There's a BD-ROM drive that sells for 90-100 at Frys and Amazon from time to time.
Saw it last week in Frys ad.

Yeah, that's for Lite-On's Blu-Ray drive. Lite-On as a company though is pretty shitty.

You'd be better off buying a LG Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drive or a Sony Blu-Ray drive for $160ish.

If I wanted to go the HTPC way whats the cheapest solution?

I bought mine from HP when they were running a deal.

- HP Pavilion Elite m9200t PC with TV/PVR
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
- Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor E8400 (3.0GHz)
- FREE UPGRADE to 3GB DDR2-800MHz dual channel SDRAM from 2GB
- 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT, TV-out, DVI-I, HDMI
- No Modem
- FREE UPGRADE! to 750GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive from 500GB
- LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
- 15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, 1394, video, audio
- ATSC-NTSC TV tuner with PVR, FM tuner, remote
- Integrated 7.1 channel sound w/front audio ports
- Norton Internet Security(TM) 2008 - 15 Months
- Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
- HP keyboard and HP optical mouse

That was $819.99 (plus $49.20 tax with free shipping).

At Dell you could get a Core 2 Quad/3GB/500GB Desktop for $499 (http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DDDADG4&s=dhs&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=746954). Upgrading it to 4GBs with a TV tuner would make it $609 and than you could probably buy a cheap (yet powerful) graphics card with a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drive for $270-300 from NewEgg.

So, either way, for a really awesome setup (which could also double a gaming PC) you are looking at $800-950.

I love mine. It's basically my one stop shop for entertainment. I can play any game out (only game that's brought my system down to it's knees was Crysis), have access to all of my music (250+ GBs), movies, internet and in the future, when I have a real HDTV, I'll be able to hook it up to a HDTV via HDMI.

Depends on how you look at it.

For $946.77, I have a brand new computer that can hold all of my music/video, play most games very well, play any disc I throw at it, and be a DVR. It's also super quiet (fuck off Xbox/PS3), should last me 3-5 years and I also get to use fun stuff like AnyDVD to break the region coding/BR+ and Titledrome for movies that lack English subs.

Guess I could have put that towards an actual TV but I'll get there eventually :)

Massive pain in the ass to get it in but it's in and it works. Previewed a bit of Ratatouille and it was very impressive. They didn't have There Will Be Blood or Across The Universe at my store so I ended up getting Lady In The Water (yeah, I know it's crap but I had to see it), Terminator 1 (my first time 8-)) and have Men In Black coming via the site.

What's with the hatred towards Vista people?? Granted there are some issues with the OS but the irritating thing is the people complaining "probably" aren't running ULTIMATE. If you want the true experience of Vista you must be using the Ultimate version.

That's what I had before I upgraded. P4 3 ghz, 6800 GS and 2 GBs of RAM. It could run HD-DVDs but they would stutter.

Dollars to donuts, it's the fact that they either tried to install it on a old computer or that they just bought into the anti-vista hype.

I thought Vista was a piece of shit before I recieved my new computer along with SP1.

Sony Pictures has announced it will bring the acclaimed Indian fantasy 'The Fall' to Blu-ray in early September.

Though acclaimed for its widely imaginative visuals, the mythical romance from director Tarsem Singh ('The Cell') received only a limited theatrical release here in the States this past May. Sony will debut the film on Blu-ray September 9, day-and-date with the standard DVD.

There are no tech specs or supplement details as of yet, but the full press release is due shortly, so stay tuned.

Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray has been set at $38.95.

You'll find preliminary specs for 'The Fall (2006)' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under September 9.

So I had a weird thing happen today. I pre-ordered the Batman Blu rays from Warner months ago. The other day, I had to cancel my credit card due to someone stealing my card info(I wasn't phished, last time someone hacked into buy.com and took our info). Today I got an email stating my order shipped and was charged to my Visa, which is cancelled. Did I just get free movies from Warner? I hope so! Their customer service was horrible and didn't help when I called.

Just picked up Begins from Blockbuster, regular Blu-Ray edition. They had the gift set too.

Apparently, this is pretty rampant, and when I asked the manager who I know personally (after the purchase was complete lol) why it was out early, they apparently have a deal with Warners to sell it as soon its in.

24.99, not a CAG price, but I saw it on the shelf and couldnt resist.

They had an open gift set behind the counter as the mgr had bought it, it is really crappy from what I saw. Its just the regular edition cramped into that box with all the other junk. The one good thing is the movie cash, the rest is pretty much throwaway junk. Even the comic wasn't particularly interesting.

Supposedly it has the opening sequence of the Dark Knight in HD. Give it a watch and let us know? (As if it's going to be anything less than fucking awesome...)

Also that Band of Brothers price is ridiculous. Then again, from what I've seen no one, NO ONE sells BDs at MSRP so I'm hoping from Amazon it'll be $100 or under. I love BoB but I've got every episode in HD to hold me over until this is a decent price.

