Update 2/25:
Here's the press release:
DC Comics, Warner Premiere, Warner Home Video (http://www.mania.com/57543.html#) and Warner Bros. Animation have collaborated to create a unique Batman experience in Batman: Gotham Knight. The all-new, original movie will arrive July 8, 2008 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Order due date is June 3, 2008. The original movie will also be available OnDemand and Pay-per-View as well as available for download on the same day as release date, July 8, 2008.
Batman: Gotham Knight is a fresh and exciting new entry into the Batman mythos, spinning out of a 40-year history in animation including the Emmy®-winning Batman: The Animated Series, widely considered a pivotal moment in American animation. A cross section of distinguished creators, award winning producers, and acclaimed writers weave six interlocking stories that reveal Bruce Wayne’s journey to Dark Knight, each with stylish art from some of the world’s most revered animation visionaries.
Batman: Gotham Knight was headed by an impressive list of directors who have brought their distinctly different anime styles to the classic Batman character. The production was divided among three renowned studios – Studio 4ºC, Production I.G and Madhouse – and included the truly inimitable visions of directors Shojiro Nishimi, Futoshi Higashide, Hiroshi Morioka, Yasuhiro Aoki and Toshiyuki Kubooka. With stories written by several of the most talented writers of film, comic books, and animation, including Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter Josh Olson (A History of Violence), David S. Goyer (Batman Begins), Emmy®-winner Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series), Jordan Goldberg (Associate Producer, The Dark Knight), and award-winning comics writers Greg Rucka and Brian Azzarello, Batman: Gotham Knight presents thrilling new adventures of Batman that spotlight several of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains, including the fearsome Scarecrow, the freakish Killer Croc and the unnerving marksman known as Deadshot. Batman: Gotham Knight is produced by Emma Thomas (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), Michael Uslan & Benjamin Melniker (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), Toshi Hiruma and Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series).
Batman: Gotham Knight will be available on DVD for $24.98 SRP. There will also be a 2-disc Special Edition DVD available for $29.98 SRP which contains additional bonus features. All the content from the 2-disc Special Edition DVD will be available on Blu-ray Disc for $34.99 SRP.

Audio Commentary - Featuring the filmmakers of Gotham Knight.
Widescreen (1.78:1)

“Batman: Gotham Knight explores an exciting moment between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight,” said Paul Levitz, DC Comics President and Publisher, “and takes our fans on a very different visual trip through Gotham and Batman’s life. We’re extremely proud of this project, and look forward to adding to the momentum our DC Universe Animated Original Movie program has been building.”

Kind of sounds similar to the Animatrix.
Now comes the dilemma I always have when buying DVDs. Should I buy them as they come out, or wait for a huge boxset in 8 years?

Screw that, I'm hoping the original voices from the movie; Bale, Ledger, etc. sign on to do the voice overs for the animated film.

Bale doesn't honestly do that great of a gruff sort of voice to me. Sounds like he's trying to hard, kevin conroy has that kind of voice nailed.
Ah well, seems the bruce timm universe is pretty much dead. They get him to do these glorified movie promos, but nothing else.

I really lilked Bale's voice in Batman. It sounded like he was very obviously trying to mask his voice so people couldn't compare it against wayne's. And I think it worked perfectly. He rasped it to cover up IMO.

i hope this trend w/bats leads to a better overall respect for M & D.C. characters re: movies/DVD
good story, good Director, good talent... everything else after that
i want a re-do on DD/Elektra, especially if it's in a dark and more authentic animated-verse like this.

Although I know JL: NF is coming to HD-DVD... price wise I might just get the standard def dvd edition. The JL/JLU looks amazing on SD dvd's. So I am not sure if I am going to pay 30 dollars for something that looks just as good as the sd edition.

For those unaware, there is a short featurette for this collection at the beginning of Appleseed: Ex Machina. It is very similar to the one posted earlier in this thread, but either a) has some new scenes or b) is the same one and I simply didn't pay enough attention to the first.

I was surprised about this too...you would think Bale would do the voice since he is the new batman....but I guess fans demanded Conroy to do voice for the animated version of batman.
josh_animebum

While it would have been cool to have Bale do the character, since the stories take place within that universe, I find whenever I see Batman animated now after hearing Conroy do the voice for like 10 years, its seems weird to me to hear anyone else (I actually enjoyed most of the performances in Justice League: New Frontier, but whenever Jeremy Sisto's Batman spoke it totally threw me off).
So yeah, couple with the fact that I am both an anime fan and a Batman fan, I can't wait for this. Although I hope that now that WB has given up on HDDVD the BluRay will have uncompressed audio.
Also I wonder who Will Friedle will voice. He gave a great run as Terry in Batman Beyond, but I don't see them including that chacter in the new Bale universe. My guess is that he will play a relatively small role probably as a nod to fans.

Glad to see that the SRP for the DVD is 19.99 versus the original post which states $24.99. I'll be getting this to watch with my son since he loves Batman, but this may push him to want me to take him to The Dark Knight (he's 8) which I'm not sure if he's ready for.

I'm not looking to bring up a parenting debate or anything (since you probably wouldn't be wondering if your son is ready for Dark Knight if you were irresponsible), but I just wanted to make sure you realized that this DVD feature is going to be rated PG-13 just like The Dark Knight will likely be. If you've seen the video previews for this upcoming collection, it seems like it will definitely deserve the higher than PG rating.

Completely agree!

Conroy is a great Batman, but this is a prequel to the Dark Knight, and they should of gotten Bale. Still, they did get the second best person for this particular DVD.

Same here. It would've been cool to have Bale, but Kevin Conroy is the definitive animated Batman voice.

Trailer for Gotham Knight up! (http://www.totaleclips.com/player/Splash.aspx?formatid=2&bitrateid=214&custid=235&playerid=65&clipid=e39043&affliateid=-1)
talk about rockin my socks off
The Production IG (Blood the Last Vampire, Ghost in the Shell, etc) looking piece during the trailer looks great. Slick, fluid animation and I like the character design style too.

Oh man that shit looks tight!
So is this supposed to be like the Animatrix where they have a few different short stories or is it one movie?

I think it's supposed to be a collection of short stories. I think it's supposed to be like 6 episodes? It looks like it has different villains for each episode too, though it might be just a few only (only spotted scarecrow, killer croc, manbat, and dead shot...and a bunch of thugs)

It's 6 episodes, one story... kinda. It is supposed to be linked together and it's supposed to represent how Batman goes from being a beginner to being... Batman. It's meant as a go between from Begins to Dark Knight. Each episode does have a different baddie but like i said... one continuous story.
