells it anymore. It's a lot easier to click a few buttons and have it on your HD.

Well, like I said, I own Halo 1, and it's just not In-Store. Ya, you can get Crimson Skies or Halo 1 for $9.99 via JR, but shipping is $3-$4, plus you've gotta wait like a week+ to get it. Why wouldn't you just pony up the 1200 points (which, if you're like me, you stocked up on at the CC deal), and get the game for cheaper through DLC?

A couple of quick things that sprung to my mind.
Crash Bandicoot isn't published by Microsoft in any markets. Neither was Indigo Prophecy (Crash was VU games in the states, Konami everywhere else. Indigo was Atari all the way). To mention specifically that the update will allow users to play Microsoft published titles then to produce a list that contains two non Microsoft published titles seems a bit...off.
Onto the price point. Assuming all of this is true, Microsoft is going to have to up the ante and attempt to make you believe that X cost is better than buying it for $2 for the physical disc at Gamestop. If they introduce achievements (500 per game perhaps?) and multiplayer on titles that did not have it previously, they're on the right track. I'd like to see some graphical upgrades if I'm dishing out extra money for something already on my shelf.
I also don't buy the $15 price point. Unless the arcade games prices are getting slashed. Microsoft expects me to pay nearly the same price for Marathon when I can buy the full version of Halo? Even without any updates, the better value is in Halo. I'd imagine purely Xbox Live Arcade development companies would be none too happy about losing revenue because they do not have the resources to produce Xbox-quality games.

I'm pretty sure they will do the achivement upgrade because the know for most 360 gamers its everything. I know some people who buy arcade games just for the measley 200 points. 1200 for price is good 800-900 better but hopefully they will do something to justify the 1200 price and most def I see achivements coming. As for online play i don't see why not look at the emu's for like sonic and etc.

Ya, but at the same time, that's a good chunk of change for Microsoft without having to deal with distribution, production, or shelf space. The argument with DLC has always been that it's pure profit. A game like Halo 1 is $15 for basically free for Microsoft. I don't think $15 is unreasonable, as I've said before, $15 is about what you could get many of these games for anyway.

Website shows it as being available in pretty much every store in the country Plus if you buy the actual game you own it. You don't have digital information that can only be used on 1 console that can break at any time. Unless the versions they sell come with extra content its a waste of money and a slap to the intelligence of gamers everywhere.
Also with the gamerush coupons and bestbuy/gamestop deals i can snag all those for much cheaper then $15 and i physically own the game/cd/case etc and am able to trade or sell it at a future date.
Also a check of inventroy for Boston MA shows more then 5 bestbuy's having it in stock.
So like i said if you didnt see it in store you didnt even do the most basic checking.

Best Buy's in-store check is rarely accurate. I've been to the local BBs recently, and I've never seen Halo 1 or Crimson Skies there. They have a ton of copies of Fable though.

Hmmm... Decent idea I suppose but assuming the games come out ala PSOne games on the PSN store (no additions), it's hard to justify $15 for something like Fable when it can be had for less in any number of stores.
However, if they want to release Baldur's Gate - Dark Alliance II for $15, I'd probably give it a shot.

I think this price point ($15/1200 pts) is really in line with what the Virtual Console is doing. Do you honestly expect GameCube games to be $20?
I don't think they could add online play to these games though considering it would force them to update the code when the next generation comes. The online functionality part would have to be changed. Something I'm sure Microsoft isn't into.
I'm sure these games will be more reliable than xbox disc games when it comes to glitches and whatnot though. Even with achievements, and online play, it's not worth it. Period.

Sounds to me like there's some wiggle room there. 15 dollars for some of these games is a bit much, but 10 bucks is perfectly reasonable. I bet we'll see at least a few less than 1200 points.
PyroGamer

Riddiculously overpriced.
It would be really cool if I could just download the games I have to my HD and run them right from the dashboard. Unfortunately MS has to find a way to nickle-and-dime (or in this case Hamilton-and-Jackson) you for any fucking thing.
Even if the games were only $5 a pop, I'd only buy them again if they offered acheivements and online play (also: online play wherever there's a system-link feature in the original game). Basically, if I can't play Halo: Combat Evolved with this online, then MS can suck my ass.

