 Whaa?!? Seems like there were tons of unoriginal BS entries people sent in. Out of the six names listed, the only mildly creative/catchy names were Depths and S.O.S.

Clearly, they were not looking for "creative" entries. I suspect they were just going to call it "Shooter" regardless.

Looks like PixelJunk Shooter will be on 1up's GameNight this week, so I'll post a link when they post it on 1up if you want to see it in action. I'm assuming that that means it'll be out soon if they're willing to let 1up show it off.

I thought they already had a pretty polished up demo @ E3? Maybe they are just playing that.

Last I heard, the release date was supposed to be last part of this year. Maybe Fall/Winter?

FriskyTanuki
07-26-2009, 02:46 PM
The Comic-Con version of the game has an entirely new area and weapon, so I'd imagine that they'll be playing that this week. I didn't say "soon" as in a week or two, but by September or so since this is a downloadable game and those never come out as soon as you'd think they would.

Finally got around to playing Eden (bought it when it was on sale) and it's been a lot of fun. From what I've seen of shooter it seems to be in the same kind of vein, action-puzzler. Anyone know if the game has time limits? That's the only thing I've found pretty annoying about Eden.

Has Pixeljunk Monsters gone on sale at all this year? I missed the $5 sale back in 2008 and am wondering if it'll go on sale again.

FriskyTanuki
09-30-2009, 07:44 PM
I don't think it's been on sale since last summer. If you have a PSP, the Deluxe version might be up your alley since it has new content and the encore add-on that's been worked into the core game a lot better than it was for the PS3 version.

December 10th for Europe. Probably same for USA.

It took me roughly 6 hours to run through all the levels.

FriskyTanuki
12-11-2009, 05:20 PM
The first episode isn't all that long since it's mostly straightforward, but the second episode's levels take longer for me because of the new suits that make me want to spend time filling the level with lava or ice while my bonus score is dwindling.

It would be awesome if there was a Garry's Mod-type mode where you can set up obstacles and mess around with suits to do whatever you want to do.

Is the counter for crystals needed until the next reward broken for anyone else? It's always ?? for me and that seems odds for an obvious thing like that.

I noticed that Shooter uses the in-game XMB screenshot feature, which is good for me.

ChibiJosh

The "reward" is the next part of the level opening up, so if there is a ?? It means that you have that whole level open. I think, anyway.

I don't know. I played through it with a couple friends, and those levels with 3 players were chaos. I actually don't remember the gimmicks from any of the other levels besides the gravity switching one.

The drilling machine went crazy due to the magnetic fluid, so it attacked you, obviously. Then the monster one of the special miners warned you about swallows you up, Star Wars-style.

They're definitely doing an Encore pack since the ending leads right into it and the "to be continued" message shouldn't give you any doubt.

Well…what a great GDC (http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/gdc10/) we had. We spent most of our time in Sony’s Blogger’s Lounge (http://foursquare.com/venue/1450223) previewing PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap for the various press people who came around to visit. And I’m here to make it official and let everyone know that we will be releasing PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap on the PlayStation Network (http://us.playstation.com/psn/index.htm) this Spring.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4065/4443174613_bef0cfbae6.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4443174613/)

So, to recap for those who haven’t seen the various blogged reports on it, PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap is a bit of a fan service really – we went back to the original Racers (http://us.playstation.com/games-and-media/games/pixeljunk-racers-ps3.html) and added Trophies, but we didn’t want to just stop there (just adding the bare minimum isn’t really what we do). So we added a whole new feature – ghost attack. What this does is record how you played whenever you register a new score on the high score tables, so anyone else in the world (including your friends of course) can play against you, trying to best your score.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4054/4443946630_2d7cf3e585.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4443946630/)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2771/4443946450_2b398feb65_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4443946450/) http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4068/4443946378_e4f6d13a21_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4443946378/)

On top of that we made the single-player tournament a little easier to complete, so you can open up the ghost attack and various party modes even more quickly (and of course gain those Trophies more easily too!).

Just to go on the record – this game *isn’t* really a racing game. It’s as much a racing game as, say, Rally-X was back in the day, really. It is a slot-car based arcade game with lots of fun, wacky modes and ideas in it, and as a result is excellent fun if you get a few people round. And if you can’t get a few people around, the ghost mode opens up a ton of competition with your friends on the ‘net.

