To be fair, most of Godfather looked like crap on the Wii, too.
EDIT: Hey, who bumped this thing up to two Cheapy heads? I wanted this to be the lowest rated thread ever. You're harshing on my dream, man. Even I voted it 1 head.
EDIT2: Dammit, up to three heads. I give up.
I just gave you a 1-cheapy head review.
The Godfather totally looks like a PS2 game, but the motion controls are so fun! I was sold when the tutorial level has you bludgeon a helpless man with your bare hands, and the first mission involved busting up some guy's store. Hopefully you can garotte someone with the Nunchuck cord, but I haven't played much yet so I don't know.

Yes. Though it's very hard to do until you get a certain upgrade. You know the one. It's hugely worth it - it turns garroting into one simple, swift motion.
My favourite motion is the strangling. It was very hard at first because I was just shaking my hands rapidly. It got very easy once I started to do it like I would in real life - more of a back and forth motion.

Do u guys think Red Steel is worth trying for 13.99? I bought it and I am nervous to open it and think I wasted even 13.99.

It's kinda a love-it-or-hate-it game. Most people I've ever met hate it. I definitely wouldn't have paid $14 for it. I personally wouldn't touch any pre-Metroid Prime 3 FPS on the Wii.
Doesn't help that there's only one post-MP3 FPS on the Wii. Which is really a shame - I found aiming with the remote to be leaps and bounds better than dual analogue.

Thanks for you opinion. Maybe I will return it and put the $ towards another game. I really want Bully for the wii.
Edit: Returned the game today. Bought Bully, I am very happy with the game so far.

I'm going to try to get a Wii at Target this Sunday. This thread's really useful! What I'm wondering is, what's the consensus on 2-4 player local multiplayer games? There seem to be an endless number of minigame-games, but I'm not sure which ones are that good.
I was thinking of basically having Wii Sports, probably Wii Play (even though I heard it kinda sucks, I was going to buy a second controller anyway), and SSBB (of course). Beyond that, I might get another good single-player game like Mario Galaxy or Twilight Princess, and then one more good multiplayer game. I'll only have the two controllers at first but eventually I'll have four.
From reading the summaries at the beginning of the thread, nothing seems to stand out. Raving Rabbids maybe? Mario Party? Wario Ware? Carnival Games? Or maybe Elebits for something a bit different? Mainly I'm looking for something simple and fun that anyone can pick up and play, because not all of my friends are gamers who would appreciate the intricacies of SSBB.

Mario Galaxy is gorgeous but not as good as Mario 64 or (IMO) Mario Sunshine. Only maybe 5/120 stars will give you trouble if you are any good at video games at all. Brawl is amazing. Best game on Wii. WarioWare is good, but has a few minor flaws. You have to beat the single player mode before you get multi player, which takes about an hour.

Actually, I don't think I'll be getting Mario Galaxy. I get horribly confused most of the time... I might get 5/120 stars before I give up, in fact. But I'm usually decent at Zelda games (though it took me several peeks at a walkthrough to beat Wind Waker, which most people considered really easy).
Based on how I was never able to get anywhere with either Mario 64 or Mario Sunshine, I don't think I'd like Galaxy. But that's okay - there are a ton of good Wii games out there.

Don't assume that of Galaxy.
Actually I'm kind of the opposite, Zelda games confuse me a lot more. Yet I still love them, and see them as worth the trouble.
But Galaxy is a lot different from the other 3D marios. It's very linear, and even the few more wide open levels are 100 times more linear and easier to follow than anything in 64 or sunshine.
Trust me, you won't have probs and you'll be hitting yourself for ever doubting the game in the first place.

Local Multiplayer? I'd go with Ghost Squad, Elebits, SSBB (duh), and House of the Dead. Wasn't a big fan of the last Mario Party. Not big on the minigame thing - hell, the multiplayer thing - in general over here.

Dunno about soccer - Strikers is supposed to be pretty good - but I really haven't followed that in the least.
As far as shooters go? If we're talking FPS, you generally wanna avoid those if you're searching for splitscreen action. Either they have little/no local multiplayer (Medal of Honor Heroes 2) or they use an outdated, pre-Metroid control scheme (Red Steel). Rail shooters, however, are better. Ghost Squad's probably the best one at the moment - Resident Evil's bosses are a little on the too-hard side - but then there's that House of the Dead collection, too. Also, Elebits. And if you want to extend "shooting" to include things like Galaxy Wars or Metal Slug, either one of those would be a good choice.

thanks for the help. I used to play co-op shooting game with my buddy all the time on PS2 like Conflict desert storm and other conflicts game. sound like i might need to try ghost squad but i hear the game is really short. is that true?

tankexmortis

Ghost Squad is short in that there are only three ten-minute levels, but the levels change the more you play them and you unlock new stuff each playthrough - different guns and outfits, mostly. I've been through it four or five times so far and it hasn't gotten old yet. Also gotta recommend HotD 2 + 3 for local multiplayer, and Metal Slug Anthology is a good choice.
You can use your gun for any rail shooter - HotD, Ghost Squad, and Umbrella Chronicles are the only ones worth playing though. You can't use it for Metroid Prime.
As for Wii vs. 360, generally the 360 version is gonna be better, but it depends on the game. Raving Rabbids is way more fun on the Wii, for instance.

what shooting game that i can use my gun with?[quote=leung19;4090011]As was said above, Ghost Squad is very short, but has a billion unlockables and great replayability. It's ugly, though, as SEGA didn't change the graphics much from the arcade version.