For those interested:

Looks like Universal is loving slip covers as all the movies contain them (aside from Scorpion King). The actual Blu-ray cases are actually a bit square...kinda reminds me of the import HD DVD cases.

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6266/1000376jg3.jpg

The inside pamphlet also shows some unannounced movies including Billy Madison, Serenity, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, The Thing, Happy Gilmore, Fearless, Pitch Black, The Good Shepard, Hulk, The Kingdom and Jarhead.

I've been A/Bing between the Blu-ray (PS3) and HD DVD (XA2). And while the Blu-ray looks a bit sharper, its not mind blowing. I have only viewed a few scenes (and the same time stamp) and have yet to really get into it so its just a small impression.

The menu design is actually much nicer then the HD DVD. Cleaner and less clunky. Response is much much much faster.

Disc Sizes...
Doomsday says"BD-25".
The Mummy films both say "BD-50".
The Scorpion King says "BD-25".

It's got the IMAX prologue for Dark Knight. I haven't watched it yet but it says so on the back. There's reviews of the disc about on places like High Def Digest and Blu-Ray.com and both give the PQ very high marks. Its basically the same source as the HD-DVD disc.

For my money, Batman Begins is the greatest comic book movie ever. The only negative for me is Katie Holmes who is a terrible actress, but she doesn't have a huge role. From all indications, Dark Knight is even better which I tend to believe it will be.

That's completely correct.
Batman Begins is a must buy on any format.

TDK prologue looks fantastic. It is kind of dull though. That's relative to the seconds of footage scene in the trailers though. Which means by normal standards it's really kickass. Sound on that is only DD640 though.

Studios for the most part have said that they are more concerned with getting recent movies to blu ray, rather than past releases.

Which is why we havent seen lost season1/2, or greys anatomy (Yes I watch it, hush) season 1-3...

I don't think we will ever see Cable Guy on blu ray. Jim Carrey will probably put a stop to the movie ever coming out lol.

Well, like what kind of computer to buy etc. I wanna be able to store a bunch if media files that will play on my TV and also a dual HD/BD drive.

Cheap & HTPC usually dont go together. Good HTPCs are quiet HTPCs. So that usually means better components w/ big heatsinks and big slow fans.

<--- not a fan of buying comedies in high def... I'ld rather get them in their cheaper SD counterparts unless the extras on the HD version is that much better... PQ and AQ for a comedy in my book isn't that important, or as much as you'ld want for an action type of film. It's the reason why PQ and AQ are only 2 parts of the pie, 2 very big parts but not the only ones... HDM should be jam packed with features and I know most will say meh but others will say yeh! :applause:

From my friends at Video Business Magazine:

Warner launches pricing promotion

Initiative includes catalog, Blu-ray titles

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 7/11/2008

JULY 11 | Warner Home Video is launching aggressive pricing initiatives for the fourth quarter, including its most comprehensive Blu-ray Disc promotion yet, say retailers.
Starting early September and rolling through first-quarter 2009, Warner will offer a Blu-ray point-of-sale rebate program with which retailers will essentially be able to order participating catalog titles for around $11.
Even with a retail mark-up on the featured titles—including The Fugitive, Enter the Dragon, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, The Aviator, Road Warrior and Swordfish—the price tag to consumers should be significantly less than the titles’ current average of $20 to $25 retail price at outlets such as Amazon.com and Best Buy.
In this program, retailers will buy the titles at their present pricing but obtain rebate money back upon the sale of each unit. That should ultimately amount to a relatively inexpensive $11 cost for retailers.
Additionally, Warner will offer rebates, although less extensive, for newer Blu-ray releases, including 300, The Departed, I Am Legend, Ocean’s 13 and We Are Marshall. This layer of the Blu-ray program also will run from early September to the first quarter, according to store sources.
The consumer price for these titles is likely to fall somewhere between $17 and $20. That would still represent a deal for shoppers, as titles such as 300 are now falling between $24 and $30 at outlets such as Amazon and Best Buy.
Warner did not comment by deadline.
Although retailers hope Warner’s Blu-ray strategy will pay off with boosted sales, some store sources worry that the format is becoming devalued too quickly.
“They are trying to get this software business going,” said one source. “But it’s really a double-edged sword. We’re happy to be able to offer it, but it can be a slippery slope. Consumers might get in the mindset that they want everything discounted. If that becomes the case, we will shorten the life of Blu-ray just like we did with DVD.”
At deadline, Newbury Comics buyer Ian Leshin had not yet learned of Warner’s Blu-ray plan. But he seemed to embrace the studio’s strategy. The New England chain found success with Lionsgate’s Blu-ray repricings earlier this year. Lionsgate was the first studio to permanently reprice its Blu-ray titles (http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6554856.html), including Terminator 2 and Devil’s Rejects, down $10 to a new $19.99 SRP.
“Terminator 2 is our biggest-selling catalog title with the $19.99 SRP,” said Leshin. “It can become more of an impulse thing to buy.”
Warner’s Blu-ray rebate program comes on top of a straight repricing plan for a slew of standard-definition DVD titles that also goes into effect in September. As detailed in a July 2 newsletter to retailers, Warner will drop the price on varying titles to either a $19.96, $14.96 or $12.97 SRP. Some relatively new Warner theatrical DVDs are slated to fall to $19.96, including June 17 release Fool’s Gold and June 24’s 10,000 B.C. The discs originally streeted at a $28.98 SRP.
The $14.96 repricing will span such titles as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Blood Diamond, and the $12.97 price point will cover titles including Wedding Crashers and Ant Bully.
All studios often reprice titles as they age on shelves, but the retail community similarly has mixed feelings about such plans.
“My first thought is that I like repricings because it does provide our customers with a better value, where they can get the same title for less money and enjoy a better margin,” said Kirk Kirkpatrick, president of video at wholesaler WaxWorks VideoWorks. However, the studios “are repricing a little quickly on some, but they want to get the fourth quarter going.”
One retail executive was less enthusiastic about studio repricings in general, blaming them for unnecessarily encouraging customers to delay purchasing. The executive wishes pricing promotions were shorter in duration.
“Customers get in the habit of seeing the price go down and down, and they’ll get in the habit of waiting longer to buy,” the executive explained. “If you can do something that is very short-term, that will give customers a reason to buy.”

