While browsing some online shops I noticed a new budget PS2 game from Atari called Swashbucklers: Blue Vs. Grey. It looks halfway decent from the images and video I've seen of it so far.

It's out now but there are currently no reviews for it up on Gamerankings.com.

Here's the Gamespot preview:

LOS ANGELES--Though best known for its PC strategy and role-playing games, Moscow-based developer Akella will soon be hitting the PlayStation 2 with Swashbucklers: Blue vs. Grey, an action role-playing game set during the Civil War. In the game, players will assume the role of the burly Abraham Gray, a ship captain trying to make ends meet during a tumultuous time in America's history. He'll get to sail between the Northern Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico in search of riches, alliances, and adventure in a game that's clearly inspired by the recent Sid Meier's Pirates!. However, while Pirates! presents a rather lighthearted look at the privateer occupation, Swashbucklers packs in some bloody, no-holds-barred sword fights and gun battles. We got a chance to see the hand-to-hand and ship-to-ship combat as well as some of the other elements of play in the work-in-progress build shown at E3.

Despite the gritty combat, Swashbucklers isn't going to replace your history books. Its stylized character design is reminiscent of World of Warcraft, and you can look forward to seeing some interesting creative liberties on display in the game. The story seems to involve some experimental weapons being manufactured to tip the war in favor of a particular side, so everything from Gatling guns to powder rockets will eventually be available, in addition to the six-shooters, sabers, and cannonballs you'd naturally expect.

The game will feature many of the same elements as Pirates!, in that you'll get to engage in ship-to-ship battles on the high seas, meet other characters and conduct trade at local ports, customize your ship with improved weapons and defenses, and so on. The ship-to-ship combat looks quite similar to that of Pirates!, though the greater variety of weapons and a few other touches may add more depth. It's still simple, easy-to-control combat that should be easy to pick up. After you weaken an enemy ship's defenses, you can move in to board it, at which point Captain Grey will have to take on the remaining crew, followed by the enemy ship's captain. The combat has the look of an action RPG, but smooth animation and plenty of gore make these sequences seem pretty intense. It's particularly satisfying to see Captain Grey rapidly empty all six chambers of one of his pistols to blow away an opponent.

Another difference between this game and Pirates! is that Swashbucklers seems to have heavier RPG-style character development elements. In a nod to the classic Fallout, Captain Grey gains perks, or special abilities, as he gains experience levels. So it'll be up to you to decide whether to develop him as a fearsome fighter, a skilled navigator, a silver-tongued trader, and more. Some of these grant bonuses, while others give Abraham Grey completely new abilities. Expect about 60 different perks in all.

Swashbucklers: Blue vs. Grey has been in development for a couple of years already and seems to be like a promising combination of tried-and-true elements with a unique spin. Its open-ended structure should inherently make for some good replay value, so we're hoping that all the disparate elements get all the time they need to be properly tuned and cleaned up in time for the game's release on the PS2 and PC later this year.

Thanks for posting about this game, Josef. I hadn't heard about this game, but it does seem interesting. It looks worth checking out, especially since it's a budget title.

If you pick it up, be sure to share your thoughts!

I checked a few more stores today and no locations had it in. So the only place I've been able to find it is at some online retailers. Gamestop.com does have it listed so it'll likely be at most GS locations by next week.

I saw it at a local Game store about 2 weeks ago (maybe last week) and I also thought it looked pretty decent. I am hesitant though as I haven't seen a single thing about it. I didn't buy it because they were charging $24.99 I think. Probably cheaper if Gamestop or some other store ever gets it in.

I do want to try it though.

the people on gamefaqs said it is similar to Sid Meier's Pirates. I might have to give it a try.

IGN gave it a dismal 4.0 and discuss all of the game's negatives. Granted, they also show the game retailing for $39.99.

Thanks for posting this. My interest in the titled has lessened a little bit bacause of this; however, I'll probably pick it up from Amazon.com with some credit I am due to receive from them.

I had an expiring $5 off coupon for Gamestop, and this was about the best thing I could find for cheap, so I went ahead and picked it up. After about 10 hours of play, I'm enjoying myself. I think the IGN guy who gave it a 4.0 was being too hard on it. It felt like he was reviewing it by comparing it to the game he wanted it to be, rather than on it's own merits.

Here's my take on the game. Keep in mind that I like playing offbeat, budget games. Also, I haven't played Pirates or any other games in this genre, so I really don't have anything to compare it to.

Graphics: The IGN guy complained about the outdated graphics. Well, this is a PS2 budget title. If I wanted state-of-the-art graphics, I'd go buy Mass Effect. And a 360. And an HDTV. For what it is, the graphics are good.

Voices: The choice to make the voices simply nonsense sounds (like Chulip or Okami) was a bad decision. It just doesn't work in this game. But it's not like you're talking to people all the time. A minor point which is easy to ignore.

Sea Battles: I really suck at this kind of thing, which is one reason I almost didn't buy this game. But I've actually been enjoying it. I'm still terrible, but I feel like I'm improving. If you sink, the game let's you start the battle over, which is perfect for me.

There's a lot to do in this game: trading, attacking ships, missions, boxing, leveling up, perks, upgrading and outfitting ships and weapons. I've mostly been doing the trade routes and upgrading my ship/weapons so far, with a few missions thrown in. When that gets boring, I figure I try full-out pirate mode for a while to see how it goes. Sure, it looks like it'll get repetitive and boring, but most games do. When that time comes, I'll move on to another game, but in the meantime I'm having a good time.

Best game moment so far (possible minor spoilers): I took on a mission to escort the governor of the island to Kingston. On the way, a Union ship attacks. Well, I was getting my ass handed to me, especially because they had a howitzer and I didn't. I restored my backup to just before the mission, did a couple of trading runs to make money, then bought my own howitzer. Better prepared, we set sail again. Of course, since I really suck at sea battles, things were only marginally better, but I kept getting closer. I think on the fifth try at that battle, I finally managed to damage him enough to board. So I'm maneuvering in, trying to get close enough to board, the whole time he's pounding me with his cannons and my ship's on the verge of sinking (once again). I actually see the enemy's howitzer fire. I'm dead meat. But at that exact moment, I get close enough to board. X pressed, we jump to boarding portion of our game. Minus 10 points for realism, plus 1,000,000 points for gaming excitement. After dispatching the crew and putting down the captain in a mano-a-mano sword duel, I take over their ship and, since it's a better ship than mine, I can now use it as my own. In your face, Captain Loser! I'm #1!!!

Thanks for the impressions! Even though it's a budget game, I have a feeling it will be one of those hard to find titles about two years down the road. I'm pretty sure I'll be picking this up, just not for a few more weeks.

I think this is a much better (as in better done) review than the IGN one:

This reviewer gives a pretty fair rundown of the game and gives it 3.2 out of 5.

EDIT: My order was cancelled by buy.com for some reason. Ahhh well....Hopefully I can find this game used @ GS or someplace for cheaper than the $19 and shipping price buy.com was charging me.

Here's some info on Pirates: The Legend Of Black Kat, which got a 7.8 from Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/piratesthelegendofblackkat/index.html?tag=result;title;0

Here's a trailer for it from YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPb9QpDu9j8

You use the Dual Shock 2's vibration function to detect buried treasure chests while in the action/platforming parts of the game. It's still a great looking game to this day imo. You can switch alternate weapons from explosive powder kegs to throwing knives and even use magic in it.
