Yes, superbad is well damn worth it. It Looks amazing.
Granted, Comedies arent known for their special effects, but they are worth it.
Its 29.99 for all the extras regular dvd gets.. and that dvd costs what 22.99? 7 bucks more you get high def audio/video :)
Some comedies arent worth it in my opinion though..
Running with Scissors for one.. Sigh.
But Superbad is a must buy for Blu Ray.

$18 AR for Pirates is pretty good and I wouldnt mind owning it since it was the best by far out of the 3 movies.
POTC is a must have.
I wonder if Mr and Mrs Smith has anything new on it that would make it worth getting since I have it on DVD already.
I'll be getting Pirates, and I'll rent Superbad.

I've been pondering getting a Blu-Ray player because I have the HD-DVD add-on for the 360, but some movies I want are Blu-Ray only... is the PS3 my best bet? or is there a slightly cheaper good stand-alone player?... I also have my two HDMI inputs used up on my receiver... one for the 360, one for my cable box... so, even though I can run another HDMI cable to my TV, I would have to use optical audio for one of the 3 devices... any idea which is best to use that with then?...
thanks for any info.

PS3 is your best bet. You CAN find some BLu-ray players for cheaper (like this one
http://www.target.com/Sony-Blu-Ray-DVD-Player-BDPS300/dp/B000PALZE0/sr=1-1/qid=1196663041/ref=sr_1_1/601-1055513-4725701?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Asony%20blu-ray&page=1
However, the PS3 is your best bet as it is completly future proof and does pretty much everything now except decode DTS-HD MA, which unless your geko, you probably won't notice. ;)
And I think we should just copy the 360 forum and call this the "Blu-ray Software Thread"

Video wise its not been doing so well, only one site has given it five star video.. apparently the quality has gone down.. which doesnt make sense since they shot 2 and 3 at the same time using the same equipment.
Ill post more info on Tuesday.
And to the person asking about Mr/Mrs Smith
Not 100 percent sure, but I think all the dvd extras are ported over. Im getting it on Tuesday, and Ill post.
If a Mod stickies.. every week Ill update where to get the cheapest ones at.. as long as others are willing to help :)

In terms of blu-ray playback? Probably, but I'm not sure what they are. However, I use my Ps3 (60gb) as a blu-ray player and if I am missing something, I'm not aware of what it is.
In terms of gaming, it cannot play PS2 games. Only ps3 games and downloaded ps1 games, is my understanding.

Do you guys mostly buy your Blu Rays in B&M stores or online? I hardly see any new release sales and for me at least, $30 for a movie is a steep price. (On another note, is the difference between the quality of an HD movie that much of a difference from an upscaled DVD? Is the extra dough worth it to purchase a Blu Ray copy of a movie instead of the DVD copy?) I've seen some BOGO sales online but the selection is slim at best.
Thank you for your insight.

Yes, it is very much so worth it. The extra money gives you a higher audio and video quality.. which is greatly noticed.
Upconversion sucks. You are upconverting something that is 480p to 1080p, the image isnt crisp or clean.
Now take something that is already 1080p. Big difference.
Guess target's website is incorrect..

I but the majority of mine from amazon, but I also get a good amount of them from Best Buy (employee discount, but generally amazon still beats that).
When a DVD is past its first week of release they generally go up to $19.99. The $5 to $10 premium is well worth it.

I'm really torn to make the jump to Blu-Ray right now, or just hold myself in check for a little while longer... I'm guessing, if I take Superad as an example, the upconvertion of a regular DVD would still look pretty solid... decisions, decisions...

Good site for up to date news, esp. if you're purple. Like how they keep track of what's currently up for pre-order at Amazon. I don't read reviews for opinions about the movies themselves, but they do go into specs and which special features are HD specific.