There are exceptions to this rule - Godfather was great on the Wii, for example, and the new Bully certainly holds its own - but multiplatform games are generally not what you get the Wii for, sadly.

Now, graphics aren't the most important thing to me (otherwise I wouldn't have gotten a Wii) but I'm wondering, which Wii games are the most graphically impressive? I've heard that Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 are both excellent (figures that I picked up Twilight Princess as my first big Nintendo single-player game). Anything else? I don't even care so much about fancy shaders and high poly counts, just interested in games that look really good. Take Wind Waker, for instance - maybe not the most demanding game, but a very attractive one, simply by virtue of its art style.
It just seems that most Wii games, especially third-party ones, are rushed ports of GameCube, PS2, or PSP games, with little to no improvement in the graphics department from the original. Are Nintendo the only ones who give a rip about how their games look?

Ah, a good question from someone who clearly has good taste.
I think Galaxy and Prime 3 are indeed two of the best looking games on the system, and clearly could not be done on a gamecube or ps2. Zelda is a great game too, but it is by definition a high-end gamecube game in terms of graphics. And although it definitely has rough edges, Brawl has some great-looking moments, especially if you like stylization. It's a few notches up from Melee for sure.

Zack & Wiki looks really nice, but the second last level has some really bad slowdown. And of course, RE4 looks as good as ever.

I'm gonna nitpick a little myself and say that Medal of Honor Heroes 2 was not Wii Only , it was also on the PSP. It's kinda weird really since the original MoH Heroes was a PSP port of MoH Vanguard , which was released on the wii , 360 , and PS3. Yet Heroes 2 was a PSP also released on the wii.:-s
Regardless of whether it's wii only or not it's still supposed to be a good game , and based on reviews is better than the PSP version.

It was always being made for the Gamecube. First Nintendo swore up and down that it was on just GCN and was not going on the "Revolution" (Wii). Then they changed and said it was going to be a simultaneous release on the Wii launch for Wii and GCN. Then they changed again and made the GCN release about 3 weeks after the Wii launch. So basically Nintendo sucks.

Oh, my...
How good is No more heroes? is it kinda like GTA? can you fight with both hand?No More Heroes is awesome, but it's nothing like GTA. It has an overworld that, on the surface, is sorta GTA-ish, but if you go in hoping for anything like GTA, you will be very disappointed. The overworld is just for driving from A to B. You can't even take damage. Once you've raised enough money doing odd jobs in the overworld, you can play a level - the main bit of the game - decapitating goons and killing bosses. It's a beat-em-up like Double Dragon. Only fucking crazy.
what about Zelda? is it RPG? I really havent play any RPG b4.Arguable, but most people don't consider it an RPG. Ever play Okami? It's a lot like that. If you haven't played a Zelda... man, where the hell have you been?
what is Metroid? shooting game? screenshot dont look too exciting?Though it starts oddly reminiscent of Halo, it's not a shooter. It's more like "Zelda with guns", though it has some of the best shooting controls I've ever used. Just make sure you set them to "Advanced" and have free aiming on. The game looks great, though it does not photograph well. If you haven't played a Metroid before... man, you've missed out. Ever play Castlevania? This is kinda like that.
how is the control on Zack & Wiki? With the exception of a couple of things, they're all very good. Make sure you're used to adventure games like Monkey Island and King's Quest and the like before getting this. And are prepared for the -10 to masculinity.
what is the diff between Super Paper Mario and Galaxy?Super Paper Mario is far slower, has light RPG elements, and... is paper. Everything is paper. SMG is far better, but I still loved Paper Mario. Paper Mario makes minimal use of the remote - SMG is slightly better.
Fire Emblem another RPG game?Yes. It's a Strategy Role Playing Game. And one of the hardest ones you'll ever not play. Doesn't even use the Wii Remote.
Trauma Center: New Blood look interesting, but is it one and done kinda game? Not sure. Only played the one before that. It's supposed to be damn hard, but hey, there's co-op! And it controls damn well.
EDIT: I see you're interested in Ghost Squad. A few things you should keep in mind. First, it's a rail shooter, not a standard FPS. Second, it's a port of an old arcade game, so it doesn't look good. Third, you'll run through it in, like, a half an hour, but it has a lot of replayability.
Just out of curiosity, what systems have you owned, and what are your favorite games? It's hard to explain these games without knowing your frame of reference (Crotch did a great job, though). Never played Zelda or Metroid? What have you played?

