Site has been getting hammered lately, lots of good deals.

I have a CRT TV that does 1080i and 720p. I bite on the HD-A2 and i love it. Should i pick this one up as well if i dont have 1080P? Also how long is this deal lasting for? Gonna try to pick one up later tomorrow If its still good.

Just a FYI,
Its a 1.0 Profile Player BTW. It will not be able to play all the special features of certain movies come January. No Ethernet connection either.

That sucks. for 179 i was gonna buy it as well.

Skip it.
With all the movies being released next year , most will be using web features, and specially enhanced bonuses.
This player is heavily outdated.. Id avoid at all costs.. but thats just me..

Thanks for the tips fellow Cags. My wife was gonna buy it for me for christmas cause she thought it was a steal for 179. But seeing as how its out dated im hoping a better one will go on sale later on.

Its not a BAD player, but if you like watching all the available Special Features of movies, it may not be the best thing. It has no Ethernet port either meaning when you need to do firmware updates (every 2 months or so) you will need to download the ISO and burn it to a disc. Even the current 1.1 player (Pioneer) does not have an Ethernet connection. Any current stand alone will be outdated in the next few months as Profile 2.0 is the FINAL standard profile, which no player to date has. The PS3 apparently can be updated to Profile 1.1, but has yet to receive the update even though 1.1 was finalized a month ago today.

unless I misunderstand ver 1.1 players need to have a second tuner for the pip and all the other jazz. The PS3 has everything and a kitchen sink in it but I dont think it has a second tuner. please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

Saving for a PS3 would be a much, much better idea IMO even if you never play a single PS3 game.

I have a PS3 which plays Blu-ray movies perfect. I ordered one of the Philips players to watch Blu-ray in a second room. I consider it a nice upconverting DVD player that I can also watch Blu-ray movies on. It has received decent reviews.
If it was the same cost as a PS3, I would rather buy another PS3. At this price I don't see the down side. Just my opinion though.
I have used the web enabled features on my XBOX HDDVD drive for at least one HDDVD and they are nice, but not a deal breaker for me.
For Philips Blu-ray firmware updates you can download them and burn them to CDR from Philips, so ethernet is not crucial for system updates.
I will try the 5 free blu-ray rebate when I receive the player.
In for one :D

1.1 needs a second video processor and 256MB of RAM. Only one player currently has this, the Pioneer 30. The PS3 can be 1.1/2.0 compliant, but its been over a month since 1.1 became official and no update has made its way yet.

I've been pondering getting a Blu-Ray player because I have the HD-DVD add-on for the 360, but some movies I want are Blu-Ray only... is the PS3 my best bet? or is there a slightly cheaper good stand-alone player?... I also have my two HDMI inputs used up on my receiver... one for the 360, one for my cable box... so, even though I can run another HDMI cable to my TV, I would have to use optical audio for one of the 3 devices... any idea which is best to use that with then?...
thanks for any info.

technically the ps3 would be the best as it has the biggest possible pipe therfore the highest sound quality possibility. 24 mega a sec max if i remember right.

No movies currently support any profile 1.1 features.
And you'll still be able to watch some of the FUTURE 1.1 stuff, (like the PiP), but as seperate video feeds, and not at the same time.
This player is a cheap option and would be good for watching movies now before you upgrade way down the line.
There is only one 1.1 profile player out there, and it came out like last month, it's really not needed right now.

Do some reading guys. You can start at Wikipedia. That is a ridiculous assumption to make. A second stream decoder can be done in software and no one ever indicated that it would require a hardware decoder ("tuner" HA!). How the heck to you think even 1.0 profile software works?! On that matter, PC software has been updated to Profile 1.1.
Anyway, saying that 1.0 players are outdated just because they can't do everything is like saying that your DVD player is outdated if it can't play DTS-ES. BULL. Some features are only for people with apropriate hardware, like, oh, I don't know, say... 1080p! Why buy the A2?! Only theatrical content will be possible to deinterlace to 1080p/24. Don't expect your HDTV-on-disc content to get that treatment unless they were some strange shows filmed on 35mm. Even then, it will require a high-end receiver for you low-end player. Mismatch FTL. FlashRAM is not RAM. It needs 256MB of storage to be Profile 1.1 compliant. All newly introduced players must be Profile 1.1 or better until the Profile 2.0 deadline. This means that they can continue selling the current PS3 models, but an "Elite" 120GB model with PS2 EE+GS would also need to be profile 1.1 compliant with a substream decoder (probably implemented in software, considering the multi-core CPU).