Considering that XBLA games have been about 1200 or less (generally 800), it would strike me that prices would not be less than 1200, but more. Not that this is really the logical thing, but I can't see Microsoft offering these for less than 1200 with the current price structure in place.

Some people might 'drink and buy', but most gamers could pick up these and most other xbox titles for much cheaper at their local stores. I picked up Crimon Skies recently for $1.99...
To me, this is Microsoft sending a hypocriticial message:
1) No one players the older games anymore so we gave up on BC.
2) Some people still love the older games, so we're going to offer them on the Marketplace.
HUH?
Obviously, MS can make money on this. Personally, I'd rather pay 800-1200 points for a 30-50 added BC titles, but that will never happen.

okay, after looking at many ppl's posts, i have a strong desire to shoot ppl's dreams now, before it gets out of hand. take this as an "imho" thought:
1. no achievements- i highly doubt they will re-code the games for the 360 just to add this on. seems like a waste of money (on their part, that is)
2. no online play for originally single-player only titles- ditto
3. no titles for download that aren't already BC- explained below
so how COULD M$ implement this? simple. you download the original files for the xbox game, encrypted w/ some key, and that game would use the software emulator the 360 has for BC games. could M$ have titles for download not on the BC list? possible, but why wouldn't it be apart of the next BC update, since the emulator code would have been written? to be greedy, but it would come out eventually

We all seem to be forgetting M$s MO on these sorts of things.
1) They are likely to hype this as a one time deal to test the waters and use HALO as one of a few games that are on xbla to purchace. If it goes very well, they will wait a year and a half to release more. It is very unlikely that they will prepare all the games they own for xbla at the same time.
2) Pricing is likely to be similar for all games, itunes style. Any game they sell will be good profit over store/used copies so it does not matter if they only sell a few hundred copies of a game at that price.
3) The kid factor, kids might not be able to talk family in to giving them game money, but they can get points cards as gifts. So, a choice between not having halo at all due to lack of $7, or paying $15 worth of points from the bank they already have means a $15 profit for M$.
I have made impulse buys on xbla, I'm sure most people have on nights that they are bored with the game they are playing and would like to play geo wars instead. Even now, I know I will buy E4 even though I think it's overpriced.

IOW, if they release Halo, Fable, etc. for $15 to download, and when people balk at that price, they say "oh, I guess nobody's interested in XB1 BC," followed by a discontinuation of adding titles to (disc-based) BC.

i would definitely buy halo 1 (again) if it included online play. Also, i don't think they would do this without achievements and it seems like they would up the amount to really entice people. Don't downplay the power of achievements, there are a ton of people who will rebuy these games merely for a couple points.
and... for the guy who says trophies are better. Huh? Because trophies are non-existant?

Once again MS shoots themselves in the foot with pricing at 1200 points or roughly $15. All of the games they listed in the article can be bought new or used for under $10 with the case and manual mind you.

I definitely have no interest in this.
The X-box was my least played console that I've owned, so I pretty much played the few games that interested me last gen, and don't really want to play any of them again.
Plus $15 is too much and I don't want to take up the space on my 20GB hard drive.

See, now this is the type of shit that can be found at K-Mart for $4. Why pay $15 to dl a game that can be purchased for half that (or more) for the complete game? Even used prices on these games are better than what MS will charge to basically rent the game.
If people are fired up about this service, then I guess that's their prerogative. I just feel like we're being insulted as gamers (and consumers).

So anyone care to speculate on the price points? I'm thinking around 1300 points (or whatever the equivalent of 15 dollars is). These games are going to be overpriced, guaranteed. MS is not going to make any cags happy, that's for sure.

While I think they should drop the pricing to $10 dollars on all these games I am really interested in the whole idea, this is where everything seems to be going, with Warhawk being downloadable it looks to be that everyone is testing the waters of getting rid of discs.
In the long run it saves them money because they don't have to make ridiculous collectors editions if you just get online and download it.
It will be interesting to see what this is like in a couple years if they have already caught up to the last generation being downloadable.