Even if you've played the 360/PS2 version, Madden is a blast on Wii. Definitely check it out if you haven't yet. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 on Wii is also supposed to be very good, but I haven't tried that yet so I can't say for sure.
If you like The Sims, I'd recommend checking out MySims. It's not really the same as the other Sims games, and many people dislike it, but I had quite a bit of fun with it. It's kind of like a mix of Animal Crossing and Sims; and definitely more focused on building stuff/a community than controlling a Sims life. Worth a rental, anyways.

Sounds like you weren't much of a gamer before. Maybe you should start off with some Virtual Console classics to get up-to-date? May I recommend:
Super Metroid
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Super Mario Bros. 3
Mario Kart 64
Star Fox 64
Those should give you a frame of reference for some of the newer stuff, not to mention six of the best games ever made (and for less than a new 360 game). Oh, and if you pick up some Gamecube controllers and a memory card, you should get Animal Crossing as well; it's sort of the Japanese equivalent of the Sims.

Oh, man, to be a Nintendo virgin again.
I would start with Mario Galaxy and Zelda Twilight princess for single-player, and Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii for multiplayer action. That's the core Nintendo goodness right there. Then come back and tell us what you liked and didn't like, and branch out from there.
I think if Mario Galaxy was the first Mario game I played, my head would explode.

I wouldn't necessarily be so quick to recommend those older games, for two reasons. First, SNES games are kind of a problem to control on the Wii - you can't use just the Wiimote like you can with NES games, and if you use a GameCube controller the buttons are often arranged inconveniently. The Classic controller's the best for SNES, but it's only useful if you are planning on playing a bunch of VC games. The GameCube controller is fine for N64 games, and is also good for playing several Wii games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
The second reason is that it can be hard to enjoy those old games if you never played them when they first came out years ago. I never had a video game system until a few years ago (other than a GameBoy); I would just play games on my computer. When I try going back and playing those old games, I tend to just get frustrated and lost. Those games aren't bad per se (in fact they're very good), but a lot of their replay value is heavily buoyed by people's nostalgia for them.
There isn't enough continuity from game to game in any of the big Nintendo series (Zelda, Metroid, Mario) for you to need to go back and play the old versions. They might be fun time-wasters for a little while, but they're much narrower in scope than the more recent games, if only because they're limited by the technology that was available when they first came out.
I certainly wouldn't go nuts buying special controllers and lots of VC games right at first, at least. Buy $10 of Wii points and get yourself the web browser and one NES game that you can control with a sideways Wiimote.

That's true for most games, but not for those. There are such things as timeless classics. My girlfriend had never played any of those, but she loves 'em all. Hell, I'd never played Super Metroid until a few years back; didn't make me love it any less. I really think that buying those games would be a far better purchase than anything else except Brawl and possible Galaxy.
And yes, a Classic Controller would make Super Metroid a bit better than having to play it with a GCN controller. But if I played it on a keyboard my first time through and loved every second, then he can use a Wavebird.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 on Wii is also supposed to be very good, but I haven't tried that yet so I can't say for sure.
I've been reading up on this, and that game looks absolutely fantastic. I'm not even in to soccer (nothing against it - just don't pay much attention to most of the sports out there), and I still want it.

Okay, here's one for you guys. I just picked up two extra Wiimotes this weekend, so now I have four of them and two nunchucks. I also got Rayman Raving Rabbids (the first one) on clearance, thinking it would be a decent party game.
Unfortunately, Rabbids requires that you play each game in single player first before you can do it in multiplayer. Once I finish the single player game I figure it might still be good, but it looks like it'll require two more nunchucks. That's another $40 and I could just as easily spend that on one or two other games that might be more fun for lots of people.
What I'm looking for is a game that fulfills these requirements:
- Supports four players
- Simultaneous multiplayer - I've heard Wario Ware is of the "pass the controller" variety, so I'm not interested.
- Easy to pick up and play. I already have a "skill required" 4-player game in Super Smash.
- Doesn't require the nunchuck (this is flexible - I'll likely end up getting two more nunchucks eventually)
- Not total fuck
It's actually rather difficult to find this information, especially the hot seat vs. simultaneous multiplayer thing.

Actually, I just realized that Mario Kart Wii will only require the remote, and I know everyone can get into that. My Wii is giving me artifacts so I'll send it in for a replacement, and by the time I get it back it'll almost be the release date. Until then I'll be fine with the games I have. Wii Sports is probably the best.

I hate this thread, because no one ever looks here, but here's to hoping!
I used to hate racing games. The Wii changed things recently. Now I love Excite Truck. I like Mario Kart a lot. A few months ago I discovered I like the Burnout series a lot (yes, I know it's not on Wii, but I keep hoping for a Wii version).
Anyway, the point is that there are a ton of racing games out for the Wii, and most of them are terrible. But I want more racing, as long as it uses the remote like a steering wheel. I'm most curious about either of the Need for Speed games. Has anyone played those? I'm open to other suggestions as well, like the Emergency game that came out today if the driving is halfway decent.
Recommendations - GO!