Now that I’ve covered off on 2nd Lap, I’m also here to deliver more news to the PixelJunk (http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/pixeljunk/) fans out there. This Spring, we will also be making PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe (http://us.playstation.com/games-and-media/games/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe-psp.html) available on UMD! So, for those of you who prefer to have a hard copy of one of your favorite games … you are in luck. The UMD version of PixelJunk Monsters (http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/pixeljunk-monsters/) Deluxe will be available at participating retail outlets begnning April 27 for $19.99.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/4443188345_3f4f37c0bd.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4443188345/)

For more information on the PixelJunk (http://pixeljunk.jp/) franchise, please check out our blog posts here (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/03/26/see-how-pixeljunk-is-made-inside-q-games-kyoto-base/) and here (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/09/28/tgs-2009-download-pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe-this-thursday/). Continue to check back in with us for more information on 2nd Lap and everything PixelJunk here on the PS Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/)!It's good to see that PJMD's appearance on Gamefly was indeed correct about a UMD version of the game.

FriskyTanuki
04-30-2010, 02:58 PM
It's pretty good for a party/mini-game collection kind of game with a good variety of modes, though it was a bit too hard and they really hit their stride on the three games that followed it to make Racers look decent at best by comparison. I'd say it's a ~6.5 before what 2nd Lap is supposed to fix and add, which could easily bump it up to a 7.5 or so if they are done well.

I picked up Shooter finally because of the sale. I like it a lot... So far. I finished the first stage. Think there are two more. Not as tough for me as the other in the PJ series so perhaps that is why I am liking it more. At least at this point, haha. I know each stage is going to get tougher.

I dont really like Shooter and to see a sequel announced is a bit disappointing. But not nearly as disappointing as buying PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe and realizing IT IS THE EXACT SAME as PS3 version. Exact waves, exact levels exact strategy. What a crock of shit. All they did was add like 5 new levels on some island

FriskyTanuki
05-17-2010, 04:17 PM

smiggity

It was really an impulse buy since I recently got all PJM trophies and was looking for more PJM. But it sucks since it was also in my group account, so I already had it I guess. Still no wonder its only ten bucks, as remote play is basically same thing. Maybe PJM2 will come out some day

FriskyTanuki
05-17-2010, 08:45 PM
Not really. They rebalanced all of the extra content (Encore and new islands) so the entire campaign plays like it was all made at the same time and online co-op through the game or the PS3.

smiggity
05-18-2010, 02:57 AM
Ive used the exact same tower placement on numerous levels...Its not rebalanced at all.

FriskyTanuki
05-18-2010, 03:19 AM
I'm not talking about the first few levels. I'm talking about the way the extra islands are integrated into the campaign, as the encore island required you to re-earn the abilities you already unlocked on the main island on the PS3, so it's not as hard on the PSP. Those extra islands now feel more like they're a natural evolution from the main island in difficulty than extra levels that were added in much later.

Hoping they add some ship customization abilities (even if cosmetic) to Part 2/encore of PixelJunk shooter as find it kinda hard to get motivated to find all the gems throughout the levels. That and the ability to assign "spin" to a face button as it was so fucking annoying swishing the stick to execute that move.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/18/pixeljunk-shooter-2-in-full-production/

Shooter 2's been announced:
Well, I hope everyone has recovered from the PixelJunk sale bonanza (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/04/29/playstation-store-update-134/) we had last month – as far as I could tell people were buying up PixelJunk titles by the tenfold which is great!

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4046/4617036217_ce3e92a8d3.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4617036217/)

For those that haven’t already heard, PixelJunk Shooter 2 is in full production, full steam ahead, anchors away and all that… commotion to that order. I can’t say much about it now, but it will have some features that are new to the PixelJunk series (http://pixeljunk.jp/) in general and will be bigger than the first game! We’re busy implementing all the ideas that were left on the drawing board for the first game to make Shooter 2 as jam-packed full of crazy fun as possible… I’m pretty sure we won’t make a Shooter 3 because everything and the kitchen sink (probably quite literally) is going into Shooter 2. Keep your eyes glued to the Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/) (in-between playing PixelJunk games of course) for more info on this in the future!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3416/4617036083_a8e1fee926_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4617036083/) http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4617650172_c9feb5bc1c_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/4617650172/)

And for those who still aren’t sure about the awesomeness PixelJunk Shooter (http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/pixeljunk-shooter/) really (no, really!) is, we’re going to release a free demo of one of my favourite levels in the game on May 25th. The level has explosive gas, magma, water, tons of cool enemies, volcanic eruptions and you can wreak all kinds of havoc with the fluid physics. This will push you over the edge to get the game!

When did you ever actually need to spin though?

FriskyTanuki
05-18-2010, 08:23 PM
The main reason to use it was to cool down your ship when you were around magma. Spinning was good to pull in those star coin things through obstacles without having to move around and it also reflected shots from enemies. It was easy to pull off though, as I'd do it all the time even when it wasn't necessary.