November 13, 2007 - On November 15, Xbox Live turns five years old. To help mark the occasion, Microsoft has announced several bonuses and a new feature for its over 8 million members. If you missed out on the fun of the original Xbox, it looks like you won't have to scrounge through the used games bin for a second chance.
The big announcement of the day is unquestionably the upcoming launch of Xbox Originals. Beginning December 4, Xbox 360 owners will receive a free system update when they log onto Xbox Live. Along with a number of unannounced features, this update will give players the ability to download original, full Xbox games to play on Xbox 360. Each download will cost 1200 Microsoft Points ($15 USD).
The initial release list includes Halo, Psychonauts, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Fable, as well as other as of yet unnamed titles. Microsoft has promised that this lineup is only the beginning and that Xbox 360 owners can expect to see the catalog grow in the coming year.
Microsoft is also giving away, as a gesture of thanks, a free game for all Xbox Live members. Between November 15 at 12:01 PST and 11:59 PST on November 16, all active Xbox Live members can download an Xbox Live Arcade game for free. For those in Korea, the game will be Hexic 2. The rest of the world will have the opportunity to snag Carcossonne.
If you've been with Microsoft and Xbox Live since the very beginning, you'll also be in line for one more reward. Every active member who joined the service in 2002 will be credited 500 free Microsoft Points to use as they see fit.

Are there even any games available for 500 points? I guess 500 points for free is better than nothing. Especially since I won't be using the new service for old games. The points will automatically appear in our accounts?

I am considering getting Halo once it is available. However, I could just get a disc copy if they don't have any updates with this one. I would definitely buy it if it had achievements in it, and would think twice if it was the PC version with multiplayer.
Now MS just has to get Rare to put up their great N64 games, like the Banjo Kazooies, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, and Blast Corps, and I would put 800-1200 MS points down on those easily.

I'd think they would be compatible. They already have their Live servers running Crimson Skies, so why bother making a new DL only server?
If they add new content(like putting Halo online) then I could see the incompatibility argument making sense. However, if it's the same game, with just the format differing then there seems no reason to expect it.

Wouldn't it be the shit if the new fall update removed the BC features basically forcing you to DL old Xbox games to play them on your 360?
The more I keep reading about this, the more I think that. It's like giving the finger to people who bought the games on the xbox and kept them for the 360. "I know you bought Kotor on release date for $50 and you like playing it on your 360 still, but guess what bitch?!?! You're gonna have to pay another $15 to play it again, from the beginning, and your old xbox disc is useless. Bwahhahaaahaahaaahaa!!!!"
or something like that.
I mean, why should I download something I already own and pay for it again? that's retarded.

I think what would make most of these worthwhile would be achievements and online play for games that weren't online.
So, hopefully it makes it possible for games like MvC2 to come out. Achievements + online play? Win.
I'd be the asshole to buy Buffy The Vampire Slayer :applause:. Hell, I'd play that game for the achievements :D What an awesome game that was...!!
So..if they DID go with achievements for Xbox games..do we say 200 points? 1000? Or go higher then an arcade game, but less then a retail 360 game?..like 500? 500 points could be cool.

I'm surprised that so few of you have considered the DRM ramifications of this move. (I only noticed one person mention it through the first 6 pages of this thread). Losing easy access to your XBLA games because your console died is one thing, but losing access to a fully fledged console title, IMO, is entirely unacceptable. I'm betting a good majority of the people who've responded to this thread have had the RRoD at least once.
MS really should revisit their DRM scheme and find a way to make it easier for console owners to restore access to digital titles after a console's death. If they can ban hacked consoles remotely then they certainly can transfer ownership from one console to the next.

They won't give out points anymore if you upgrade on your own. If you send it back to MS for repairs though, they will indeed give you the points to unlock your games for offline play.
I was kind of pissed when I upgraded to an elite and they wouldn't give me the points to unlock it, but at the same time I somewhat understood, since I could have left all the games on my old console for the new owner to play (of course I didn't do that, but how do they know?). It's not exactly an ideal situation, but hopefully they can come up with a solution soon.

Even if they did have achivment points, I'd rather buy XBLA games then OG Xbox games.
The only bright side I see from this is if they let the "virtual" xbox games play on live with the disk versions. I'm up for some Midtown Maddness 3 as soon as they re-release it.

