Now now I'm a hater as much as the next guy but sales after Xmas make sense from a business standpoint. They have to pay an inventory tax on all merchandise they have in stock on January 1. That includes all those Madden '06s and unwanted copies of Kane and Lynch. If they liquidate now, they lose way less than they'd have to pay on the same item if it sits there.

They *could* do the sale before Xmas, but they don't need to really make a gimmicky sale with their numbers soaring and, from what I hear, having a constant line in the store from open to close in most malls this time of year.

Just think of all the grandmas bringing home full price Kane and Lynch (and Madden '06) for their grandkids because their helpful GameStop employee suggested them.

ON TOPIC: Have you guys played the demo for TimeShift? I thought it was horrible personally. The whole "we'll tell you when and how to manipulate time" thing was weak and overall it seemed very mediocre. Just my opinion...

lol thats just how it starts in the demo. in the full version they have an A.I. that automatically picks one for you, but you can override her at any time and pick any of the 3 time altering options at any time.
I've been playing through it atm, and its a ton of fun. i'm loving it.

Like it has been said, the Thanksgiving B2G1 free sale... Also, I think this sale makes a LOT of sense business wise. Aside from the inventory tax, this is also a way to get all those gift cards/store credit wiped out quickly. I may be wrong, but chances are people don't tend to buy used games as Christmas presents. Most likely, they'll buy it new, and if they don't find it, gift card. So then you have everyone with gift cards buying ANYTHING they want. I'm sure the person with the gift card is more likely to buy a used game for himself than receive one.

Also, in for Assassin's Creed on the 3. Which is good because now it frees up my $10 off any PS3 game coupon from BB.

Me too. Sometimes I think people just get it in their head that they should hate something and then no matter what they do it is not good enough. Timeshift is incredibly mediocre from start to finish. I got it from Goozex, finished it in 2 days, and put it back on Goozex again. I'd say maaaaaybe $30 is okay, but probably $20. It's bargain bin fodder for sure in the short run.

Can't wait for B2G1. After picking up Uncharted I've still got $89 credit to spend. Uncharted is definitely sweet, by the way.

BTW I just got back from a fruitless effort to snag some of the rarer/more in demand PS2 RPGs at one of the Gamestops here on the westside of LA.

They had a ton of stuff no more than 2 weeks ago, but ALL of the good stuff is gone, only a couple of games without the original cases. God damn someone picked that store clean, not happy.

How the hell do I find out which are the dump stores in Los Angeles, BTW? I'm looking for the ones where the PS1 and older games get sent. I don't know any employees at any of the Gamestops, so they are less than helpful. Same with figuring out if they're hoarding the good stuff in the back/behind the counter.

For a 1-day sale on the new version (YMMV on it being sealed vs. gutted), I doubt they will bother to adjust the used price. it prob won't because both the coupon and the B2G1 Free deal says cannot be combined with any other offer or discount (with the exception of the EDGE card). Also most of the deals are listed in the computer, and when the employee totals the purchase it does all the discounts for them so unless the computer overrides it and allows both the coupon and deal to stack it doesn't look like a B2G2 free would work.

It's common sense. You are buying two 9.99 games so in order to get the 3rd game free it has to be 9.99 or less. If you have a 54.99 and a 9.99 game, then that 9.99 game would be the free one.

Damn it, I didn't want the noobziez to find this out. But you guys just HAD to spill the beans, didn't ya? Now everyone on slickdeals and fatwallet will know about this and be getting $60 games for free and clean out the selection.

I've already been strategically hiding all the $.99-$3.99 games at my local GS's in anticipation of this (one of them has a hidden cache of about 50 Madden 2001/2002's), but I'm sure now I'm going to be screwed.

I even know of a few Gamestops where the workers treat the GUTTED NEW GAMES as USED for this promo (at least for me), so even with the brand new games that have no used copies, I just walk up with dozens of $.99 copies of Madden 2001/2002 and BAM walk out with all sorts of brand new perfectly mint and complete gutted games. Last time I got 50 Halo 3 Legendaries (complete with cat helmet and everything and minty fresh - these were all just opened to build a Halo 3 Legendary box pyramid) free with every 2 Madden 2001 purchase for $1.98 each, with Edge discount it was $1.79 plus tax. I then turned around and got $2500 store credit on the Legendaries at another store and basically bought the store out.

I also ended up changing the 2001 to a 2007 and the 2002 to a 2008 on the Maddens and sold them in the ghetto as the new editions for "half off" at $30 a piece.

The trick DOES work i do it every time they have the b2g1f sale! I buy all the expensive games this way in multiple trips and then sell them on ebay and keep the ones I want to play..... Yes I admit it...