Has anyone played Nitro Bike? $10 seems to be the going rate for it, and the bulk of the negative reviews on metacritic seem to be giving it low scores primarily for knocking off Excite Truck. If it really is that close to Excite Truck, it could be the game for me, but if reviewers were just reaching and it's not similar at all then it's obviously not worth it.

Aw geez, that's so nice! That's actually the reason I canceled Gamefly, and with 40+ Wii games alone, I don't need to rent more. I think I'm more interested in NFS more, only because it's less points on Goozex. I KNOW Nitrobike will drop, since it's down to like $10 on amazon sometimes. I'm going to vote for Sega Bass. It's fun, easy to get used to, and only $11 at Costco. I got one for my dad and he loved it, and I like playing my copy as well. The controls are appropriately twitchy and you can lose yourself enough in the illusion to make it feel like real fishing. It can be played for just a few minutes, or for a long time. I tried Rapala and Fishing Master and though both were terrible. Sega Bass has the advantage of having realistic characters and fish as well.

Fishing Master is basically a combination of the fishing games from Breath of Fire 3 and Twilight Princess. "Bleh" graphics and rudimentary multiplayer. But $15 ain't that bad a price for it t'all.
Bass Fishing is also pretty damn ugly, what with it being 10 years old or so. Still prefer how it looks to Master. The controls aren't as tight, but it's somewhat deeper than Master.

I didn't think I liked racing games either until the Wii came along. Kind of like how I was turned on to shooting games.
Bass Fishing is decent despite it's flaws. The flaws are easily ignored, especially if you're not obsessed with the cutting edge of graphics (I'm assuming your dad and mine are close enough in age and technological interest). You do reel with the nunchuk and jerk your rod and then when you've done it for long enough and jerked just right the fish explodes out of the water.

The Wii one is extremely simplistic and boring, with barely any RPG elements. I haven't played any of the others because of my experience with the Wii version, but I hear they are a little deeper.
I was really wowed by the Wii version at first and then realized that the game's one trick wasn't really all that fun and that the "challenges" were the same basic thing with no real puzzle-solving to do. It does look pretty.

Paper Mario (N64) and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (NGC) are both absolutely fantastic. I have read that the Wii one isn't in the same league (or perhaps even the same sport), but can't vouch for it myself. The first two games have great humor, great graphics and great gameplay. I didn't think I was going to like playing PM:TTYD with my kids, but I ended up loving it. It's part of the reason I then picked up an N64 - so we could play the original. They probably aren't very difficult in the grand scheme of things, but they have their challenges and the journey is just plain fun. My kids will be getting a Wii at xmas, probably, and my 7 year old wants Super Paper Mario with it, but with what I've read about it I'm trying to push him toward something else instead. Hopefully they'll make a real Wii Paper Mario at some point.

It depends, you could wait for the new Tiger Woods coming up if you are wanting something a bit more realistic and refined. Each edition comes with significant improvements both in graphics/presentation and controls and considering EA actually takes the platform seriously (unlike Ubisoft), it is a sure-fire bet Woods 09 will be worth the money, especially if the last one you played was the launch title.
We Love Golf is also really good, it is from Camelot and they have made the original (and in my opinion, the best) Hot Shots Golf and the Mario Golf series. Physics wise it is fairly realistic and the course design is clever. To keep things simple, if you liked the above, you'll like this one. If not, stick to Tiger Woods.
It is a matter of taste/preference in the end between the two.

The newer Castlevanias hurt Castlevania IV a lot more than the newer Metroids hurt Super Metroid.
Besides, I still prefer the controls in Super Metroid to Zero Mission and Fusion. More buttons to use and all that.

hero,
If you enjoy the NES Castlevanias, you'll love SC IV. It has all the classic bosses, the soundtrack is godly, has a fully-controllable whip, and the game even has cool Mode 7 effects! If you've never played the game, you will die a lot since it is a challenging platformer. I would say it has less replay value than SM but it's one of those play-in-one-sitting games. There's also a considerably harder mode once you beat the game. BTW, the game runs on passwords and there is no save system.
SM is an awesome game, too. The game is huge (lots of locations), boss fights are epic, and the powerups get better and better. However, progressing through the game may be frustrating at times if you cannot figure out what to do. You may even be stuck for days or weeks trying to figure out a problem. Just make sure not to use a game guide unless you are completely stump.
All in all, it comes down to gameplay preference. Both are great, eerie games and you can't go wrong with either. I would suggest you get both! Although my opinion is bias, I personally prefer SC IV b/c I grew up w/ that game, know almost every secret, and it's the best Castlevania I've ever played.
And if you've never played any of the Metroidvanias, you should definitely try one. Just don't play Harmony of Dissonance on GBA b/c it's not that great when compared to the others.