I would consider buying these games if they came with some sort of new xbox live support, or if they ran much better then orginal games, which tended to have lag and slowing down. I remember all of fables texts going in and out of the game when playing it on the 360.
But for most games I would agree that they shouldn't be purchased if they are cheaper some where else and since they are just downloads they can't be traded in.

I don't see why anyone thinks this will stop furthur backwards compatibility updates. All of the games they've announced for this service are already backwards compatible and my guess is all future games on this service will be too.
It's easy for them to make the games downloadable because they already have them working on the 360 through backwards compatibility. If anything this will increase backwards compatibility support as they can now make more money off of old titles through downloads.
Most of the old games on XBLA are emulated, not ported. Backwards compatibility is emulation.

There will be some issues with the xbox games that will be able to be downloaded.
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge: There is some minor flickering at the top of the screen that happens very rarely. The "Press A to Continue" message is missing when the host player leaves a multiplayer game. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)
Fable: There are some random bursts of audio static and some minor texture issues and a short hang up when removing tattoos. I never dealt with Microsoft about the DRM issues when I exchanged my 360 for another at Target. I don't mind much. But, considering some of these games are offline... if you lose your console... that's gonna be a mess.

I could go for Indigo Prophecy. This is cool, with two problems:
-Games are tied to the hardware. Someone once claimed that as of the spring '07 update you could play them on any console offline as long you're playing them on the profile that bought them. That would be cool, but since then I've heard otherwise.
-The huge amount of space these take up. Wouldn't be an issue if we could use our own drives. I just bought a "regular" 360 too. Figures. If issue #1 didn't exist, I'd actually start buying them and suddenly 120GB seems reasonable.

Right, because emulation never has issues.
# Tekken 5: A number of modes don't play background music properly.
# Xenosaga Episode II: The opening movie sometimes stops and sometimes doesn't properly play background music.
# Code Age Commanders: Problems (including data loss) with save game data.
# Radiata Stories: Background music during movie scenes may not play back properly.
# Star Ocean Till the End of Time (includes Directors Cut): Movie scenes may not have proper sound playback.
# Driving Emotion Type-S: BGM may not properly play back during races
# Gran Turismo 4: The screen may freeze following the title demo.
# Hot Shots Golf 3/4: Some sort of problem with the controls becoming unresponsive
# Operator's Side: The game freezes at the logo screen when started up with the Seamic controller
# Onimusha Dawn of Dreams: Screen will occasionally appear 2cm to the right
# Hyper Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition: The screen will not appear correctly in some instances. The S.F.II Movie cannot play properly.
# Megaman X7: There are times when the background music won't play properly
# Devil May Cry: The screen will sometimes freeze during the title demo
# Onimusha: During movie playback, the sound will occasionally stop
# Suikoden III: Cannot read PS1 data during the game.
# Silent Hill 2: When going from the title screen to the demo screen, the screen may freeze

He said no added functionality to games. IE no online play for older games such as Halo. So, how is this better than Virtual Console now?
It's Virtual Console pricing under a different console. No modifications, no bonuses, etc. And here people thought Microsoft would change that.

Here's a dumb question.
Is it possible that they may offer DLC for some of these games down the line?
I mean think about it.
Microsoft LOVES raping us. (Hell all these companies do, but let's think of Microsoft as the rapist with the biggest dick.. ouch!). Is it quite possible that..they will charge us 1200 points for these games, then say..offer expansions for 500-800+ points down the line? i.e. Online play in Halo. Additional maps for Halo. ETC. I could see this happening. Not expecting it, but I could def see it.
I haven't read any articles (lazy, FTW). I understand no new content/achievements, but for games that were originally Live enabled, will they remain Live?

I doubt they'd do this, seeing as how they are merely putting these out to make a quick buck. Basically, the less amount of work they have to do to these games means more profit for them. That's also why I did not expect them to add anything to these titles. No big deal, those who want these games will buy them; those that don't won't.

While I will not be buying any of these games, I don't get the pricing structure complaints...the wii vc is $10 for a n64 game...I would imagine a gamecube game would cost more...yes $15 is a lot to pay for a game that is b/c and can be had for less then $15, but it really isn't that far out of line with other pricing structures setup by other hardware makers.

