I hope its ok to quote from major nelson's blog but here it is:

I have gotten quite a few questions about yesterday’s Xbox Originals announcement (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/xboxoriginals/default.htm). Specifically, folks want to know if these games will have additional functionality like Achievements and Gamer score. The answer is no. “These are the original games that were created before Xbox 360. In order to preserve the integrity of the original gaming experience they provide, they will have the features available at the time of their initial release.” I hope that clears that up.

Edit:
(I posted the following in the comments, but I wanted to make sure you all saw it)
I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but I thought it would be best to get clear up an misunderstanding up right up front. I'll talk more about it on my show this week. Would it have been cool? Sure it would ...but as many folks have noted, for a variety of reasons it's just not possible. :(

That sucks I would of brought the games just for achivements and enhancements alike kind of a rip off to buy the game and can't even do anything more than the old one.

lol "preserve the integrity".

In other words you are lazy bastards trying to rip off your customers any way possible.

Fuck this shit.

EDIT: To be fair I'm sure it's probably a lot more complicated than I imagine, but still, without achievements it's even more unacceptable that these things are $15 a pop.

Just another reason I'm sticking to my classic disc versions.

These downloads will sell like hotcakes because consumers are fucking idiots.

This should probably have been posted in the big classic XBX game thread we already have:

IMO its a very bad idea to just port the game over espicially with out achivements. I mean come on if you can port Sonic 2 and add achivements then why can't u port a xbox game. Well hopefully this is just a "lets throw this out there and see what happens" game plan and once they see (hopefully) that no body is buying them they will revamp and add achivements.

I wasn't going to buy any in the first place but this is just stupid. "Preserve the integrity"? BS. I am going to tell everyone to not download any regular xbox games now.

And I will start now.

Don't buy any of these. ;)

I wonder if they let you chat with friends while you're playing?

the interview with the dood said you can hit the guide button during the game, but functions like achievements and messaging during the game are limited, so that will most likely mean no chat .

My translation of that is "No, You can't use the guide except for turning off the 360 or going to the dashboard"

I didn't know people even expected a game running in emulation would have any changes made to it. It's no different than Virtual Console.

This doesn't surprise me. Although it would have made a lot of sense to give added incentive to buying games on XBL, it makes more sense for Microsoft's bottom line to simply emulate original games, a la virtual console. I hope nobody downloads these, but I'm sure they will.

I just have to laugh I got Crimson skies for 5$ shipped over two years ago, and now their going to sell it for 15$, what a deal…

If you really wanted these old xbox games you could find them used for only a few bucks. Not sure how good of idea this is MS maybe like 2 years this should have been a good idea.

Well, this just confirmed that I won't be purchasing any of these, especially since I already have all of the ones I'm interested in on disc.

If there was any added functionality like achievements, I might have sprung for one or two for that and the convenience. But not now.

very stupid, considering most of those games can be found for 10 bucks (or less) at any store.

stupid or not, I'd rather buy Psychonauts from XBL so Double Fine can have some of the money instead of buying it used and giving all the profits to the retailer.

Now that you bring that up, I would reccomend buying psychonauts but no other ones.

I can see where this would be a deal on some of the hard to find games, but on the games that are still in stock I'll pass.

then I guess almost every game will be a deal since apparently halo is the only xbox game that isnt impossible to find lol.

I'm buying Psychonauts. I'd rather microsoft knows I want Double Fine games. It's better than giving it to gamestop's pawnshop.

I'm not sure people appreciate how much work would have to be done to give these games achievements (or anything else for that matter).

Just to get back compat to work at all they have to get the source code and, basically, re-compile the executable (against a different SDK which can cause problems), which then requires more work to ensure it plays well. In addition, Live is implemented in a completely different way on 360 vs. Xbox 1.

Not everyone is a hardcore gamer that has already played (or owns) all these games. I personally like the idea of having digital versions of some of these games, if anything, just for the convenience.

i think it's cool, but it would have been more worth it to have the achievements, more work or not, halo and halo 2 would have been fun to play with achievements, and yes i know you get achievements on the PC version of H2, but i would have enjoyed it more on the 360, oh well, since the only interesting games on here i already have the discs for, i'll have to pass on this one, only the achievements would have pushed me to do it, or online matchmaking in halo 1

Lame. It'll depend on the size of the download on wether I'll get Psychonauts or not. I doubt it though.

Psychonauts is the only game worth the $15, cos its pretty hard to find it even used for less than that. All the other games can be had for $10 or under. Crimson Skies for under $5.

I love that they want to 'preserve the intergity' of the original games, but none of the extra features these games originally came with are supported, and in fact, may crash your 360 if you try to choose them. Also, most of these games come complete with sound glitches and framerate drops in certain areas. Where do I sign up!?

I got it for $7 at gamestop. It is a great game but not worth a $15 dollar download. If it was the disc, then alright but not a download.

I can't believe people were even considering these with achievements. $15 is rape.

I won't be bothered with ever buying one of these if they can't be bothered with ever perfecting the emulation or adding achievements.

$15 is pretty good considering Nintendo's charging $10 for N64 games, but at least theirs play perfectly.

I bought Psychonauts through Steam, and play it with a 360 controller. Heaven. It's also widescreen, which none of the console versions supported for some reason.

If the 360 DL version is widescreen, I might consider buying it to play on the big TV. But knowing that the XBOX 1 version wasn't, I'm doubting it.

I got psychonauts (non-platinum) for $8 at TRU a while ago. It is def worth $15 considering how good it is and how it is kinda hard to find. Crimson Skies can be had elsewhere extremely cheaply and i highly reccomend it. Highly underrated game.

I might bite on Pychonaughts, but the others are way too expensive for $15, especially when you consider that they're just DVD rips.