Looking for good RPGs in the VC Wii...
I have picked up Paper Mario and SMRPG... I was thinking about Ys but don't know.
I don't mind Zelda style rpg either. But already have those on GBA so am not going to rebuy.
I have SC IV and not interested in Metroid... but don't mind games like that either if they are good.
so, please... help!

It's been a while since anyone's posted...
I bought Wii Play ($33 wiimote), Wario Shake It and deBlob from TRU this week. I know I want the cheap controller... errr Wii Play, but I'm not sure about the other two games. I'm more into casual games these days, but the reviews seem like Wario is old school fun and deBlob is just new. Is there anything that has come out lately that is more worthwhile (and won't see pricedrops any time soon, as deBlob may see)?
I'm also interested in going back and doing Dokapon (supposedly a good party game), Okami and a filler for Jillian Michaels' FU 2009 (I think those are all $40)? For $27 each I'm pretty sure I can't go wrong with those.
What do you guys think?
The Crotch

Personally, I'd only have rented 'em (and did, in the case of de Blob). But I guess resale value on Wario will be fairly high for a while now so if you decide to get rid of it, it's a minor expense. I'll answer better when I'm not supposed to be paying attention in sociology.

Hunter: The Reckoning? No, not really. Not that I can think of. The only vaguely close thing to that is No More Heroes, but you're still looking at two pretty different experiences there. However, the team that made the Hunter games is working on The Conduit right now, so, y'know, there's that.

Okami (Sold out on Amazon.ca)
Fire Emblem (Sold out on Amazon.ca)
Metroid Prime 3
Mario Striker's Charged
De Blob
Warrior Land Shake it
Also pre-ordered Tales of Symphonia on amazon.ca :D
I was debating if I should give Mario Galaxy / Paper Mario a try, but decided to let it slide. I was never a huge fan of Mario after Super Mario 3 on nintendo, and Mario Galaxy makes me dizzy with all the reverse camera that is showned on youtube.

Thats the closest I can think of... I will say that AS is a bit deeped in the sense that you actually have some RPG elements to upgrade your character etc. Its not simly runa nd gun, but top down, multiplayer game.
My father in law loved Hunter the reckoning. I have no idea why he liked it so much, but he did. We played through it twice.

Web of Shadows is decent, not great. It plays basically the same as Spider-Man 2 did for the PS2 - open-world swinging (fun), waves of generic bad guys that you get to punch endlessly (fun) while switching between red/blue Spidey and black Spidey (fun) and a terrible story about the symbiote (not fun). I haven't played Spider-Man: Firend or Foe, but otherwise Web of Shadows is the best Spider-Man game I have played counting all the way back to the first Genesis Spider-Man game. It's still not a fantastic game, but it's solid and does a good job capturing the swinging, bouncy aspects of the character.
I haven't played the newest Rapala, but I think I've played all the other fishing games to date and would vote for Sega Bass Fishing at the top of the list. It lacks a lot of features, but did the best job for me capturing the feeling of fishing.

Well I have played the Sega remake... the game is decent. The Rapala tourney is least expensive at Sears for $39.99 and its not bad either. I think the best one is fishing master in regards to challenge and fun ratio.. That being siad its a bit childish in presentation and is more sim like. I have not tried Hooked fishing and the controller that comes with the Rapala tourney is a joke and not usefull at all.

I played some Baja 1000 (it just came out) and it's pretty mediocre, but it does give you the option of several vehicles, one of which is an ATV. I haven't played the Kawasaki Quads game just because of endless horrible press. Nitro Bike is almost unplayable - the controls are too touchy and the tracks are too narrow so the whole thing works against itself.
Honestly, even though it's not an ATV game, Excite Truck is probably the closest thing to what you are looking for. It is polished, the controls are tight, it has immense replay value AND it's really fun. Since most of the fun of an ATV game comes from the jumping and the skidding, I'm assuming that's what you're looking for and Excite Truck has it.

Yah, Ghost Squad. Like is inside The Crotch's words. Kill terrorists and feel better. It is fun. You cannot tell if I am serious or not? I am. Serious.
Elebits and Baraoque are generally both less than $30, wildly different, and both very nice games that you will get a lot of time out of.
For the ATV question earlier, I just tried MX vs ATV and it is not worth your time. Overly touchy controls and cumbersome interface. Also, not fun. I also tried one of the Monster Trux games and was entertained by just how abysmal the sound design was. And, it was a really crappy game.

