View Full Version : Worst game... Ever? (Offroad Extreme! Special Edition)
OK, so Crusin' had bad reviews. But this one tops that. And it tops Chicken Shoot even:
http://wii.ign.com/articles/840/840524p1.html
A solid 1/10 from IGN. There are a few other sub-2 scores in recent reviews there too.
Alvin and the Chipmunks (1.7):
http://wii.ign.com/articles/839/839922p1.html
Mini Desktop Racing (1.2):
http://wii.ign.com/articles/840/840529p1.html
Edit: A new one, Ninjabread Man (1.5):

So let the Wii-bashing shovelware comments come . I dislike all the hate as much as everyone, but there is a point at which Nintendo may have to put their foot down on some of this garbage. While the top dog PS2 had its fair share of shovelware, it seems some of the Wii lesser entries are TRULY atrocious.
Anyway, as we enjoy AAA titles like Mario Galaxy and Zack & Wiki, I thought it would be amusing to read about some of these games we may see in passing at the store and wonder about. I guess the lesson learned is, if in doubt, avoid them like the plague.

ha ha bozon said it was the perfect drunk driving simulator and casamassina said, "If you ever get the chance to rent it, don't. And if somebody buys it for you this holiday, you should close out that friendship immediately."
must be really bad. I don't know if it's the worst game ever but the worst game that I ever played was Superman for the N64.

Kinda sad that Nintendo let's this crap on to their system. Not so much for us, but the uneducated gamer that has only $50 to buy one game to last him or her a few months.
It may very well be the worst game ever, but what's interesting is how much ATTENTION all this shovel-ware is getting. I mean, they actually REVIEWED Alvin and MDR, whereas in the past, the licensed crap was just soundly ignored by critics (except for Seanbaby in EGM). So if you head over to Gamerankings and take a look at the 20 Worst Games Ever, they average around a 30% (probably thanks to Play, Maxim, and GamePro), but they're also MUCH higher profile games for the most part, like The Simpsons Skateboarding and American McGee's Bad Day L.A. So things like Rugrats Studio Tour for the Playstation don't even make the "crap" list ... because nobody even bothered to open 'em up.
It's probably also worth mentioning that of the 20 Worst Games Ever, three are on the GC, two on the Xbox, two the 360, one each for the Wii, PS3, DS, GBA, and PC, and eight -- yes, eight -- are on the PS2.

That is a very good point, actually. A lot of the PS2 crap was never reviewed. But there are more Wii games that haven't been as well - like that broomsticks racing game (Harry Potter ripoff) I see everywhere.
And yet, these are the games that NEED to be reviewed because you never know. I don't need to read 90 reviews of Mario Galaxy but I could use some for these games, the Petz games, etc. Whenever I look for reviews of some game I'm not sure of I can never find any.

Referring back to the EGM article a couple of months ago, they said there's no certifiation process with Nintendo, which is why the big N removed their seal of approval on some current games. Basically, anyone can put out the crap. With Sony and Microsoft, the companies have to pitch it to them. Or something. Who knows.
I'm just glad my store doesn't get in some of this garbage.

Batman Forever (Snes), Shaq-Fu, The Rocketeer, Dragon's Lair (Nes), Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Back to the Future, Bible Adventures, and of course E.T. were all much, much worse. There is no rating low enough to give these games.
So get this, I was in Walmart tonight (looking for those stupid Cars movie diecast vehicles that my son likes and which Walmart has several exclusive ones that they NEVER fucking have in stock - otherwise I wouldn't set foot in the place.
And what do they have but a special 2-pack of Offroad Extreme and Mini Desktop Racing for the LOW LOW price of $29.82 . They also had that Billy Broomsticks game packed along with Ninjabread Man. And these were stocked in mass quantity right by the Wii demo station (which, at least, has Mario galaxy playing on it). It really is too bad people will be buying these as stocking stuffers for their kids without knowing what they are getting into. Seriously, this is a problem for Nintendo as the more people play this crap, the more they will think the Wii sucks and hold off buying good games as a result.
(I realize there have probably been even worse games in the past - the thread title was a bit of hyperbole ;)).

Well what about Publishers putting out games from a movie? They can't seem to get one right and ends up as a low rating...
Edit: Noticed the two games you mentioned: Ninjabread and Billy Boomsticks have no reviews from IGN or Gamespot. I bet they'll get scores of 2-4 if it happens to get reviewed.
Edit 2: The Golden Compass scored a 3.5 on the Wii...so did the 360. Sheez...

Here's an article worth reading: Nintendo Drought Turns Into Nintendo Flood — Where The Rising Tide Of January Wii Titles Came From (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/01/03/nintendo-drought-turns-to-nintendo-flood-where-the-rising-tide-of-january-wii-titles-came-from/). One interesting point raised in the article that everyone overlooks is why retailers order these shovelware titles in the first place. After all, Nintendo might've approved the games, but nobody is forcing Gamestop or Toys 'R Us to carry them...

