Want one that can handle any region, and I don't care about other formats (DIVX, etc.). Find me a deal!

The Philips DVP3140 (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP3140-Compact-DVD-Player/dp/B000N23JL2/ref=pd_bbs_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1196879178&sr=8-4) may be a candidate. It's $36, and is apparently region-hackable (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks?dvdplayer=DVP3140&hits=50&Search=Search).
I have the DVP642, and that worked fine for Region 2 PAL titles, after punching in the code.

Want to watch the "Massacre At Central High" bootleg that I have and I want to get a hold of "Mystics In Bali" so that I can see that crazy penanggalan.

Is there a site that says which players can be made region free? I have an older Samsung that still works pretty well, but I'm not sure if I can switch it to R2 to watch some of my imported movies or not.

Try the CyberHome DVD player (CH-300 or CH-300S?). They can usually be found for under $40. Then you have to input certain button presses on the remote.

Yes.

Go to DVD Hacks on the left hand side under lists.
You can input your player's make / model and then search.

Just beware on the Cyberhomes though.
They do not last long in terms of durability.

Your mileage may vary, of course. I've got a CH-DVD 300 in the basement, and it's still working perfectly after several years of ownership.

I'll second that. Mine might be a slightly older model of this player but once you put the code in it works great. I think I still had some trouble with PAL discs but like I said I think mine is a slightly older model of that same player. And it plays DiVx!!!

I had one of the dvp models for a couple of years hacked region free. It plays most everything i throw at it including divx and multiregion. They sell them at walmart as well.
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5584897 this is the upconvert model for 38 bucks. Probably can pick it up at your local store that way you can make sure it works.

Oh I agree.
Mine crapped out after three years but the one I got my mother still working after 6+ years.
The 300 model I got for a would be girlfriend when Cyberhome first hit the market lasted 2 weeks. I bought the Radio Shack extended warrantee and they had to keep replacing it until she lost the warrantee.
Overall, I think the Philips is a better build and at less than $50, a great machine.

Ended up going with the Philips. Didn't have one at my local Wal-Mart, but one of my loyal minions picked one up for me and I shall have it in a few days. Thanks to all for your help!