Power Stone!
...
Hmm? Oh. Fuck. Nevermind.
Well, my natural inclination here is just to say Mario Kart. It's got the same "Holy shit what the hell just happened hey cool now I'm in the lead oh shit now I'm not" thing going on. It's a different genre, sure, but really very similar. Maybe a good multiplayer rail-shooter like Ghost Squad or that new House of the Dead, whenever it comes out (probably after Christmas)? Or Blast Works. Now, if said guy mainly plays Brawl 1v1 with no items or something then that's a different matter. It's stretching it, but No More Heroes? It's hard to go wrong with that game.
Also, something using his main Brawl character (as long as it's not ROB or Sonic)? Say, Fire Emblem 9 and 10 for an Ike user? Metroid Prime 3 for a (S/Z)amus user? If he uses Marth... I dunno, a DS and an import of the new Fire Emblem for that (which I've been hearing some things both good-and-bad about). I'd be hesitant about picking up a Pikmin game for an Olimar user 'cause his best game is being remade, anyway (There are a lot of parenthesis in this post, aren't there?).

Recommend me some games! I'm not a "gamer" - I bought a Wii last year, but, before that, I haven't played video games since the SNES and Sega Genesis I had when I was young.
I like easier Wii titles, like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Link's Crossbow Training, Lego Star Wars, Tetris Party and Boom Blox. I really liked Zack and Wiki.
I also like Resident Evil 4, but it's a little too hard for me. When I'm not battling the huge groups of zombies (or whatever they are) or the bosses, I enjoy it.
I did not like Endless Ocean (boring), Ghost Squad (way too short, and I didn't want to play it again), or Need for Speed Carbon.
I've decided to download World of Goo and Toki Tori. I'll get Lego Indiana Jones when the price drops (I'm still working on Lego Star Wars anyway.)
Do you think I'll like No More Heroes? It looks fun - like a video game version of Kill Bill.
Do you think I'll like Okami? I have a couple of Zelda games for my GBA, but I hate that sometimes you have to just randomly explore to figure out what to do. For example, I had to find a mushroom to get a magic potion. I looked and looked for that mushroom, but couldn't find it.
I finally used a guide to figure out that I had to go into and out of a certain cave, and the mushroom would just appear. How would I have figure that out on my own? I hate that. Well you liked Crossbow Training and sorta liked RE4---Why not House of the Dead 2 and 3 Returns? Yeah, it's like Ghost Squad in the sense that it's short, but, there's tons of unlockables and it's 2 different games.
de Blob is what I am currently playing, along with the never ending Animal Crossing. de Blob is like a platformer/puzzle game? It's hard to explain, and maybe someone else can you better insight on it. Animal Crossing is really good. Have you ever played the cube version or the DS version?
I didn't ignore your Okami question--I never played that. 8-)

Chiwii: I'd have to think on the Okami question for a bit. Definitely try (as in, rent or buy cheap) de Blob and the Wario games. And Mario Kart & Brawl, of course. I haven't played either No More Heroes or Metroid Prime 3 on their easy modes so I dunno how well those would go, though I suspect some of the NMH bosses would still venture into this-is-pissing-me-off territory.
...
The easy mode of Fire Emblem 10, however, is quite simple.
Unlike the hard mode that I'm currently playing. I swear, my wyverns are RNG cursed. My Haar never gains speed and my Jill never gains HP. Fuck you and your Laguz charge, Lethe!

Thanks for the quick replies! I actually just started looking into De Blob, and it looks good. My only concern at this point is that it's supposedly short, and I don't want to pay $40-$50 for a short game. I'll be waiting for a sale on that one.
I don't know anything about the Wario games or Animal Crossing - I'll look into those.
I avoided House of the Dead 2 and 3 Returns because of my dislike for Ghost Squad. I played through Ghost Squad 2 or 3 times, and I had no desire to play again to get the unlockables or choose the alternate routes. I assume that I'd feel the same way about House of the Dead 2 and 3 Returns.

Note that the Wario games are also really short. Hence the "rent" suggestion.
Animal Crossing, however, will last forever until Tom Nook breaks your knees.

The Okami fights are very easy - there's even a way to exit them if you don't feel like doing them (doing so has a slight negative impact, but not anything that actually changes the gameplay).
There are some hints, but even with the hints you will do a LOT of running around in the game. Which is one of the things I love about it, since it is so beautiful, but part of the game is restoring the land so you do spend a lot of time looking for dead trees to circle so they bloom. Even with the large open world, the game is fairly linear and you get herded into your next task pretty easily.
It's a tough call - based on what you posted Okami may not be the game for you. I've played it on both PS2 and Wii now and it may actually be my favorite non-puzzle game, but I'm aware that it's not for everyone. It's a very long game, but a lot of that length is padding. I happen to like the padding, but I can see why people complained about the endless fetching and side tasks and running around.
Does that help at all?

NFG - drop a PM to FriskyTanuki. If memory serves, he's the person to ask about the Naruto fighting games. I want to say he said at some point that he liked the last GC one (I think it was Naruto -Subtitle- 4) more than Smash Bros.
My suspicion re: which is better is that later games will have more characters and be following the current story arcs more closely. So I guess if someone is a fan of the show, they'd want the latest game, which probably has more refined gameplay anyway.
If FT isn't the guy to ask about this, I apologize for wasting your/his time. You might want to link him to this thread/post so he knows what we're discussing. I'm fairly sure he's the guy to ask though.
Now that I think about it, the DBZ Budokai games might be something to take a look at. You should be able to get them pretty cheap by now. I seem to remember them being fun in a "look at the cool stuff happening on the screen" sort of way.

