some guy pirated something like 750K worth of games and only got 5 years and a 100K fine.

20 years is not going to happen over something like piracy

yea, there was a kid at my old school, he was selling CD-rs with roms on them, and he got cought for selling stuff at school, the teachers didnt care waht was on him, he had a lawsuit on his hands. because the teacher handed all the burned disk to the police, and the police contacted the right people.

Pirating is always going to happen, it just sucks with the GBA stuff for those that want to buy legit and get stuck with the crap. Thanks to this place, I am able to get in on all the local B&M deals so that I dont have to worry.

Its nice though reading the stories of people who purchased games from places like EB/GS etc and found out they got a pirated cart :P

One more for the good guys

I've personally never even downloaded one song off the internet, let alone copy a video game (I wouldn't know how anyway). I have, however, purchased "pirated" games in a foreign country. Since my wife hails from Colombia, South America, about a year and a half ago I went for a week with her. Of course one of my main missions was to look for video games (maybe they had a rare foreign system that we didn't have, etc.). I was surprised to find that PS1 was still the "main" system (in March 2003!) with practically no sign of PS2, and zero signs of XBox or Gamecube. The funny part about all of this was that the only games that they had for the PS1 were all pirated copies (thin jewel cases, photocopied artwork & regular cd-roms). I was shocked to say the least and I felt dirty even looking at them...until I saw the GBA multi-carts. They had these carts with one GBA game on them and anywhere from like 50-80 NES games on the cart that you select from a menu. Yes, I said NES- it's wild to have what seems like a portable NES in your hands. I bought three carts for $20 pop- the games vary But I'm sure I still have a lot of repeats, but it was still a cool find. I was worried that they'd search me in the airport when I got back and say WTF? You're goin' to jail for piracy! But hey, I didn't create 'em, I just bought 'em.

It all depends on how many you redistribute or sell, doesn't it?

Fines are based on each item pirated, or each incidence, and I'm sure there are some plea deals in the criminal side too aside from the civil suit.

20 years was just some artistic hyperbole. If you're dumb enough to flaunt your misdeeds, then you deserve a stay at the looney bin for 20 or so years.

I dont believe in Piracy. Those guys worked really long hours making those games. Also, I view gamemaking as an artform.

Because of that, I couldn't buy any pirated games. You guys can....but I wont.

Arrgg... I used to be a pirate. Back in the Dreamcast games I used to download every game that came out. Been down the same road with music also, used to download everything. I never sold the stuff to anyone else though. But just like an alcoholic does with rehab, I have cleaned up my ways and am an honorable member of society now.

you should see theres a place in jersey a flea market called columbus. There are hispanics and asians with tables filled with just bad looking GBA fakes sitting there. Its all tempting to look cause its a pretty site all those games laid out. But its such a joke. Faded packaging looks like it was copied onto there. Its always right next to the fake toys. Like dragonball X with bad figures in multipacks. Terrible

Only a few DC games (DOA:LE) that were either unavailable or hell to find. This was after SEGA killed it anyway, and I already owned a bunch of games.