Last time I used old ps2 sports titles put 2 on the counter and after the clrek got the discs and rang them up i am like OH YEA damn i almost forgot and run and grab the $55 used game I wanted in the first place. they ring it up last OBVIOUSLY and kabooooom less than $4 for 2 worthless games and a top dollar resell game!

The computer does it automatically so there is NOTHING the employee can do it just gives you the total for the 2 crap cheapy games! Most of us long time Cheapassgamers have learned this from previous threads about the b2g1f Gamestop deals. So we just know it from hushed word of mouth and don't talk about it because if everyone started doing it then the loophole will eventually get fixed... But since everyone is talking about it already I figured i'd join in the Christmas spirit and share the secret like many others have began to do. Just please don't abuse it that bad. Just pick up the games you will play and MAYBE a few to resell but dont wipe your store out....

Just got back from a scouting trip to 5, yes 5 freaking Gamestops. only one had a remotely decent selection of used games for the B2G1 free sale/coupons. A couple of the stores were absolute war zones.

And of course, all of the employees/managers I spoke with told me "that's the entire selection right there - what you see out on the shelf is what we have". Yeah, what about the secret stashes in the back/employee hold drawer? And why is it the computer is showing 2 copies of Persona 3 at the store used when neither are on the shelf?

And again of course, not a single employee could point out the LA dump stores where PS1, N64 and older stuff gets sent.

One guy even told me "oh the old stuff gets destroyed. Yeah the district manager was in here a couple weeks ago and destroyed a bunch of old Xbox games"

Yeah, I was in a store a while back where they were pulling games to be destroyed. In addition to sports games, they were pulling $1.99-2.99 games like Crimson Skies and the first Splinter Cell. I asked if I could have a few of the cases from the massive pile on the floor, and the manager claimed that they were being returned to Microsoft for recycling, and that he had to account for all of them. That part I didn't believe, but who knows.

Hey, first post - GS employee here. Don't really have time between working and wrapping presents to read all 8 pages, but here's some clarification of the questions I've seen:

The B2G1 lasts for at least three days, probably five or so - it's been awhile since I saw the email.

It does cover all systems - only thing it doesn't cross with is accessories and DVDs.

The prices for used systems have already gone in effect - they're not limited-time sales. I'm pretty sure GC and Xbox are the only ones that changed in the past week.

The infamous coupon book is easily available at some stores - we've been told to give them out with the purchase of any used system, as well as with any Halo 3 version Xbox 360. They're generally referred to as the "Over $100 in savings" book if you want to try just asking for one - at least in my store, there are plenty of leftovers from the Black Friday sale. It includes some trade-in coupons as well as one that gives you $20 off any used merch purchase of $100 or more.

Most specials don't 'stack' - the promo wizard in our computers automagically gives you the better deal, but not both/all. The usual exception is the GI/Edge card, which gives you 10% off used stuff no matter what.

Most locations sold out of large PS2s during the BF sale, so the trade-in value got upped to $30 for large ones, $35 for slim ones.

As to finding games in 'ghetto' stores... I work in what's referred to as a 'teritary market' store - sortof out there in terms of demographics. You would think our stock would be crap, but Gamestop's proliferation actually means that we'll have a greater chance of having those gems on the shelf for that reason: in order to keep stock even across stores, we're made to shift inventory between stores depending on the need, so the stores where no one's looking are more likely to have those games that the few and far between want. In the past month I've seen on our shelves: Frequency, ICO, Jet Set Radio Future, Disgaea, Katamari Damacy, Rule of Rose, God Hand, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and a few others I can't think of.

As of yesterday, the value of a GC is still $15 standard, which means coupons should work to up it.

All sarcasm aside, no, there is no way to choose which game is free in the B2G1. It's always the lowest-cost game, and no amount of begging, haggling, threatening, or rack-knocking-over will change that.

The auto-promo dealy does make it so you don't need to do two transactions to get the best deal, tho. That is, if you've got six games, of prices $A, $A, $B, $C, $C, $D (with A being the most expensive and D being the least), the promo wizard will group them into threes and take the least expensive off that way, i.e. games at $B and $D would be free. That's to make it easier on everyone.

The used games everyone will have tons of will be: Dead Rising, Bioshock, GRAW and GRAW2, Bully, Motorstorm, and Mario 64 DS.

The 'secret stash/employee hold drawer' is there for a reason. You treat your coworkers better than you would some random person off the street - so do we. Not to say that every store has one, but it's likely. Also, it's locked.