Im glad dallow updates the front page often -_-

Then give the front page to me and Ill update it every week. How hard is it to copy and paste what comes out?

Ice2Dragon you need to be called out just like you called out Dallow. Since your last update about the July 1st ones there have been 13 Blu-ray releases, 11 more are coming out next week and 18 more the week after that. To click on the "Blu Ray Release Thread" and see the OP outdated is disappointing. If you can't be bothered to and aren't going to update it with the current releases then you shouldn't have made the comments the way you did to Dallow even though I realize he wasn't willing to update the OP either.

Heck I can go to Joblo http://www.joblo.com/dvdclinic/release_dates.php and be done with it but I'm sure other people would like to have links here so they can just find out what they need while they are on CAG. It might take a few minutes a week at the most to do and compare that to what Speedy does and you'll get some perspective on just how little work it is. I'd gladly do it if you won't.

Theres not much really. Your best bet is really Xploited. Tony is ultra fast shipping wise because if its in stock, its coming from Cleveland and Xploited's prices are very competitive with other import sites if not completely better and you don't get fleeced on the shipping charges.

I've ordered about 6 DVD/BR in the past from them and they always arrive lickety split and I never feel guilty about the prices, although once in a while I could've gotten cheaper elsewhere, but the speed of the shipping and overall experience is worth an extra buck or two.

Its going to be tough to find under 40 bucks. Imports and "cheap" don't really go together.

Your best bet is probably Xploitedcinema, its like 42.95 there and its the all region version, the Jap version is Region A. Its a high likelihood that it will be released standalone from the trilogy, at least the first one eventually. If you need to have it ASAP you're going to be paying for it.

Its cool, I dont blame you for looking around, I do even if I find what Im looking for on one particular site. I look for imports daily and its just the best (Xploited) Ive found service wise. I think when it comes to imports -- service is far more important than price in some cases, and they're very competitive. Amazon is ok at times as well, but its hit or miss and title dependent.

What?

It's apart of the buy 2 get 1 free sale at Amazon UK.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=amb_link_71130065_1?ie=UTF8&node=671337011&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=special-product-offers-1&pf_rd_r=1E0HTVYVDM6WN9ZTANBS&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=203628191&pf_rd_i=B000R3431M

Even if you get 2 £17.98 titles, it would only be £35.66 after shipping/VAT removal. So, $71.20 for 3 titles or $23.73 per movie.

I like Xploited Cinema as much as anybody else (sometimes it's nice to pay the premium and not deal with importing from another country) but Tony runs a business and he has no special connections. 90% of the time, it's either possible to find his source or to find a title cheaper than he has it. The other 10% of the time is just him ordering in bulk to save on insane shipping cost for different sites.

That must be nice, when they raised their price, i got an email telling me my price was going to increase so that is when I canceled, and got netflixs. Now with flipping at BBV i figured I could use some more movies and give back to the employees. The BB is on the way home so it makes it very convenience and I can get a new movie almost every night (unless I don't watch the day before)

Hey, looks like HBO is finally going to start cashing in on George Carlin's death. I've never been a fan of his later stuff but I'll give it a rent.

The late George Carlin will make his high-def debut with the November Blu-ray release of his concert film 'It's Bad For Ya.'