Luckily for me I don't care about extras and just want to watch movies in HD. :D
Dom, the only extra extras HD-DVD gets are the IME ones since Blu-ray can't support them, which isn't Warners fault. They are just PiP and other stuff like that. However, Blu-ray did get some extras not on HD-DVD as well.
"Compared to the HD DVD, this Blu-ray edition gets the edge when it comes to standard extras (which feature full 1080p video and a TV Special that didn't make the HD DVD cut)"

With the way the season ratings have been going, dont expect 1/2 to follow suit anytime soon.

Anyone want to trade for Transporter 2 or Resident Evil: Apocalypse? I got them free from the PS3 mail-in, and I really don't want them; they're both still sealed. I'd be willing to trade for just about anything (sealed, un-sealed, doesn't matter). I would also probably be willing to part with Blazing Saddles too.

I snatched up the last Blu-ray copy of Superbad at my Circuit City. Got home and yeah it looks good. Not great by any means its 1:85:1 which is awesome because it fits my whole screen. I would probably give it a solid 4/5 for PQ, and for AQ probably a 3.5-4/5 I have my PS3 set-up with component for video to my projector @ 1080i and with optical for audio for Dolby Digital 5.1 so I can't account for the TrueHD lossless audio.
Definitely awesome though the extras on the main disc are awesome and I'm yet to even touch the bonus disc.

Ill never understand how ppl rate picture when they have 1080i.. and blu ray is meant for the highest possible.. and its 1080p.. and it seems redundant to rate audio when you cant get the highest possible quality..

Don't be mean Ice.
Most people can't tell the diff between 720p and 1080p.
There was even a blind test and a lot of advanced AV enthusiasts couldn't tell on 100" projection screens.
And it's acceptable to rate both the lossy and lossess tracks on movies.
They're different and have different ratings.
Lossless doesn't make it perfect.
And FWIW, I have a 1080p SXRD and can listen to lossless tracks.

Im not being mean, its the truth. Its like trying to rate an xbox 360 game in 720p, when you can only do 480p.
And a lot of people CAN tell the difference when you compare a movie side by side ^_^
ANd the audio is another thing. Thats like testing out 5.1 surround and you have 2.1 . Its completely different, different audio tracks mean completely different things!
At 30FPS I don't think there is a big difference between 1080i and 1080p on a 32in screen.

I have the first fantastic 4 sealed if you want to trade that for Transporter 2.
Thanks for the offer but I'm not interested (didn't really care for F4).
Here are some things I'm looking for:
American Psycho
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Good Night and Good Luck
Letters From Iwo Jima
Pirates: Curse of the Black Pearl
The Shining
Terminator
Terminator 2
Total Recall
Training Day
Sorry for threadjacking, I'll try to take this to my tradelist.

Those were supposed to be deals in the op? Amazon, FYE, WHV, and many other online sites have much better prices.
I'm still debating buying Harry Potter. Unfortunately, most 2.35 movies look like crap on my set (Westinghouse 32w6). I just got done watching At World's End and most of it looked like upscaled dvd. I'm counting down the days til tax return time. I'll hopefully find me a nice 60" 1080p set.

Harry Potter set I dont recommend.. get OOTP.. great looking movie.. the others are sub par.
SOS IS A GREAT LOOKING MOVIE! Its pretty far out there though.. Im not into anime AT ALL, but this movie was by far one of the best Ive seen in a long time.. try to find an FYE or a fry's near you for it though.. 39.99 is a damn steep tag for it.

The Potters are all above par visual quality. The newest one looks the best but all the others look very good as well. Maybe not 5 star quality but 4 at least. And they get better each movie. One probably looks the worst but still good quality in my opinion.

The gift set comes in a cooler box, you get some cool freebies as well. some pins, some collectors cards, and just all around better storage.. less space than 5 of the movies.