No, I've never been informed of these magical PSX/N64 warehouses in which some people believe. Yes, we do actually destory stuff at the behest of the district managers - it's called Field Destory, and we only do it for really old stuff that has no chance of selling. I doubt N64 games were field destroyed, if only because it's hard to reliably get a hammer through them. Doesn't mean I'm privy to where they're shipped to, however.

All or most of the GBA, GC, and XBox stock of games have been converted to Used in the past few months. If you see New games like this on the shelf, it may just mean the employees haven't had time to change the labels/prices.

P.S. The stores that carry used DVDs recently got a (likely permanent) promo where they are B2G2 free - presumably to lower the stock since so many people like trading in DVDs there. This works for TV seasons and, if I'm not utterly mistaken, used Blu-rays and HDDVDs as well.

The EDGE card is a EB/GS discount card. It takes 10% off all of your used purchases and adds 10% to your trade-ins. You can get it by asking a GS employee for one, but they usually offer it to you at checkout, seeing as how keeping their job may well depend on it.

Alternatively, Game Informer magazine has a postcard insert you can use to get an EDGE card for $2. Here's a thread about it:

You don't need to do it this way as the computer system is semi-smart. It will give you the 39.95 game and 19.95 game for free if you ring them up on the same transaction.

There is a way to kinda mess with the system but it kinda by luck/chance.

If you happen to have a 39.95 (as an example) game that is defective (prior purchase.

Have them do the return and ring up all the games you want as an example the 6 games below (in the same transaction).

After the transaction is over you will get a 39.95 game and a 19.95 game for free.
Why does this work? Well if they ring up your defective return/rebuy (which they are supposed to for paperworks sake) it will count as a RETURN/REBUY which means it will qualify for the B2G1 (2 39.95 and get 1 39.95 free then 1 39.95 1 19.95 and 1 19.95 free). You don't even need the 1.99 game but usually I have something there so the people at Gamestop don't question the free game because I did end up buying 6 games. May sound confusing but of course there are more ways to abuse this (Return/Rebuy more than 1 game at once, More than 6 games, etc.)

And as always Edge Card stacks with everything. If it doesn't make sense well then you shouldn't be trying it as this is YMMV (well only if the GS guy/gal is a bitch and actually cares about what you are doing).

Usually they aren't a problem. Sometimes the stickers are directly on the cover art itself rather than the plastic, but that's rare.

Actually in my area they have been putting those stupid used labels (with barcodes to make it easier for them) on the spine of the game INSIDE the plastic. Kinda annoys the crap outta me when I am removing them but i guess it makes it ALOT easier for them when scanning/doing inventory.

Same here. And some Gamestops near me use cheaper stickers, which makes it impossible to take the sticker off without leaving residue, especially when they put the stickers on the insert. :bomb:

Just got back from a scouting trip to 5, yes 5 freaking Gamestops. only one had a remotely decent selection of used games for the B2G1 free sale/coupons. A couple of the stores were absolute war zones.My closest store has been WIPED OUT since the beginning of Dec. It's not often that I walk out of GS empty handed, but I've been doing it a lot lately.


As to finding games in 'ghetto' stores... I work in what's referred to as a 'teritary market' store - sortof out there in terms of demographics. You would think our stock would be crap, but Gamestop's proliferation actually means that we'll have a greater chance of having those gems on the shelf for that reason: in order to keep stock even across stores, we're made to shift inventory between stores depending on the need, so the stores where no one's looking are more likely to have those games that the few and far between want. In the past month I've seen on our shelves: Frequency, ICO, Jet Set Radio Future, Disgaea, Katamari Damacy, Rule of Rose, God Hand, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and a few others I can't think of.There's a store I frequent across the border in West Virginia that often has a full stock of great titles... Digital Devil Saga 1+2, Fire Emblem GC, Ico, etc etc. Will hit that one in a few days.

You can indeed use the EDGE card with this deal - it works with any purchase of a used game. The 10% coupon, however, is not intended to stack with other deals. You might get lucky though, so bring one along just in case. Not like it takes up a lot of space.

If you have a receipt and they're still sealed they'll take them back no problem. You can get cash back, but I guess they'd give you store credit if you asked.

opened games they'll only take back as an exchange for the same game or a trade-in, which is a small fraction of the "new" price.

Timeshift @ $30 is about the point I'll grab it at, so I think that'll be a nice score. Hopefully, Amazon.com will match the online EB/GS price like they did with the BF items, so I can order it and save tax + shipping, instead of just shipping.

Amazon matched some of the BF pricing that EB/GS had, such as Manhunt 2 (PS2) and NYT Crosswords (DS). I wasn't expecting them to match the pricing this time around, though it's always a nice hope.
