Well today at 2pm i get over to my parents house to see my mother standing outside screaming that she hit the cat .
after a few mintues she said that she turned her car on and heard a big bang and the kitten came running out of the car. i probally told her 20 times to check before starting it cause all of the strays will climb up there.
So we rush the kitten to the vets and sadly they said the leg was so mangled it had to come off. The doctor then came back into the room and said with some Major calling around and begging doctors that they would do the operation at COST
so what would cost over 1000 bucks would cost 300 bucks.
at 4pm tonight the little kitten went into surgery and came out a little after 5pm. THe doctor just called 20 mins ago and said that she is coming out of the meds and is doing fine.
So now we have a new 3 legged cat : )
lost her front right leg... hopefully she wont have that much trouble walking since its a front leg. also this was a PURE STRAY since the day it was born and hopefully after a few nights she will learn how to live in a house (I say the kitten is about 2 to 3 months)
always check your engines
EDIT YES I KNOW THE SPELLING AND ALL iS #$## Up but im going on 3 hour sleep in the past 2 days .
Dear God; that would make me sick to my stomach if that happened to me.
That's great that you're going to keep it.
Just imagine, most people would have just left it for dead.

That was really nice of you to keep it. I once had cat that got caught in our engine, however he just lost the tip of his tail so he was fine.

all thanks should go to the vets since they are eating the cost (well almost all of the cost)
before we went in we all decided that 250 to 300 was the max we would put into the cat (Since its not our cat. its live outside all of its life and who knows how well it will do as an indoor cat)
if the vets didnt offer to eat 90% of the cost and it did run 1000+ we would of put it down.
Office call was 80
Some kind of blood test 60
surgery was 200 (they said this alone would cost 800+ )
this was the last of the little (rest of them either ran away or got killed off)
we thought they would at least xray the leg before cutting it off BUT They said there was Massive tissue damage. They could grab the injured leg and the cat wouldnt even attempt to pull it back
should have it home in the morning. Never had a 3 legged animal so hopefully it goes all right

Poor thing...at least with got really lucky and only lost its leg. Sadly, I have seen what happens when the cat isn't fast enough to get off of the warm engine block.
Of all of our cats, mine is the only one that didn't start out as a stray. Pixie has rescued several kittens in our time, and they grow up to be fine indoor cats.

didn't we have a thread about cats in car engines a few weeks back?
someone didn't learn. :-|
i think there was a thread about somone finding a sleeping cat in their engine

But seriously, who the fuck has time to pop the hood and check it inch by inch or sections of the engine where a cat might rest on before turning it on??!!?
I would honk the horn a few times, that would scare the shit out of it if it was in the engine and I am sure it would run out of there quick. But I am also sure that would piss of the neighbors too.

You should get her some of these:

before we went in we all decided that 250 to 300 was the max we would put into the cat (Since its not our cat. its live outside all of its life and who knows how well it will do as an indoor cat)
Don't worry about that. You said it was 2-3 months old, right? It is definitely young enough to be an indoor cat. Hell, I adopted a fully-grown completely feral huge male cat that I had been feeding outside my house for a year in the desert in Tucson (so he was a tough guy - dealing with coyotes and all that). We had to move temporarily and I didn't want to leave him stranded (since we fed him every day outside). But he wouldn't let us get near. We borrowed out cat sitter's trap, caught him, and kept him in the house for the 7 months we were gone (cat sitter took care of him). When we came back he eventually got used to us (and the other cats) and is now the biggest softie in the world (and by big I mean it - he's 18-20 pounds). So if a full-grown completely feral male cat can turn tame I'm sure your 3-legged kitten will do fine ;). I mean, this guy was so wild he would have been put down out of standard policy at most animal control centers (those that aren't no-kill, anyway), which is why we had to keep him.
Since slidecage hasn't come through with the obligatory cat pic yet, here's mine:

got the call to pick her up in an hour. bill is now up to 480 they treated her with major flea meds and the rest of the meds she is on.
doctor said how bad her leg looks , she was probally on top of the engine. heard my mother getting into the car and starting to climb down and the fan belt got her
now she has to stay in a cage for the next 2 to 3 weeks So she doesnt hurt herself. then back to the vets for all their shots another 100+
ouch seems this kittne is going to cost close to 700
but then again at least its alive (sister is thowing a fit right now saying for 700 buck she could of had a nice dog from a pet store and picked up a free kitten)
LOL scan the kitten. never though about that .. though my fat cat probally scan itself cause it loves lying on warm items

Reminds me of the last batch of kittens we had around here. Little suckers were climbing all up in my Explorer. Ever tried to get 5 scared kittens out of the framework of a vehicle? Had to park it away from the house. Though one made its way back to it. Was leaving the house, got about 50 feet, and noticed a black and white furball bouncing in the road behind me. Kitten turned out fine. :)

'We' had a cat that lost one back leg a few years ago. Still as independant as ever, can still climb trees, do almost everything he did before.
It sucks, but cats can still live very happy lives with three legs. Be happy it is still alive.

that happen around 4 years back when they had a little of 8. they finally decided to call the pound and get them picked up. You would scare 4 of the things out of the engine and the other 4 would run up into it.
we even tried parking in the road and the stupid things still ran and slept in it.

little update. sadly we may have to take the kitten back in tomorrow if it does not have a bowel movement. the animal hasnt went number 2 in the last 48 hours (vets said this isnt normal ) its eating can food so it should be doing it
going to really suck if we have to put it down after putting now close to 500 bucks into it

I wouldn't put any more money in, that's for sure. That's the thing with animals. I love animals (especially dogs). But unless you are ridiculously rich, it's usually not worth fighting to save an animal. It seems anytime I have heard of something going horribly wrong with someone's animal and they pay out the nose to fix it, it quickly becomes a domino effect.
We had had a Cheseapeake Bay Retreiver for over 14 years. He started losing weight one day and it kept going for a month or two. So we took him into the vet. They found what they thought was the problem and said they could operate. But they warned that after all the expenses we dumped into him, it was not for sure he would make it. We had to make the tremendously hard decision of putting him down. It was like a member of the family. We had had him since I was 5 years old.
This is just a stray. It likely will not end well (nor cheap). Cut your losses is what I say.

How is that racist? If a culture is known to do something then that isn't racist to call them out on it.
Anyways, i'd have put the cat down at home and been done with it.

Wow, I applaud you. I would so have put the cat down immediately. Once I saw a cat get hit in my neighborhood by an SUV who just kept going. So I stopped to check, and the cat was bleeding from the mouth and head, and was very "broken". It wouldn't me near it to help it, kept lashing out. So, I went and got my .22 and put it down. It was sad, but that thing was just suffering.

You should also check for felines in the cat-alytic converter.
Seriously, although I've come to distrust all stories on the internets, I applaud your family and your vets.

Just another reason why I hate "most people".
It does remind me of a time that I found kitten. Or rather, one that found me, despite going blind from hunger. It was such a loving little creature and it breaks my heart (to this very day) that I gave it up to an Animal Shelter, knowing fully well it was probably going to be put to sleep.