Audio wise 5/5. Compared to the normal TV audio you heard during the show, its a 500 percent improvement from the tv -_-V
PQ wise its also very good.. not as good as OOTP or SOS.. but still good none the less.
Its worth the 60 it was last week.. its back up to 79.99 now..
If you are a fan of the show and seen the other two season, get it.
If you havent seen the other two seasons.. dont see the third.. get the other two on dvd.. then get the blu ray.. otherwise.. yeah.
Sales numbers I havent seen yet.. But Im betting the Blu ray once again out sold the HD version of Potter -_-V
But look at what came out..
HD DVD
Harry potter Set / Each Individual
Bourne Ultimatium
Freedom Vol 3 ( I love these movies.. but there 20 minutes long for 40 bucks.. )
Blu Ray
Lost season 3
Rent
Harry potter Set / Each Individual
HSM 2
SOS
So HD may win for the HP set.. but its 50/50.. sales numbers arent releases till usually monday/tuesday..

Should be mentioned somewhere in the thread that problems have been reported with the HP Year 1-5 BD set.
The problem is that many copies of the BD set are shipping with HD-DVD copies of "Goblet of Fire". So anyone picking up the set, be sure to check your discs ASAP.

Sweet, a free HD-DVD w/Blu-Ray purchase.
I better check my BR set which I just received today, but I have both formats, so I'm not sure I'll need to do anything about it if that happens to me.
And a bit late for that discussion, but Children of Men was pretty good. At least, from a technical standpoint it's quite brilliant as there several complex action scenes that are just one long shot without any cuts.

Hmm, i didnt think Paprika looked that great, but it could mainly be to the windowboxing. Pretty much anything that isnt 1.79-1.85 looks like upscaled dvd on my 32" Westy.
I was watching At World's End on a 32" Sony at Best Buy and i couldnt believe the difference. I cant figure out why, I guess it has to do with the tv having 'whitish gray' blacks rather than black blacks, so the bars throw off the beauty of the picture. Even the 1.79 special features of the Simpsons Movie looked leaps and bounds greater than the movie itself. I've tried to mess with the brightness, contract & backlight, but the only way i can actually get black blacks is if i lower it so badly that i can barely make out the picture of the movie. I'm waiting for tax return time before i splurge on a new tv. I'm thinking a nice 60" sony, or something along those lines.
I know its not the best thing to watch with 'the guys' if youre trying to show off your set, but Planet Earth is a must have for reference material.

It looked fine on my 40" 1080p samsung. I did notice that at "just scan" there was some black border all around so it wasnt filling up the full screen with pixels but a quick change to 16:9 fixed that. It's my first real blu-ray movie so I guess I don't have anything to compare it to (other than Blazing Saddles). I didn't see any artifacting or what not so I figured that it was good. It's going to be tough to watch anything non-blu ray from now on :(
I don't know if I'll buy Tekkonkinkreet (maybe a rental) as I'm not sold on the animation in that one. I don't really like anime with that art style.

I went to FYE and traded them in. The funny thing was because they were still in the shrinkwrap the guy working there thought they were stolen and wouldn't take them at first. Man...to buy RE:Trilogy or not? Today's the last day of the Amazon 10% off bonus (I'm going to miss you, good buddy) - but I don't know if I want to own a copy of RE:Extinction (for any reason other than checking out profile 1.1 in action).
Shoot 'em up...now that I could get into.
Yeah it is going to suck to lose the Amazon 10% bonus. It was great to add that to the BOGO and B2G1.
Has anyone got there hands on Shoot'em Up yet?

Pretty soon you'll be able to get Amazon credit for dirt cheap if you dont mind flipping movies/games. All Blockbusters will be selling Amazon gift cards (stores in La Jolla, CA; and maybe other cities already are).
Current rate of exchange would be $9.99 + tax for every $33 in Amazon credit.

RE 2 - 4/5 , grain amount is large.. too distracting in some scenes.

It's simple.
The people who care about this are generally fans of HDM (high definition media). Since we are fans of HDM, we want HDM to become mainstream and that cannot happen when consumers continually get confused by two formats hence the celebration.