Unlike the others, this *almost* seems to hit the "so bad it's good" level. And unlike those, I think I might actually pick this up when it hits super-clearance (like $3 or so). It will happen I'm sure... It's got to be worth a half hour of play or so ;).

Yeah, that MTV article someone posted mentioned that many of these cheap Wii games actually come from a small developer in England that was making them just for there (they made Ninjabread Man) until a "savior" came along and offered U.S. release ;).

I vote Mario Party 8's single player mode where you attempt to unlock the extra map and characters, only to find your ass stuffed with Mario Party dildos and improbability making you wonder how a video game could be so cruel.
At one point I turned to my friend and told him I was mailing the fucking game back to Wendy's along with a bomb. I'm sure Wendy's had no clue though, regardless I wish they'd sent me Super Paper Mario.

It's as if third parties are competing to see how can make the worst piece of crap that can still be called a 'game'. I'm getting sick of this... and I don't understand why they keep making these games unless they're actually selling.

From what I hear, they don't -- most retailers only place one order for a small number of copies, and when they eventually get sold (through the clearance bins), they don't bother to order any more. The only reason for the current shovelware flood on the Wii is apparently because retailers were desperate for more titles to put on their shelves.
According to the sales numbers, though, the shovelware doesn't sell (as it shouldn't). I see it as no different than the shovelware knock-off DVD cartoons you find in the supermarket; AFAIK, the availability of Pochahontas and Snow White from no-name companies hasn't hurt Disney's sales.

I'm getting sick of this... and I don't understand why they keep making these games unless they're actually selling. Here is my theory, as a CAG you probably play awesome games unless you can get them at the CAG price. From my expierences, most game developers don't care about people like CAG's. They usually care about the other 85% the idiots who will buy anything that has a licensed character in the title or some shovelware because it is cheap. To me it seems the game developers would rather be lazy ass fuckers than take the time to make a real game because they know it will sell (and it cost them a lot less than making a real game) because it has some noticible face on the front cover. I mean hell if you want proof just look at okami, great fucking game, awesome reviews, didn't sell well. Yet 50 Cent Bullproof which is horrible garbage sells over a million copies. Gaming nowadays is run buy the casual dumbasses who will buy anything, and it hurts us badly. Hell after Brawl the only games I am looking forward too that I know is coming out this year is Okami, which is very sad.

That is true for me as well (except there's 3 for the Wii - gotta have Mario Kart too), but I was looking at EGM's previews for the year for all 3 systems and there's not a lot (for me) on any of them. The PS3, in particular, looks very weak and yet I keep hearing on CAG how it is going to kick ass this year. Well, I don't like MGS or Gran Turismo. The only games that look interesting there to me are FF XIII (which is not likely to come out in 2008) and LittleBigPlanet. The 360, likewise, only has a few games that I'm interested in at release. Seriously, it is like 2-3 games per system (at full price - many more at CAG prices of course ;)). Looks like a very weak year (for ME!) compared to 2007.

I saw it at GameStop in a spinner with the other Destineer/Bold shovelware titles labeled "Gamestop exclusive". Like that's something to be proud of...
Though I admit that London Taxi Crazy Taxi rip-off seems interesting. Have to check the feedback on that one. Anyone planning to get it?

Also, if you find these games in stores, compare the back of the boxes. You will be pleasantly surprised.

I don't even understand why these things are getting reviewed. They are for kids, not for adults. Unless they are having kids review these and then putting a number up, it's ridiculous. My kids have a V-Tech Smile system. The games are horrible but they love them. These games aren't made for adults so why would an adult review them. Hell if you are going to review these, stick a younger kid on there to play it and judge the game by how long he stays occupied.
Im not saying these games are necessarily good even for younger children (and Im not specifically talking about the 2 above), but to have adults review these and then expect anything more than a 1/10 is utter stupidity.
Now complaining about them charging to much for these is justifiable.

Wow, I hope those games sell like crap and they go out of business. Seriously.
Kids for young games not getting good reviews? Young kids these days should be given Mega Man or Star Tropics goodness, not shit like this. They deserve harsh reviews. I wish our kids were born into the NES goodness.

At this point, I think the reviews are mainly for those of us who want to see them for a laugh, not for any actual 'review' purpose.
If anything, and one poster mentioned the NES era, that these games are actually a throwback TO that era. I mean, let's not kid ourselves, the NES had a veritable shit-ton of awful, rancid crap. We tend to only remember the really great stuff, though, which is exactly what will happen here.
It is, however, problematic that they're being reviewed, which gives them a MUCH higher profile than they actually have. Or, on a NES/now comparison, just realize that the only reason these games are even talked about is because of the internet, that grand system of tubes designed to carry porn and bitching. The public isn't talking about these games, WE are.
So, in essence, we just have to let the crap come and go, just like it always has, and always will.

Even when I was a kid, and playing NES games, I knew that Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, etc were great and fun games, and Friday the 13th, JAWS, and soo many others were shit.
Just cos something is for kids is no excuse for what this company is doing. Kids deserve good games just as much as adults.