Marking the legendary comedian's final stand-up concert special, 'George Carlin: It's Bad for Ya' will hit Blu-ray on November 25 (day-and-date with the standard DVD), following it's premiere on HBO earlier this year.

There are no tech or supplemental specs as of yet, but more details are expected to emerge in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.95.

You'll find preliminary specs for ''George Carlin: It's Bad for Ya' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under November 25.

Both the Blu-ray and DVD release will also receive a digital copy of the film, which Disney is calling "DisneyFile". Exclusive to the Blu-ray release will be a introduction from Tim Burton.

I can only imagine how beautiful Gladiator will look in hi-def. I was blown away when I first saw it on DVD.

Scarface was on the HD-DVD calender, so I assume it's in the works.

Gladiator was also in the works from what I've heard.

Question is if they made any changes that make it double-dip worthy or not.

I already had the Ultimate Matrix DVD collection and upgraded to HD-DVD, so they would really have to do something special for me to double-dip. I don't really see that happening, though.

I believe the only difference is... The Animatrix was in SD on the HDDVD version and it's in Hi-Def on the Blu-Ray version.

The Animatrix in HD is nice, but not enough to get me again. I would buy the Animatrix, though, if and when they eventually break the set-up.

The Animatrix in HD is nice, but not enough to get me again. I would buy the Animatrix, though, if and when they eventually break the set-up.Agreed. The pic dallow posts shows The Matrix Experience being on one BR, so I'm wondering if they did anything with the supplemental content.

HighDefDigest says that all the supplemental material is only SD on the HD-DVD version:
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/matrix_umc.html

If they did anything to take the supplemental content from SD to HD, then that might lean a little towards doing a double-dip. We'll have to wait for the reviews to see what's coming in the package besides The Animatrix upscaled to HD from SD.

dallow
07-25-2008, 01:05 PM
Hey now, what do you mean upscaled from SD to HD?
Is the source material not HD?

Hey now, what do you mean upscaled from SD to HD?
Is the source material not HD?Read through the link I posted from HDD. They list that there's quite a bit of the supplemental material that's not the movies that are SD/480i only. The Animatrix, as well as quite a bit of the add-ons from the SD version of the Ultimate Matrix Trilogy set.

If they redid all of that to HD, then it seems like more of a double-dip option than just getting the Animatrix in HD, which I'm sure they'd do as a separate BR disc anyway.

Any word on these classics yet..

Gladiator
Scareface
Braveheart

Gladiator and Scarface are definitely in the works. Gladiator is "supposedly" coming out later this year overseas, so undoubtedly it will have a domestic release date fairly soon. I don't think it is concrete yet, but its definitely been talked about. Scarface is basically same boat, but I believe it has a rumor of a fall/winter release domestically as well.

Braveheart is another ballgame. Paramount has been notoriously slow thus far since coming back to BR, I'd reckon we'll be waiting till 2009 for that baby.

Yea I scored Lost Boys at my local Blockbuster a couple of days ago. Love that they put out catalog BRs early, have gotten Batman, as well as the Mummys roughly a week before street each time. Thank fuck theres not much coming out that I want for a few weeks. I have to play catch up for a bit, but hopefully by August Ill have everything I could possibly want on BR thus far released and get ready to get wallet raped come the fall! Got the Jack Ryans coming in from Amazon.

Also, you import buffs may want to consider jumping on Xploitedcinema if you're on the fence. They're not "going out of business", but they are going to stop getting new stock in, so essentially they are going out of business once they are out of stock. Theres a post about it on their main page. I imagine we may see some sales before long.

Aerosmith needs to re-release "Big Ones You Can Look At" on BD. It's been almost 15 years since it came out on DVD. & there's obviously a demand for it since used copies still go for $60 on average.

Yea its pretty damn good. The best (IMO) is I, Robot domestically, and Zodiac Directors Cut (Dutch import) overall for purity in terms of sticking to the film's vision (Zodiac was the first film shot entirely in 1080p). Id put Sweeney in the top 5 though.

Um, no.

Ignoring the fact that Apocalypto/Superman Returns were filmed with the Panavision Genesis camera (native 1080p) and the fact that actual film is a much higher resolution than 1080p which is just shrunk down for home release, Zodiac wasn't entirely shot with the Thomson Viper. They used a normal camera for the slow-mo death scenes.

First mainstream film to be shot 100% digital was Attack Of The Clones, back in 2002.

It's believed to be the first full-length studio feature film shot and produced entirely as data from start to finish, with no physical media involved beyond backing up all raw imagery to 500 vaulted LTO data tapes during postproduction.

I was mistaken with the claim of it being first shot in HD, but it is the first tapeless film (at least according to this)

Even though I own a 60GB PS3 and more then 20 Blu-ray movies it is bad I can't walk into a Bestbuy and see any movie I can buy for less then $25.