To hell with that, I wish the format wars would continue indefinitely, since the competition is the only reason they are undercutting each other left and right and having these BOGO sales in the first place.
Having 2 separate formats isn't any sort of inconvenience for me, as I can afford to have both players and the costs for the discs. But that doesn't mean I like the ridiculous costs for the discs...the war has been the best thing in driving prices down quickly.
Do any of you recall the early days of DVD, when studios were also giving out free discs with purchases of players or DVDs? Those offers disappeared when DVD became adopted by the masses. Sure, prices come down on DVDs and often times far quicker than previously, but if you think you're going to see cheap Blu Rays once that becomes the standard, or BOGO sales like we've been having, you are sorely mistaken.
You won't find a new release under $25, and 'discounted' older discs will be $19.99 or $15 at best. Maybe $10 at the very best for Black Friday or rare specials where they try to clear out a glut.

This is good for HD media in general. Unlike video games where more than one format can coexist when it comes to a mainstream movie format like DVD the masses want one format and only one.
With the exception of HDDVD pulling a miracle at this point the PS3 did its job and it paid off for Sony. Now they can concentrate on making the PS3 about games first and foremost.

Warner stops support for HD DVD in May 2008 supposedly. So once those discs sell out at that point that's it. There's always the possibility of some other studio going neutral (I doubt exclusive) to HD DVD if Toshiba throws enough money around, but I would guess it's just a matter of time before Universal goes neutral or jumps ship completely.
Sony and Panasonic and possibly others had to have paid huge money to Warner for this to happen, like what happened with Paramount. This is probably the deathblow to HD DVD.

Having two formats really is stupid. I cannot count how many times people have come up to me in Best Buy asking me what's the difference simply because I was checking out Blu-Ray movies (I'm not even an employee!).
As for sales, I'm sure there will be fewer BOGO's, but there definitely will be sales. DVD, in its infancy had sales and price reductions even though there was no other competitor. Sony knows from all their BOGO's that there simply isn't demand for the media at $30 or even $25.

Apple set to ship Macs with Blu-ray support - report
By Slash Lane (news@appleinsider.com)
Published: 10:00 AM EST Apple Inc. at this month's Macworld Expo will will outline a high-definition video strategy that will see its weight thrown further behind Sony Corp's Blu-ray DVD format as opposed to Toshiba's HD-DVD, according to one Wall Street analyst.
In a report issued to clients early Thursday morning, American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu cited sources who say the Cupertino-based Mac maker, which already occupies a seat on the Blu-ray consortium, is set to begin shipping some of its computers with support for the next-generation DVD format.
"We believe this is a key announcement as current Macs ship with the DVD format and Sony gains a strong ally in Blu-ray," the analyst told clients. He added that Disney, for which Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is a Director, is a firm supporter of Blu-ray, while rival Microsoft Corp. has placed most of its eggs in the HD-DVD basket.
However, Wu hedged his bets somewhat, saying there is "a smaller chance Apple may use a combo Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive to ensure full compatibility and not get involved in the format wars."
Apple, which markets a complete line of HD content creation tools for consumers and professionals, announced in March of 2005 that it had joined (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/05/03/10/apple_joins_blu_ray_disc_association_board.html) Blu-ray Disc Association. Since then, however, the company has observed much of the ongoing battle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD from the sidelines, choosing to remain indifferent in the fight for control of the next-generation high def format.
The Mac maker during the first quarter of 2008 is expected to introduce a significant overhaul (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/10/18/apple_to_fire_up_penryn_based_mac_pros.html) to its Mac Pro professional workstations, which are expected to be among the first systems from the company to include drives capable of supporting the Blu-ray format, sources close to AppleInsider and other Apple news publications have said (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/12/06/briefly_dell_at_best_buy_mac_pro_and_10_5_2_at_mac world.html).

Sure as hell does, no other format can come and get any big studio support after this fiasco. They will probably move to blu ray if hd dvd dies and no company is going to want to support yet another format trying to make themselves. If anything at all a new disc for storage will come but not movie studio support. People are slowly moving to HD and blu ray will pick up sales maybe slowly but there will be no other competition to keep it from a success.