Some nice details on PixelJunk Shooter 2:
Online Multiplayer Gameplay – The game features a competitive online multiplayer mode, with a distinct rule-set and many specifically designed battle arena stages.
Ghost Players – PixelJunk™ Shooter 2 contains an advanced Score Attack mode over the original game. Player ‘ghosts’ can be stored online for each personal best performance and players can choose to challenge a ghost from the ranking table or from their friends list, and fight for the high score.
New Virtual Co-Op Play – PixelJunk™ Shooter 2 introduces “Ghost Docks,” where a scripted ghost will be called upon to complete a path and certain tasks by itself. The player will need to utilize and work with the ghost in order to proceed.
Distinctive Visuals and Music – Features several unique worlds with stylishly designed graphics and brand new music from High Frequency Bandwidth.

New site for Racers 2nd Lap mentions the features and such of the new add-on, which mentions that it's getting support for screenshots and in-game XMB soundtracks in addition to the other features that are mentioned above. There's also a new trailer on the site, too.

So… better late than never right? Yes, finally PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/18/pixeljunk-racers-2nd-lap-coming-to-psn-this-spring-pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe-on-umd/) is coming to PSN (http://us.playstation.com/psn/index.htm) and we’ve had a lot of fun fiddling with the original Racers to bring it up to date with the other titles in the PixelJunk series. Instead of going back and just adding trophies we decided to go through and give it a difficulty overhaul — making the game far easier than it used to be (we used to make these games pretty tough back in the day eh). It is still a pleasant challenge of course but not the insurmountable cliff face it used to be.

Trailer: http://www.viddler.com/explore/sceablog/videos/1144/0

Let me be the first to say this, but PixelJunk Racers (http://us.playstation.com/games-and-media/games/pixeljunk-racers-ps3.html) is *not* a racing game – it is more like a PixelJunk reaction-based party game based loosely on slot-car racing. There are all kinds of different rules to play with, for example in one rule all you do is hold the trigger down to “puff up” your car, release the trigger and your car flies along the track like a balloon, the goal is to get as far as you can without hitting anything. We support up to 7 controllers and it makes for a superb game to play with friends around. In another mode you can only keep your speed up by “eating” the other cars (by hitting them and destroying them). For anyone who enjoys fun rules with a bit of a driving motif, this should be right up your alley. It is one of our favourite games in the PixelJunk series — it’s a personal favourite of mine and the one that kickstarted it all off.

On top of this we added a new global scoreboard called Driver’s Points which add up as you play the online score attack modes. This should give everyone a nice long-lasting challenge, especially as to enhance this further we have added ghosts of the other players in the high score rankings that you can play against. You can only select ghosts from either your friends’ list or from the other players near you in the high score table so as you go up through the ranks you should be able to see some incredibly skilled play from some of the best players out there. It makes for a very addictive challenge.

Before I forget, 2nd Lap is totally FREE to existing owners of Racers, and you get to keep the original (difficult) Racers for posterity (it doesn’t overwrite it). PlayStation Plus (http://us.playstation.com/psn/playstation-plus/index.htm) subscribers will be able to get this upgrade a whole two weeks before everyone else too, with also a 25% discount (those lucky folks!) Regular PSN users will soon catch up though, two weeks isn’t too long to wait I hope – it will be available on Aug 24th for just $6.99!

Whether you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber or not, if you’re an existing owner of Racers, be sure to get the FREE upgrade to 2nd Lap. All you have to do is click the FREE button on the 2nd lap product page, add to cart and install… that’s it! For those that are new to Racers, you will automatically be upgraded to 2nd lap at the time of purchase.

Anyway, it’s time for me to get back to work finishing up PixelJunk Shooter 2 (http://us.playstation.com/games-and-media/games/pixeljunk-shooter-2-ps3.html) (looking pretty cool btw!), I’ll be back in a little while to talk it up and perhaps even to discuss our latest collaboration with Baiyon (http://baiyon.com/english/) of PixelJunk Eden (http://us.playstation.com/games-and-media/games/pixeljunk-eden-ps3.html) fame, so see you soon!Seems that 2nd Lap essentially replaces the original Racers and it's cool that they're not charging for the update nor increasing the price of Racers with its release.

PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap is out now. It doesn't quite replace the original game, so you have to start over in the Solo Tournament mode.

The new Ghost Attack mode is kind of cool, though it seems like it needs more people playing it to work well, as I'd beat a score and then be told to race against myself. I like the video capture option, as it offers to save each race for you to the hard drive or upload to Youtube depending on where you set as default in the options.

Anyone logged into the Japanese PSN store this week since PJS2 came out? I see they have a section for it, but it looks like they have have a demo for it, where the US store does not. I can't tell if it's a demo or just a gameplay video. Can anyone confirm? :)

PixelJunk Sidescroller, the newest PixelJunk game, has been announced:
http://image.gamespotcdn.net/gamespot/images/2011/156/PixelJunkSideScroller_55087_screen.jpg

Today, Sony announced that Q Games will be returning to its PSN-staple PixelJunk series this summer with PixelJunk SideScroller.