NoMore Heroes is a fun game but if RE4 was too hard I don't see you finishing it.
some of the side missions are hard and so that means either A) you'll be frustrated trying to do really hard missions or b) end up repeating the easier ones over and over again so you can get enough cash to progress. The last few bosses are kinda difficult as well.
It's a great game just like RE4 but they're not what I'd call easy. Now World of Goo on the other hand is wicked awesome. It's great like Prince of Persia Sands of Time was great. I wish they remade that for the Wii. If you get the opportunity play it. Sands of Time is like low-impact exercise. It's so smooth it's th official game of Billy D Williams

I'd recommend getting a gamecube controller.. Then look into getting Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, and Wario World for gamecube. Wario can be pretty short but it's fun and should be pretty cheap. Star Wars: Rogue Leader is also a gamecube game I recommend but it might be a bit challenging for you, not sure.. It's been a while since I played it.
I also recommend getting Super Mario 64, StarFox64, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the virtual console. The gamecube controller tends to work much better than the classic controller for N64 games.
You might be able to find Super Mario Galaxy at Blockbuster for $25 if that interests you.. Do you play with other people often or usually just by yourself?

Some more "easy" but fun games you might like based on what you posted - Excite Truck (very long game with many difficulty levels), Lego Batman (pretty much the same thing as Lego Star Wars but with Batman) and possibly (I'm going to get made fun of for this) the Dancing With The Stars or Karaoke Revolution games. Those last two have gotten a lot of playtime in our house and do a good job of bridging the gap between "games" and "activities". They have very easy difficulty settings to work up from and don't punish failure very harshly. The music spans a decent range of popular songs and quickly stands apart from your musical taste for the sake of the game. I never in my life thought I would champion a Celine Dion songs as one of the most fun to play.

Zelda's the longer game and it has more sidequests and such. The main optional stuff in MP3 would be filling up your scan logs and getting every item for the full ending.
MP3 is also the harder game of the two, which is great by me. Zelda was too easy.

I ended up picking up Super Mario Galaxy at BlockBuster for $25. I've been on the fence about this one - the gameplay videos that I saw didn't interest me much. But I know that it got great reviews, and everyone seems to love it. For $25, I'll give it a try!
Metroid Prime 3 has a better chance of dropping in price sooner, if that makes any difference.
Between the two, I'd say Metroid Prime 3. LoZ:TP is good, but I wasn't as enthused about it as I was when I first picked up and played OOT, MM, WW, and even PH. It's solid, but nothing amazing. I played and beat it on the GC, and did try out the Wii version.
For game length, LoZ:TP clocks in at about 40-60 hours to complete everything. I'm a semi-completionist, have everything except for a few pieces of heart, and my save was somewhere in the 50s.
Metroid Prime 3, I haven't beaten yet, so I'm not sure. My Wii is currently offline, due to the TV being in another room.

MP3 can vary greatly in length depending on how much you want to explore and scan. At 30 or 40 hours (I can't remember exactly) I took probably five times as long to get through it as what is possible just because a huge part of my enjoyment came from just looking at everything. The fighting is really secondary for me in the Metroid games; I just like hanging out on the desolate worlds and exploring.

Yep. And it is fun.
It's actually an assortment of physical physics puzzles and games with decent production values. The puzzle types range from "find the weak spot to topple the whole tower in one throw" to "slide blocks in a certain sequence to free trapped creatures". The party games are too varied to get into - there are a ton of them and most are really fun.

I'd agree. Used it's worth maybe $20. Although it's one of those games that seems a lot worse than it is because of the simplified nature. It's definitely better suited for multiple people in one room. Even if all the people aren't playing, they'll enjoy helping solve puzzles. If you plan on playing alone, I'd hold off. If your holiday plans involve a lot of people playing with or watching you play with your Wii, it might be worth it.

Many of those reviews were from the UK release, which was pretty early in WiiWare's life cycle. I'm not saying they don't have some valid points, but I think for the same point total you get far more value with something like Tetris Party or Dr. Mario.
Here are my thoughts from the old VC/WiiWare thread:
I've played MaBoShi quite a bit and WANT to recommend it, but I just can't. The presentation is very simple but doesn't come off as clean, just cheap. The gameplay goes immediately from completely dull to maddeningly frustrating and the three shapes, while requiring different strategies, really don't feel all that different from each other. This was one of the most Flash-like games I have played and it didn't even feel like it was trying to hold itself above that designation at all.

