So I've got a computer that recieves a wireless connection to the internet, and I'm trying to have my xbox 360/laptop connect to this connection with an ethernet cable so I'm not shelling out $100 for the wireless adapter. The PC is fairly close to the 360, and it has an open ethernet port. Is it possible to use internet connection sharing so that through the ethernet port, those devices could use the existing internet connection?

I'm on windows XP, and when I plug the 360 into the ethernet adapter on the PC, A local area connection is created, but says something about not getting the IP address. It also screws with my wireless connection when ICS is turned on for some reason, either making it intermittently disconnect every few seconds, or it stops using it and defaults to the dialup connection.

Thanks for any help you can give. I used this sort of ICS setup for my original Xbox a few years ago, except at that time it wasn't a wireless connection, so I'm thinking it should be able to work the same way, but it's not.

I don't have a 360, so I don't know exactly how you'd do this on the 360 end, but...

First, if you are connecting the 360 directly to the ethernet port on your PC (ie. no router, hub or switch involved) you have to use a crossover cable. You can't use a normal patch cable.

For the configuration, the easiest way to do this is to just set up a static IP configuration on the 360 and then just turn on the ICS on the wireless connection on your PC.

Since you use the WiFi for your internet access, your WiFi IP settings are determined by your ISP, so no need to change anything there.

Your ethernet (local area) connection on your PC you will need to set yourself, since you are not using a router. I would set it to:

IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Then set your 360 up as follows:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.0.1

That should do the trick.