I think MS is missing a golden opportunity to undercut Nintendo here. (Did I already type this or did I dream it? Hmmm.)
They could charge 800 MS points (10 bucks) and say something like, "Here's what your ten dollars gets you with the Virtual Console." and show, I dunno, someone spinning out on a banana peel in Mario Kart 64 (great game, I know, I'm not the one making the commercial). Then, they'd say something like, "This is what your ten dollars gets you on Xbox Live!" and show Master Chief running fools over with a Ghost and then humping a face. I dunno. I miss Sega's abusive commercials.

I really dunno if I'll buy any of these. I guess we'll have to wait and see what kind of releases we end up getting...and how often they are released.
I'm guessing part of the dashboard update, they will have their own section for this? Or are they going to be downloaded and store where our arcade games are.. ?
There's a few Xbox games I'm considering getting. We'll see. I'm not totally against this but I am disappointed in no achievements. Will we at least get an icon on our gamercard?! Clearly it's not important.. but c'mon! At least let us have the damn icon that said we played it,
Besides the fact that you can generally get some of these games for cheaper, I think the pricing is fair. I mean on the VC NES games are $5..and N64 games run you $10. Since Xbox WAS a generation after N64..$15 makes sense. If the Wii was capable of having GCN games downloaded..I'd say $15 would be fair too. Just like the VC, you're just getting the game and that's it.
Overall, I hope we can get some GOOD games. And games that are kinda rare OR cost more then $15.
Also.. I'm wondering if there will be set releases for these games? Once a week? Once every 2 weeks? Or ..whenever?
This may not be for everyone.. But I welcome it. It potentially can be good.

As for old Virtual Console games, going on places like eBay to get games is more expensive than the Virtual Console. But some games you can't get. Here, since it's last generation, and there are used copies on the shelf, you can find them much cheaper and you get to play them online or off. I guess what I'm saying is...

yes but that isn't the price that is given by Microsoft. There is NO WAY Microsoft can use that same justification. They can only say 1200 MS points = $15 and since Fuzion Frenzy is MSRP $9.99 you are paying $5 more to get a game that has documented issues. That like any other arcade game if your system dies it's most likely going to be gone.

No one seems to know. Originally at least you could only run downloaded content when connected online, or else it would revert to a demo (if played on a different 360). There have been some claims that that's changed, but other claims that it hasn't.
I really want a straight answer about that, because I won't buy downloadable content unless I can play it on any 360 I want, with at worst a 1-time connection to the net to reauthenticate it or redownload it or whatever. But then I want it tied to the NEW console (or my gamertag, or however they do it).
I know for a fact that at least through Spring of this year you could NOT transfer content to a new system.
That's my ONLY real issue with the system. If not for that, I would definitely buy a game if it's something I want that can't be found as a retail copy.
I don't think $15 is totally outrageous *IF* the games can be transfered to new hardware.
EDIT: Also I keep seeing people post these problems with the games. They may not realize that those are problems with the games on disc too. The emulation isn't quite perfect. They're not unique problems to the downloadable version (which is just the disc version done as a download).

Maybe, but I doubt it. You could say the same thing about the PS3's PSX downloads. They're all $5.99, except for SOTN (which was either a cash grab by Konami, or a justified price since it was 800 points on XBL...surely both, I suppose).
The thing is, SCEA has done fuck-all with it. 13 games in 12 months (compared to 150+ VC titles, and compared with 130+ PSX titles in the JPN PSN store), with only two of those 13 being released since June of this year. It was an opportunity to show off the crummy pricing of the VC, but it's moot since they've fucked it up royally.
I suspect that the XBC will be the same way: sparsely updated and often with lackluster titles. Tao Feng FTL.

Yikes. I mean that was a LAUNCH game. 2.3GB eats up space FAST on the 20GB drive (which is really only 13GB...)
If they release the older xbox 1 games it would be great if they implemented live play.
Well...they have online play if they did originally. If they didn't, it would be a massive undertaking to add it, and at that point would make more sense to recode it as a 360 game and rerelease it with some upgrades.