How would you say it compares to the DS version? I really disliked that because it seemed to be too tricky to control quickly, but also probably because it made my hand cramp up. I played the Wii version while it was still in development and it definitely wasn't a finished product but I've always based my negative impression of the game on that experience.

I haven't played the DS version (I now own the game, but not a DS... yet), but I get engrossed with Geometry Wars due to the concentration required not to get killed every 1/10th of a second. I suppose my hands are fairly steady, as I don't have the classic controller and just use the wiimote and still really enjoy it - then again, I haven't hit any of the top medals on any level, so it's likely the classic controller would help my game ;) I haven't played a serious shoot-em-up like this in a while, but I find it incredible that no matter how many enemies are on-screen at once, there's absolutely no slow-down and the graphics are quite good (for what it is).
On a slightly different note, is it possible to use Gamecube controllers with Wii games? Such as using one for Geometry Wars? If not, I suppose I'll pick up the classic controller, but I wanted to check first.... (haven't tried yet, obviously).

It makes sense. From a financial standpoint there is additional development/testing to support another control method. From a presentation standpoint too many options conflicts with the Wii's main selling point for most people - simple controls that you can immediately pick up and play.

I'm gonna play the devil's advocate here...
Regarding the financial point, it would depend on how the controller would be set-up by default. Nintendo could've decided to partially-support plugged-in GCN controllers by mapping certain buttons/controls by default, and allowing game developers to enable additional GCN controller features on a per-game basis. This way, GCN controllers would work with the basic Wii console and have some operation in all games, and other games would have specialized GCN control. It wouldn't have cost any more to design the Wii to operate this way, but obviously they chose not to do that. It's likely that a "default" GCN control scheme wouldn't work correctly with many games, which is mostly likely why they didn't do it.
Concerning the easy-of-use argument, the GCN ports are hidden behind the closed compartment door. People who want to use them see them there, and everyone else just leaves them alone. If there had been a default GCN controller scheme, game boxes which didn't support specialized GCN controller support wouldn't have need any additional graphics to indicate the support, as it would've been handled automatically by the hardware.

It's the only one I played. I also picked it up free at Mircocenter ($10 off a $10 game.. what were they thinking. Heck I picked up a few copies for CAGs IIRC) It does have a bit of slow-down when you get a lot of enemies on screen. I never found fault with that. Maybe I'm weird but I always thought of it like bullet time. The action is so extreme the game slows down so I can think faster than the computer. Dude I used to love that in Gradius :nes:

(#1 being Wii). I don't mean to imply that your argument is inaccurate. I'm sure that's what they say. I've read it myself somewhere but it's still stupid and idiotic reasoning. Controls schemes don't clutter anything. Just put it in the "Options" menu that every game has. Even if you don't want to do anything cool like offer various controls with the NGC controller and put them in profiles (like SSBB) and label them with Miis. There's no reason it shouldn't be in there at all. Again for the minimum why not put in a default control scheme and have it default off so even if the cube controller is plugged in I have to turn it on manually every time I want to use it. That way the simple people don't get confused.

If there had been a default GCN controller scheme, game boxes which didn't support specialized GCN controller support wouldn't have need any additional graphics to indicate the support, as it would've been handled automatically by the hardware. This is a fine example of why one person doesn't rule a company. There's a perfectly good idea that I didn't think of. That heck might be even easier to implement. Heck if you want to get real. Seeing what firmware updates have done for the PS3 there's still no reason they couldn't do it. Then maybe Nintendo would get people to do firmware updates. You know they might actually do something other than block homebrew. Well thank you waxhead because now useless firmware updates are my new bone to pick with Nintendo.

I don't mean to insult you but I think that's the 2nd most idiotic thing I've ever heard.
I won't take it as an insult then. You obviously have not played with as many 50-year-old+ non-gamers as I have. Anything that hints at a requirement beyond the plain remote throws them. You have to keep in mind that "the simple people" are the ones that brought the Wii to where it is and continue to make it successful.
And while your idea to limit control options through hardware is not a bad one, additional "default" methods would still need specific development time alotted to support the method.
Oh, and to remain relatively on-topic I just want to throw in a quick reminder of any recommendation I may have made for de Blob. The game continues to entertain me on many levels - it's joyful, clever and well-made.
Well I know that no-one has done anything in this thread for 4 months but I don't really want to create a new thread. I just got my Wii on Monday and I have about 4 games besides Wii Sports. I've got lists created but was curious as to what else I should look into:
OWN:
de Blob
Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed (I love the series, no matter how crappy the games may be)
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Zak & Wiki
WANT:
Boom Blox
Mario Kart
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Resident Evil 4
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
WarioLand Shake It
UNSURE:
Bomberman Land
Bully Scholarship Edition
Elebits
ExciteTruck
House of the Dead 2 & 3
House of the Dead: Overkill
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
MadWorld
Manhunt 2 (Did they cut out all of the hacking/slashing movements?)
Mario Strikers Charged
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Star Wars Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duel
Anything that I missed or should avoid at all costs?