Billed as a "retro side-scrolling shooter," PixelJunk SideScroller has been built in the vein of classic arcade shoot-'em-ups, as players traverse levels while avoiding a spray of bullets. The game will also incorporate a number of elements from the PixelJunk Shooter series, including its hazardous fluid mechanic.

PixelJunk SideScroller will also feature a swath of upgrade options for in-game weaponry, in addition to hidden power-ups. Q Games also said that PixelJunk SideScroller will have a number of adjustable difficulty levels, as well as multiplayer action for up to two.

Sony did not offer a price for PixelJunk SideScroller. However, when PixelJunk Shooter 2 arrived to a positive critical reception in March, it carried a sticker price of $10.It looks nice, but I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't jump into a completely new genre. That it's coming out this summer seems to suggest that it benefited from being made during PJS2's development. I hope the next game isn't too far behind.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/07/05/pixeljunk-shooter-2-patch-is-live-now/

A new PixelJunk Shooter 2 patch is live:

There was a bug where some enemies would spawn right on top of you giving you that awesome “insta-death” you really don’t want in a game… well, we fixed it!
The online connectivity has been tuned to allow you to hook up with other players much more easily. Try it out!
If you get matched against a higher ranking player you get a nice large cash bonus (Q space bucks of course) if you win! This gives you a big incentive to challenge yourself more when you get matched up against someone who seems better than you. Hint: stay calm and use strategy, you can definitely take them!
We added an option to the pause screen that lets you take a break in the middle of a stage and come back later to finish it off. So when your mom calls you to the dinner table just choose that option, go eat your dinner *and* be nice to the environment by switching off your PS3!
Even if you kill a few survivors and get a game over screen you can “continue” – your score will be reset, but if you are just exploring and trying to get as far as you can this feature stops you from being thrown back to the start of a stage just because a few puny survivors happen to have gotten in the way of your missiles.
A message on the pause screen lets you know if there are any diamonds still hidden in the current screen. This is very handy when you are searching out that last diamond in order to unlock the awesomely cool secret last stage!
Acid walls aren’t as nasty anymore – we gave the giant alien whose insides you are exploring some antacid and he’s feeling a lot better now

http://www.psnstores.com/2011/07/pixeljunk-monsters-coming-to-browsers/

Good News: There's a new PixelJunk Monsters game in the works.
Bad News: It's not coming to the PS3, PSP, or Vita.
I was at Casual Connect today here in rainy, overcast Seattle. The main reason for dragging my butt across Lake Washington to venture into the city was a talk given by Jesse Venbrux, a designer at Q-Games. If you recall early last week, I posted a story about Dylan Cuthbert teasing a new game on Google+ (http://www.psnstores.com/2011/07/rumor-q-games-working-on-a-game-set-in-pixeljunk-monsters-universe/). Well it was revealed today, and I was correct in it being a PixelJunk Monsters title.

PixelJunk Monsters is being redesigned for the social network platforms, read Facebook and the like. There are lots of changes being made and I will do my best to give you an overview on this free to play browser game.

http://media.psnstores.com/images/qgames/surprise.png (http://media.psnstores.com/images/qgames/surprise.png)

First off, the game is no longer linear. Now each island is a grid based world. Once you beat a stage you unlock the surrounding grids. These grids then need to be worked, at the cost of a shovel, so that you can turn them into a level. The shovels are given to you over time, much like in many social network games. If you play Tiny Tower on iOS, the shovels are like the bucks. There are also different types of grid tiles, like the tiki shop, ports (used to travel to new islands at the cost of shovels), volcanos and more.

On the gameplay side, things have changed drastically. Monsters now only have a single path to travel and it is drawn on the level for you to see. A new mechanic has also been added, seeds. With these seeds you can plant trees anywhere on the map. I believe they are dropped much like gems and you are given a fair amount at the start of stages. Tikiman will no longer dance automatically on towers, you have to hold the mouse button down. But you can now grab coins with just using your mouse’s cursor. Levels have also been made more bite sized.

There are also social aspects, as you might imagine, that are being worked on. Shown to us today was a crown system. If you have the highest score on a stage amongst your friends, you get a crown on it. This goes in with the more competitive aspect that they are focusing on. At the moment, co-op play has been removed as the developers at Q-Games are trying to figure out how it will work on a space, such as Facebook, where users aren’t always logged in at the same time.

There should be a press release coming out soon, so I will update anything I missed once that comes out. My phone was dying so this is the only photo I managed to grab from the presentation. Ask any questions you have as I am sure I forgot something and I will try to answer them.

Bumping this up since PixelJunk Sidescroller is out now for $9.99 ($7.99 for PS+). Played through the first two sectors and it's fun so far. It's definitely a challenging game, but casual is a nice starting point and the checkpoints/unlimited continues can help the less-skilled get through the game.
