View Full Version : Eliminating/combining the gaming subforums

I was thinking that it no longer makes much sense to have subforums for each of the big three gaming manufacturers.
The older generation systems subforums don't get much activity and people can always use the post icons to easily mark their threads.
I'm suggesting having the same 3 forums like we have now, but eliminating each of those forums subforums.
There would no longer be seperate PS3, PS2, PSP subforums, all Sony stuff would be in the single Sony Gaming forum and so on.
These forums will remain unchanged:
PC Gaming & PC General Discussion
Old School & Other Gaming Systems

Sounds good. Change it to Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo, but separate handhelds from consoles where need be.

Yeah, I wouldn't miss the last generation console subforums at this point. We really just need PS3/360/Wii/DS/PSP.

Eh, I say leave it like it is, unless there's some benefit to consolidating them, such as server space or something. More organization is always better than less organization. *shrug*

I agree with Trakan. I think you should change it to Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony with seperate boards for the handhelds.

Sounds good to me. I would see more threads that I would probably have missed otherwise since I rarely check the last gen boards.

Just to be clear, Cheapy - are you suggesting amalgamating the PSP and DS subforums into one handheld forum, or would they stay separate? I'd prefer the latter of the two. The forums... they're like... they're like salt water and fresh water. If the glaciers melt too much, the salinity of the oceans may drop to a point where many fish are unable to survive. Merging those forums would also mean merging the fans - and the fanboys.

If you visit the subforums now, you will see that none of them (except the 360 forum) are really heavily trafficed. I think that combining them will just make things a little tighter and easier.

So if someone wants to make a PC or lets say, Dreamcast thread, it would be ok to do it in the Off topic or what

Sorry, I forgot to mention we would still keep the PC and Old school forums.

Never hurts to do a little tidying up. Besides, gamers are lazy and don't like to click links too much. [/STEREOTYPE]

seems like it could be good, but CAG has other things that need fixing before anything that feels more superficial

I said YES because Microsoft has one console and Sony and Nintendo both have their consoles rely on connectivity to some point, and there is a lot of crossover between the two.

It depends on what you want to remove/consolidate.
I kind of like having things separated out right now. I could still see reasoning for maintaining the PS2/GC/XBOX sections as they are since they aren't completely dead. But I would be happy as long as a generic Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony console sections are maintained.
But I agree with Crotch. DS and PSP sections still need to stay separated. I shudder to think what might happen if you mix the two together.

Combime PS2/PS3, GC/Wii, and Xbox/360. Considering the last-gen forums aren't close to being as popular as the new ones, I think it will be a lot easier for everybody.
Now if somebody posts a topic about a PS2 game, instead of being seen by the 3 or 4 people that actually view the PS2 board, it will be seen by everybody reading about Playstation, and everybody will be happy with the larger amount of replies/input.

I'm fine with the consoles, but I am worried about the handhelds. I personally think the idea of merging the handhelds, esp. the DS, into the console forums would be extremely bad.

Why? Take a look in the forums at recent actvity before answering.

I think it's a good idea. It would be easier to get a response from CAGs for those XBOX or GC games since no one goes over there anymore. People might also notice the PSP and DS threads as well and generate more discussion.

I see plenty of traffic go through the DS and Wii forums, or at least enough that I'm fairly sure it would be a mess if combined. I don't see nearly as much happening in the PSP forum. If you must change this, I would suggest simply removing/combining the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube forums with their successors, and make a handheld forum for DS/PSP/GBA.
The traffic on the PSP board is so low, though, that I think it could be combined to the "Sony" board with no problems. I definitely don't like the idea of DS and Wii crowded together, though. It's nice and easy to navigate as it is.

Absolutely not, it would just clutter things up.
Edit: But it's your site... could we meet halfway? Combine all the consoles but leave the handhelds separate?
Thomas96
12-04-2007, 10:10 PM
I think its best to leave them seperate, because its easy to navigate the topics.. I think that you could eliminate the gamecube forum, and the xbox forum, since there's no new games for them. But the ps2, and psp, forums need their own space imo. I just feel like its going to make things too cluttered if you join the ps2, and psp, w/ ps3, or joining the DS with the Wii. I think it'll cause a lot of posts to get lost in the shuffle.

CAG has the best forum setup I've seen anywhere.. there's only two things wrong with the CAG website.. but they can be fixed easily.

What if there were a way to sort threads within a single board based on their category? We already have the ability to label our threads with fancy icons, why not use those to differentiate PS2 threads from PS3 threads, etc.
Just a thought. Frankly, it doesn't matter to me either way.

Why don't you PM me about these "two things" and I'll see what I can do.

I think it would be a good idea to combine the forums. Since the Xbox/PS2/GC have such few active topics, I can't see it causing much clutter. Plus, since you can play most of the last generation games on the new consoles anyways, it kind of makes sense.....

It does not matter. Throw them all together. Pull a neogaf, gaming and not gaming.
Solution!
Easier to Moderate, and less chances for trolling.

Is this to make way for the new Movie/TV/DVD/HD DVD/Blu-Ray forums/sub-forums? ;)
I'm ok with either choice, though if you are trying to consolidate, why not consolidate PS2/GC/XBOX into a "Last Gen" forum type thing?
EDIT: I guess they can just go under "Old School Gaming"

Anyways, I think we should keep them. I don't care for PS2 and PSP ganes and I don't want them to be mixed up with the PS3 discussion topics.