Bingo, just because they have the potential to corner the market on high definition movies doesn't mean high definition movies will become the standard. Why do you rebuy old movies? you probably rebought movies on dvd you might get a few on blu ray? New movies are still being made and as time goes by they can drop the msrp to like $19.99 and if stores do a good job making it seem like dvd is a waste when you can buy a blu ray, like comparison videos then it can sell well. With only one market though it doesn't matter how fast it takes anymore if it takes 5 years to take off it doesn't have competition to be afraid of. Its just hoping as more hd tvs are being bought people will want to use it.

I get most of my Blu-Rays at $15 or less and a trip to the movie theater costs me $9.50. Going to the theater is definitely cheaper, but for 15 bucks I can watch it as many times as I'd like and until I can find a DLP theater around SoCal, I get a better picture at home.

So true... they take alot longer to produce too...
The advantages from VHS to DVD in terms of quality of image, sound, space taken up were amazing... comparing it to when people switched from tapes to cds...
There are superior "cd" type formats for example... can you say SA-CD... brought to you by Sony I believe... that and the dvd audio never caught on with the masses
But while it is not THAT bad with the newer hd disc formats, most people Ive talked about it with dont even seem to care about it... and I dont know too many people with huge hdtvs that would benefit the most from the switch... most people are so clueless about hdtv anyway that anything other than dvds scares them. (Think of the people who buy hdtvs who think that is ALL they need to have hd picture)

Good point zman. I too know alot of people who think just because they have a HDTV everything is now HighDef. I work with alot of over 50 crowd, and I do have to say they surprise me sometimes with what they know. I have had several ask me which format to buy. I have also had a few ask me why anybody would buy a stand alone BR player when you can get a PS3 for about the same price. So there are some informed people out there. Maybe with this news being plastered all over the net, and with retail stores probably fazing out HD, more people will be informed. Maybe.

All I know is that Bill Limba--I mean, Hunt (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#itsover)--will have a raging hard-on for the remainder of this very, very young year. What a zealot.
Suddenly, getting that Toshiba HD-DVD player on Amazon last week for $179.99 (plus the ten free discs when it's all said and done) makes ominous sense. 'Congrats', Sony. After so many tries, you finally got your way. Now people might actually have a halfway decent motivation to buy your game console before 2010! EDIT: Seriously, will The Dark Knight be the masses' 'killer app' for the PS3 in 2008? That doesn't seem that far-fetched now.
EDIT Dos: And now New Line is "Bru-Ray" exclusive. Cue "Taps", please.

When DVD hit it's stride, VHS was much more expensive to produce.
I didn't say anything about production, I meant price-wise. When movies were still being released on both formats, the VHS copy was always $4-5 cheaper to buy. Eventually, people stopped buying VHS tapes because
a) people finally bought a DVD player (they started at over $400, then dropped to a more acceptable price over time)
b) VHS tapes weren't being made anymore
Eventually, everyone will have to own an HDTV. Old TV sets will die, replaced by newer technology. Even ATSC signals are going the way of the Dodo, that range is going to be used for other things. It's progress, plain and simple. Blu-Ray may seem complicated now, but how many people used to complain that they couldn't set their VCR's clock? Those are the same type of people that don't get BR. BR isn't even that complicated, the media type and hardware is practically a DVD player.
Prices will drop over time, and eventually BR will be replaced by... who knows, but guarantted that people will bitch that they don't like it/don't get it/it's too expensive when it happens.

To hell with that, I wish the format wars would continue indefinitely, since the competition is the only reason they are undercutting each other left and right and having these BOGO sales in the first place.
While I don't want the "war" to continue, I have to agree with your BOGO comment. We wont see the likes of such deals anywhere once a format is finally chosen.

Um, would you mind telling me where you heard this interesting tidbit? Because, if I am not mistaken, this violates all sorts of federal laws.

If MS is smart, they will dump HDDVD right now.
Ms never fully exclusively supports HD-DVD. What they really support is Digital Downloads. There is no exclusivity contract in place with MS and HD-DVD.

