Tues - See new post down below...
Ok, I jumped through hoops to rebuy today's Zune deal at TRU (smooth transaction just time/gas consuming).
It was meant to be a Big holiday gift surprise for my other half...
While shopping together today (a rare occasion), it was all about the apple ipod touch ... out of the blue ...."look at this"
So here's my question(s).
Do I jump on the 16 gig for $359 at Amazon right now Or if there is a chance an iphone is in the near future, is this gadget redundant?
Phone service right now is Team Mobile on a Blackberry with at least 1 year left on contract...is it even possible to use an iphone with a service other than ATT? I read something about Germany/iphones/T-Mobile today...
Yes, I am doing research as quickly as I can, but I think the price might change after today...so I am hoping with this background info, someone more intelligent about the iphone and ipod touch might give me some guidance...
Hope this makes sense.
and thanks for just reading this jumbled post!

If you're plan to get an iPhone, I wouldn't bother with the touch. The touch is just a severly crippled iPhone. You can use the iPhone on t-mobile with a relatively simple hack.

The iPhone is very cool if you're on a service that can use it. Since I'm on Verizon, I'm kinda stuck (different network type).
The Touch is nice because it is quite a bit thinner and lighter than the iPhone, but obviously has fewer capabilities in its natural form.

simple hack, eh? is it worth it to buy these things, hack them, then sell them for profit?

I have an iphone. I love it.
Was hesitant until I owned it. Greatest device, ever.

you have a year on your contract. Also, no way i'm touching a touch til they release the size they are gonna build up to. Come on apple 16 gigs? I could do that with like 2 artists.

this is brought up again and again about the touch, but remember it is a flash based mp3 player. 16GB is rather large right now for flash mp3 players (the new zune is only 8). As usual, you have a choice between large space or a smaller (thinner) device.
Don't expect any 32GB Flash mp3 players until at least next year some time (Early Summer? just a guess there)

Buying a Flash MP3 player is to knowingly slim down your library. It's pretty easy to update that and I'll take the smaller form factor over the size of the HDD based players. I've got a 8GB Touch, I've got about a 30 GB music collection. I've got my player 1/2 full and was already stretching for stuff I'm even remotely gonna want to listen to.

Did donut bite on the apple?
The Touch is the Touch. No comparison is truly fair, but one key difference is browsing the net using WiFi vs. edge data service on the iPhone.

I'm on Cingular, and im not even going to bother with the iPhone. I want a different phone, but it seems cool. I'm going to go with the Zune rather the ipodtouch. mainly for price right now and the bigger size i get with it. If i get my job at the apple store this summer that might change, but if money isnt a issue. Hack a iphone, or buy a hacked one for t-mobile. Or just buy the touch, and stick with t-mobile. either way its a win win for you.

Huh? You can use wifi with the iPhone too.

Sorry. Got my wires crossed. iPhone does do both.

I've never understood why people complain so much about HDD based players. I've used two for years and never had any problems. Take it with me to the gym, jog with it, listen to it in my car and it goes over speed bumps, etc. I feel that the problem is definitely over stated.

They just 1) are bigger and 2) have a more probable chance of breaking due to impacts with their sensitive moving parts.

I feel the same way as you. I did buy mine on day one and wish I could have waited. Now that I've hacked my phone and have all these other things I can do with it, I wish I would have kept my Verizon plan.

Well, I think I'm going with an unlocked 8 gig iphone (new except for the unlocking).
An iphone is $430 with tax, and my "gift" recipient still has another year with T-Mobile...
for $495 I found a knowledgable person (but really a stranger) on craigslist with a new, unlocked 8 gig.
He seems very confident. What questions please should I ask him?
He is the unlocker....and an EBay power seller.
It would be an unlocked 1.1.1 version. All 1.1.1 versions are now sold out of my state's 4 apple stores.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, all your help and advice is truly appreciated!

I wouldn't pay someone $95 to sim unlock my iPhone.
It's a very easy process.
And you can downgrade or even jailbreak 1.1.2 (except for the brand new 1.1.2's, bu they are very close to having a solution, should just be a few days.)
<3 my iPhone.
I don't even touch my 30GB iPod anymore.

I didn't know it was flash. That is a lot. But, yes I do need a lot of music with me at all times. I like a ton of choices. I have over 80 gigs of music but I'm not going to buy the classic which needs another update upon release or the cool touch with no storage for 400$. I also keep my ipod in my car glove box at all times becacuse I have a pioneer head unit that allows me to pick any song I want off my IPOD on screef of the head unit.