Even though I just (and I mean JUST) bought an HD-DVD player, assuming Blu-Ray 'wins' within the next 12-24 months, does that mean it'll stave off Microsoft's highly-desired 'download-only' scenario for at least another five years? If so, it's an inconvenience I'm willing to deal with for the long-term benefits of keeping hard copies and ACTUALLY OWNING MOVIES in the pipeline for years to come.

I really don't care. I still just want a quality, affordable combo (BR/HD) player. They both use the same laser, right? It doesn't seem like it'd be very hard. They have computer drives that play both, why not standalone?
The lasers are in fact very different. There's really no reason to pursue a combo drive from the perspective of the CE manufacturers. It would be like selling consumers a DVD standalone that also plays VHS as well as Beta.

I'm about to go Blu, since HD is about to be annihilated in a few short months, is there any other deals out there for free Blu-rays for the PS3 outside of the five free mail-in offer one? Like I know at Best Buy you get 5 free instantly if you buy a certain player, but are there any similar somewhere but with a PS3, say the 80GB model?

Everyone's really making far too much out of this whole thing really
In terms of movies? Quite possibly. Very possibly, in fact.
However, one thing that truly matters is that this is almost damn sure (you never can tell with Nintendo) the last generation of consoles that will use DVD technology in their consoles. If HD DVD is killed off, then MS and Nintendo will either have to stay with DVD (which is *beginning* to show its limitations already, if just barely), go with BD (and make Sony money for every MS/Nintendo console and software sold), or spend R&D trying to make their own proprietary disc format (GD-ROM, anyone? That worked out real well ).
Now, MS or Nintendo could make a DLC-only console, but if you thought Sony including the Blu-Ray in the PS3 was a stupendously bad idea (for their gaming marketshare), wait until someone tries to go the pure digital distribution route. With that in mind, it's almost a lock that the Next iteration of the Xbox and Wii will use BD technology. And, knowing that, it's a big fuckin' deal for Sony.
Additionally, just like DVD encroached on VHS' territory in store shelves, retailers and buyers will do the same. YOU may not want to buy BD, but if they want to sell it to you, they may prematurely reduce DVD's shelfspace, bring down BD prices, and give them the bulk of the shelf space. People will still buy it. You know better than to think consumers will not buy what's on store shelves if it's the bulk of what's there.
Moreover, since DVD sales are down 4.5% on the year, studios may want to move to BD even faster in order to gain sales via people rebuying their collection.

Wikipedia has all the gory details, and sorry I meant NTSC. ATSC is the newer digital standard replacing analog NTSC signals by 2009, mandated by your country's FCC. Free-to-air analog stations are almost extinct!
Of course, free-to-air digital is better anyway, but you need a compatible HDTV to get it.
Cool, 3:10 to Yuma is this week. Never did see the original, so at least it won't cloud my judgment of what's been generally well received with this remake.
Haven't seen any movement on my amazon pre-order yet, though.
Edit: hm, I'm wondering if I should just sell my copy of RE Apocalypse (part of the 5 free deal) and get the Trilogy. Kinda regret selecting it now. :/

or just buy the trilogy and hawk that version, either works. The trilogy is a serious must buy though.
Sunshine is a great movie.. kinda turns halfway through though ^_^
And Im excited about 3:10 to Yuma.. loved the original.. and I am a huge Christian Bale fan ever since American Psycho. Gotta love Huey lewis and the news.

Looks like the PS3 is getting "BD-Live" in a future updated. (http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=813)
At the Sony booth, they are showcasing two new prototype BD-Live players. The Sapphire 3 and 4 will both be Profile 2.0. Sony also has indicated that the PS3 will get a BD-Live upgrade sometime in the future.

I just saw that the new BD-Live discs will allow you to upload the film to a memory stick and/or the PSP.
Been wondering when they would do this (offer home version and portable version on one disc).
Now they just need to start doing it with games...
